ATTORNEY- United States Patent BUTTER PLATE AND KNIFE HQLDER Daniel W. Soderblom, Ardmore, Okla.
Application October 16, 1953, Serial No. 386,493
1 Claim. (Cl. 65-65) The present invention relates to a butter plate and knife holder and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally the present invention comprises a clamp adapted to be attached to the rim of a dinner plate or the like and whose upper surface is provided with a series of clips in which a butter plate may be removably mounted and which upper surface of the clamp is provided at its outer edge portion with upwardly extending fingers adapted to receive therein a knife. The device is such that it may be easily attached to or removed from the rim of a conventional dinner plate and it provides a means for securely holding a butter plate so that it becomes unnecessary to hold the same with one hand while removing butter therefrom by means of a knife in the other hand, while at the same time providing a convenient means for holding the butter knife when the same is not in use.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet efiective and eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which may be entirely formed of a single piece of spring metal.
Another object of. the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for attaching the same to a dinner plate or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for removably mounting a knife therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for removably mounting a butter plate therein.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, and
Figure 3 is a plan view thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth comprising a flat upper plate and a flat lower plate 11 centrally and integrally interconnected by a U-shaped spring 12. To the bottom side of the upper plate 10 there is afiixed a buffer 13 while to the upper side of the inner portion of the lower plate there is afiixed a butler 14, the buflers 13 and 14 being formed of a yieldable material such as rubber, cork or the like.
The lower plate 11 is bent rearwardly upon itself, as indicated at 15, and extends outwardly beyond the spring 2,739,465 Patented Mar. 27, 1956 12 to form a handle 16. The upper plate 10 likewise extends outwardly beyond the spring 12 and has formed in its outer edge portion a series of upwardly extending inner fingers 17 and, in staggered relation thereto a series of upwardly extending outer fingers 18.
The forward or inner edge of the plate 10 is provided with a pair of upwardly and inwardly extending clips 19 formed integrally therewith while the rearward edge is likewise provided with a pair of clips 20.
In operation, it will be apparent that a butter plate 21 may be placed atop the upper plate 10 beneath the clips 19 and 20 to securely hold the same in position thereon and that thereafter the inner portions of the plates 10 and 15 and the buffers 13 and 14 attached thereto may be moved apart by pressing upwardly upon the handle 16 and downwardly upon the butter plate 21 whereupon the edge of a dinner plate indicated at 22 may be inserted therebetween and, when pressure is released from the handle 16 and butter plate 21, the device will be securely mounted upon the dinner plate 22 through the action of the spring 12. A butter knife, indicated in dotted lines at 23, may, when not in use, be placed between the fingers 17 and the fingers 18.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a flat upper plate, a flat lower plate, a U-shaped spring centrally and integrally interconnecting said plates adjacent their outer ends, a butter aifixed to the underside of said upper plate adjacent its inner end, a like butter affixed to said lower plate in vertically opposed relation to the firstmentioned buffer, an outwardly extending handle formed integrally with said lower plate, a series of transversely staggered vertical fingers formed integrally with the outer end of said upper plate, a pair of upwardly and outwardly extending clips formed integrally with the inner corner portions of said upper plate, and a pair of upwardly and inwardly extending clips formed integrally with the outer corner portions of said upper plate, said fingers being positioned outwardly of said last-mentioned pair of clips.
