ai@ my, N W mi@ 3 Patented Nov. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOCK ` Emma Enos, Klamath Falls, Greg. Application March 19, 1941, Serial No. 384,084
(Cl. 'I0-38) 3 Claims.
My invention relates to locks and refers more particularly to tumbler locks or locks utilizing a `multiple of locking pins.
One object of myinvention is to provide a lock that has a plurality of locking pins that are placed in the locking position by means of a key so that when the key is withdrawn from the lock these pins are placed in the locking position and when the key is placed in the lock the pins are out of locking position.
Another object `of my invention is to provide a lock that is operated by a sliding key that does not have to be turned at any time which key has a substantially centrally located jagged slot.
A further object of my invention is to provide a lock that has a multiple of locking pins that can be set into thousands of combinations by changing the coniiguration of the key slot and making the pins that move the locking pins to` suit the conguration of the key.
I attain these results preferably by the means illustratedin the accompanying drawing, illustrating one application of the lock only, wherein like parts are referred to by similar numerals throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the lock showing the locking pins in thepath of the movable body.
Figure 2 is a plan of the lock showing the locking pins out of the path of the mvoable body.
Figure 3 is an'end elevation of Figure 1, taken broken away of the taken on lines 8-3 of The lock is comprised of a body I carrying a fixed cylinder 2 that is provided with a keyway 3 adapted to slidably engage with a flat key 4.
This cylinder 2 has two grooves 5 and 6`that match with the two holes 'I and 8 adapted to slidably carry the legs 9 and I0 of the U shaped slidably movable element II, the leg 9 provided with three holes I2, I3, and I4 and the leg III with four holes I5, I6, I1 and I8 and a latch I9 with a spring 20 and this latchenters into a groove 2|, to prevent the element II from leaving the body I. l i t taken on lines 5-5 of The cylinder 2 is preferably held within the body I by means of two pins 22 and 23, which lock into the groove 24, the pin 22 also serving to hold the plate 25, which forms the upper part of the keyway 3.
Directly below this keyway 3 are four holes 26, 2l, 28 and 29, which carry the slidable locking pins 3B, 3|, 32 and 33, each having a pin 34, 35, 36 and 3l that project through theslots 38, `3l), 4l) and 4I, into the keyway 3 in the path of the key 4, which key has a slot 42, so that when the key is in the opening position, as shown in Figure 2, this key will line up the pins, as shown in Figure 2 forcing them out of the path of the slidv ing element II and when the key is Withdrawn, all of the locking pins will be forced into the path of the movable element II, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
It is obvious that thousands of combinations could be made with this type of lock whichuses no springs for the locking pins at all, and that this locking means could be applied to a single bolt as well as to a U shaped element as shown for the sake of illustrating the principle of its operation.
Having thus described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction or arrangement of parts shown, since it is self evident ,that modications may be made therein, without departing from the spirit of the invention o scope of the claims. l
I claim: l. In a lock, the combination of a body, a centrally arranged fixedv cylinder in said body, a
plurality of transverse holes in said cylinder, a
plurality of locking pins in said holes, a liat keyway on one side of said holes, a plurality of slots connecting said keyway with the said holes, pins in said locking pins passing through the said slots into the said keyway, and means adapted to cause said locking pins to project into and out of the path of a movable body.
2. In a lock, the combination of a body, a centrally arranged fixed cylinder in said body, a flat keyway one side of the centerline and in said cylinder, a plurality of transverse. holes adjacentsaid keyway, a plurality of locking pins in said holes, a plurality of slots communicating with the said holes and the said keyway, a plurality of pins in said locking pins passing through said slots into said keyway, and a key adapted to arrange said locking pins into and out of the path of a movable body.
3. In a lock, the combination of a body, said body centrally holdinga cylinder, an opening adrality of slidable locking pins in said holes, a jacent the periphery of said cylinder slidably plurality of pins in said locking pins, projecting carrying a movable body, a keyway adjacent said into the said keyway, and a key adapted to move periphery in said cylinder, a plurality of transsaid locking pins into and out of the path of verse holes below and adjacent'l said keyway, slots 5 a movable body.
connecting said holes with said keyway, a plu- EMIMA ENOS.
