Description

PENCIL POINTER Filed July 2, 1941 INVENTOR EDMUND J. LADA Patented June 30, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PENCIL POINTER Edmund J. Lada, Woodhaven, N. Y.
Appiication July 2, 1941, Serial No. 400,743
12 Claims. (01. 120-89) My invention relates to drawing equipment,-
the points of pencils with which they are draw-.
ing, includes a wooden base provided with a handle and having upon it a pad of sandpaper or emery. This device is easily misplaced and has no means for ready fixing to a board or other supporting surface. The lead dust can scatter over the board or drawing of the draftsman, thereby causing the drawing to become soiled. The usual pad is provided with no means for removing dust from the pencil point which dust soils both the drawing and hands of the draftsman. The usual pointer requires the use of both hands of the draftsman, which in some cases i awkward, particularly when one hand is employed in holding the drawing equipment, such as triangles and the like, in place on the drawing. If the drawing board is in a substantially vertical position or at an angle to the vertical, the pointer cannot be placed upon the surface since it would slide off the board. This of course inconveniences the draftsman.
Hence, it is one of the objects of my invention to provide an improved pencil pointer which can be easily fixed in a horizontal or vertical position on a horizontal or vertical drawing board, thus preventing misplacement and freeing the use of both hands.
It is a further object of my invention to provide means on the pointer for disposing of the dust created by sharpening the pencil and also means for removing the dust from the pencil point.
A further object of my invention is to provide such a device in which the sandpaper or emery" as well as the cleaning pad can be quickly and easily replaced when depleted or worn out.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device which can be easily removed as a unit for easy cleaning, or for removing the pad with the emery or cleaning pad, or both.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind which although secured in position is out ofthe way of the draftsman.
The novel features which I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims, but the invention itself will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front perspective of a pencil pointing device made according to my invention, Figure 2 is a top plan view, Figure 3 is a front elevation, Figure 4 is a section along the line 44 of Figure 3 and Figure 5 is a partial view in perspective of the device mounted on a vertical board,
Referring to the drawing, in Figure 1 the device comprises a base or plate it! having at its opposite ends vertically extending legs [2 and 13 provided with the finger engaging lips l2 and 13. The plate [2, as best shown in Figure 4, i inclined to the rear and provided with a backing plate II for purposes to be described. The backing plate ll extends beyond the legs |2-l3 to provide extensions [5 and I6 for supporting the device in a vertical position in brackets in a manner to be described. The legs l2' and [3 are provided with the lips lT-l8 flared outwardly and parallel to the plate or base 10 to be received within the supporting elements or brackets I9 and 20, which can be secured to the supporting surface in either a horizontal or vertical position as shown in Figures 3 and 5 respectively. As best shown in Figure 1 each bracket is provided with a depressed portion 2| having an outwardly flared lip 22 for receiving and guiding the. lip [8 into the space provided between the portion 2| and the surface to which the bracket is secured. An upwardly turned lip 23 at the rear of the bracket limits movement of the pad holder with respect to the bracket.
The cooperation of the clamp '20 and the extension H5 i shown in Figure 5 when the device is positioned on a vertical board.
The base is provided with a trough l4 which receives the dust from the pencil after being sharpened.
Received and supported upon the plate [0 is a trapezoid shaped base 24 of suitable material, sandpaper pad 25 being suitably attached or cemented to base 24 and a soft cleaning pad 26 for example of felt or the like also being attached to base 24. It will be observed, as best shown in Figure 4, that the unit containing the sandpaper and cleaning pads abuts the plate II to retain the unit in position and to prevent its sliding forward out of the holder. The base lll may be wider at the rear than the front to conform to the trapezoid shaped base 24, to prevent displacement of the sandpaper unit. Base plate ID is slanted to form a reservoir for graphite particles which accumulate after each sharpening, when reservoir is well filled the holder may be removed and contents disposed of. The legs I2 and i3 are provided with pips 29 which extend over and engage the base 24 of the pad frictionally to maintain it in position against the bottom of the holder, the base being flexed to snap it into position under the pips. An aperture 21 is provided in the base for releasing the pad when it is desired to renew the same. It is obviou that the unit with the exception of the clamps can be punched from a single sheet of metal and folded to shape.
It is apparent from the drawing that I have provided a device of the character described, which can be easily fixed to a horizontal or vertical surface, making it always available when desired. Because of the cleaning features and means for capturing the dust, soiling from dust is practically eliminated. Because of the construction of the device the emery and cleaning pad can be easily removed for replacement purposes and the device itself can be removed from its support for cleaning and other reasons. Because of its small size and method of attachment, it can be placed in out of the way positions under the board when the board is used in a horizontal position or at the lower end of the board when the board is used in a vertical or substantially vertical position.
While I have indicated the preferred embodiments of my invention of which I am now aware and. have also indicated only one specific appli cation for which my invention may be employed, it will be apparent that my invention is by no means limited to the exact forms illustrated or the use indicated, but that many variations may be made in the particular structure used and the purpose for which it is employed without departing from the scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
