Description
Dec. 23, 1941. T. A. JASKE CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Filed April 16, 1941 Inventor 72-0 ,4. JAsKE,
Attorney Patented Dec. 23, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
object in view of providing a simply constructed,
inexpensive device which may be attached to any ash tray for use in snufiing out cigarettes, or, used on such trays detached therefrom, and which is easily cleaned and adapted to extinguish cigarettes by insertion of the lighted end therein.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail in the succeeding description and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a view in section taken on the line 44 of Figure 2,-
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of a modified form of my invention,
Figure 6 is a similar view of another modified form,
Figure '7 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line I'I of Figure 5, and
Figure 8 is a similar view taken on the line 88 of Figure 6.
Reference being had to the drawing by numerals, in the illustrated embodiment thereof, my improved extinguisher comprises a thimble, or sleeve, I, of any suitable light, strong material having flaring upper and lower ends 2, 3, the latter forming a base flange on the thimble. The thimble preferably tapers slightly intermediate its ends, toward the upper end to provide a slightly restricted throat 4 therein adjacent said upper end of the approximate diameter, internally, of the usual cigarette. The thimble I may be of any desired length and is provided in its upper end with diametrically opposite edge notches 5 therein for centering a cigarette on said end when laid crosswise of the thimble so that the latter may be used as a holder for a burning cigarette if desired.
The thimble I is designed to be stood, base flange lowermost, on any ash tray or like object to receive the lighted end of a cigarette inserted downwardly therein. As will be apparent, the
lack of oxygen in the thimble when closed by the cigarette therein causes the lighted end to be quickly snuffed out.
The described extinguisher may be attached to a tray, such as shown at 6, by means of triangularly arranged studs I provided on the tray to fit against the edge of the lower end 3, or base flange, and provided with heads 8 overlapping said end or flange. A straight edge portion 9 is provided on said end 3, or base flange, whereby said end may be inserted between said studs with the straight portion 9 clear of one stud and then turned in either direction to rotate said end 3, or flange, under the heads 8 of the studs 1 into interlocking engagement therewith. Ob-
viously', when the thimble I is attached to the tray 6, to clean out the same it is merely necessary to rotate the thimble until the straight portion 9 clears the adjacent stud 'I so as 'to break the interlocking engagement of the end 3, or flange, with the studs I, whereupon the thimble I may be lifted up leaving the ashes collected therein on the tray for dumping as desired.
In the modified form of invention shown in Figure 6 a straight thimble I0 is provided with a flat radial flange I I instead of the flaring lower end 3 of the previously described form. Otherwise, the construction is the same.
In the modification shown in Figure 7 a straight thimble I2 is provided with a head I3 around its lower edge instead of the flaring end 3 or the flange II of the previously described forms.
Either of the modified forms of the invention may be used with or without a tray such as tray 6.
As will now be seen, the thimble I of my invention may be used on any tray of commerce as a removable adjunct thereof, or, with a tray especially equipped for attachment of the thimble thereto so that the latter may be sold as a unit for carrying in the pocket and use on any tray which is available, or a tray and thimble may be made as a manufacturing unit for use as such.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufllce to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with an ash tray of a :sleeve-like cigarette extinguisher member adaptv ed to be stood on end on the bottom of the tray to accommodate the lighted end of a cigarette therein and extinguish the same by excluding oxygen therefrom, and coacting devices on said bottom and member, respectively, for locking the member to said bottom under rotation of the member relative to said bottom, said devices comprising a lateral base flange on said member having a straight edge portion, and headed studs on said bottom arranged to admit said flange TED A. J ASKE.
