LATCH.
Application filed November 13, 1924. Serial No. 749,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN H. NIESSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fairoaks, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in latches, of the type wherein a rotatable button or knob is employed for manually retracting the latch bolt and has for its primary object to associate devices in a manner to cause the sliding latch bolt to be moved a maximum distance with a lesser movement by the member that is directly associated with the sliding latch bolt.
Vith the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

The latch is associated with a door or like device 1 and includes a cylindrical latch casing 2 anchored in the opening 3 formed in the door, the latch mechanism being operated by the knob 4 that includes an operating shank 5 that is preferably rectangular in cross-section, the knob shank 5 as illustrated, the forward end of the block 8 having a vertical rectangular opening 10 therein while a cylindrical opening 11 is formed in the block 8 adjacent the rear end thereof. An upstanding ledge 12 is formed on the upper face of the block 9 at the rear end and the forward edge of the leg 12 is curved as at 13. The plate 14 is slidably mounted upon the upper flat face of the block 8 and is provided with a rectangular opening 15 ad acent its forward end that registers with the opening 10 in the block 8.
.The rear end of the plate 1 is centrally cutaway to provide a pair of side legs 16 that have upstanding. lug projections 17 arranged at opposite sides of the circular opening 11 in theblock. knob spindle actuated barrel 18 has one end thereof rotatably supported in the opening 11 and the cam 19 carried by one side of the barrel 18 rests upon the sidelegs 16 of the plate 14, the opposite ends 19 of the cam being positioned for engagement with the lug projections 17 upon the plate 14. A second block 20 substantially of semi-circular formation in end elevation as shown in Fig. 8 has the lower flat face thereof cut away intermediate the opposite ends thereof as at 21 to provide a rear depending leg 22 that is seated on the leg 12 of the block 8 while the forward depending ledge 23 of the block 20 is slightly spaced from the plate 14, the opposed faces of the depending ledges 22and 23 being arched to provide clearance movements for the rotatable barrel 18 and cam 19 carried thereby. The upper face of the block 20 is arched as at 24 and the blocks 9 'and 20 form a substantially cylindrical formation.
The sliding latch bolt 25 shown in detail in Fig. 7 has a cylindrical head 26 and the usual tapering latch point 27, the latch bolt 25 being cutaway to provide a flat lower face that overlies the forward end of the block 8 and plate 14 while the upper face thereof is arched as at 28 to cooperate with the block 8 in providing a cylindrical formation. The latch bolt 25'is provided with a The cylindrical H rectangular opening 29 that registers with the opening 15 in the plate let and the opening 10 in the block 8 and a key 30 of the type illustrated in Fig. 12 is positioned in the registering openings as shown in Fig. 6. A pair of coil springs 31 are interposed .between the rear end of the latch bolt 25 and the bolt 20 and have the ends thereof received in sockets 32 for .ied in the opposed ends of said members. All of these latch devices are assembled in the cylindrical casing 2 of the latch and are retained therein by the pins passing thru openings 3% in the two blocks 8 and 20 and registering openings formed in the latch casing 2.
From the above detail description of the device, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, that when the different parts of the latch mechanism are assembled within the casing 2, the coil springs 31 normally force the latch bolt at its limit of forward movement with the tapered nose 2'? thereof projecting beyond the edge of the door 1, the key 30 forming a loose interlocking connection between the block 9, plate 1% and slid ing latch bolt 25 for limiting the projecting movement of said latch bolt, the springs 31 forwardly projecting the latch bolt until the rear wall of the opening 29 engages the adjacent face of the upper edge of the key 30. The barrel 18 has a rectangular bore 18 thru which the rectangular shank 5 of the knob extends as shown in Fig. 6 and upon rotating the knob at, the barrel 18 is rotated and either of the cam ends 19 engage the lug projections upon the plate 17 to retract said plate and shift the key 30,
the upper end of the key engaging the rear wall of the opening 29 in the sliding latch bolt 25 to retract the latch bolt against the tension of said spring. By the peculiar arrangement of the openings in the block 8 and sliding latch bolt 25, and key 30 extend ing into said openings and also thru the opening 15 in the sliding plate 14, the maximum amount of sliding movement is imparted to the latch bolt 25 upon partially rotating the knob lin either direction.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the'present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a latch of the type described, a casing, a latch bolt slidable therein, a manually operable member slidable with relation to the latch bolt, operative connections between said bolt and member, including the provi .sion of registering openings in the bolt and member and a key positioned in said openings and retained at one end from longitudinally shifting movements.
2. In a latch of the type described, a casing, a latch bolt slidable therein, a manually operable member slidable with relation to the latch bolt, operative connections between said bolt and member, a block mounted against movement in the casing, there being registering openings in the bolt, member and block, a key positioned in said openings and means for shifting the member and bolt.
