SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,041, dated March 30, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARI A. GUMING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Presses, of which the following is a specitication.

The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the hat-presses for which Letters Patent Nos. 167,506 and 178,740 were granted to me September 7, 1875, and June 13, 1876, respectively, so as to make them more satisfactory in use and more effective in' operation.

The invention consists in the combination, with the movable mold or die-holder, of a system of toggle-joints and hinged bars, whereby the said mold will be forced against the dome with a constantly-increasing pressure, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the base of the press, to which are attached the lower ends of two, three, or more rods, 13.

To the upper ends of the rods B is attached the dome 0. Below the dome O is placed the mold D, which serves asa seat for the die that gives form to the hats, and which has lugs E formed upon it to receive and slide upon the rods B. The mold D is made hollow to receive steam or hot air for keeping the die warm while being used.

To the middle part of the bottom of the mold D is hinged the upper end of a connecting-bar, F, the lower end of which is hinged to the inner end ofa lever, G. The lever G is pivoted to one of the rods B or other suitable support, and to its outer end is adjustably attached a weight, H, to balance the mold D and facilitate its movement.

To the bottom of the mold D are hinged the upper ends of two, three, or more bars, I, the lower ends of which are hinged to the upper ends of the bars J. The lower ends of the bars J are hinged to the base A. The bars 1 J thus form toggle-joints for forcing the mold D up against the dome 0.

Two pairs of the bars I J are hinged to the ends of a rod or shaft, K, so that they may always move together.

When more than two pairs of bars I J are used the other pair or pairs are connected with the first pair by connecting-bars L, pivoted to the pivots of the first pair of said bars I J, so that all the bars I J may work together.

To the connecting-bars L, or to the long pivot rod or shaft K, are hinged the lower ends of two bars, M, which are slightly curved, and are pivoted at their other ends to the outer ends of the bars or arms N. The other ends of the arms or bars N are rigidly attached to a rock-shaft, O, which works in hearings in supports formed upon or attached to the base A. One end of the shaft 0 projects, and to it is rigidly attached the end of a lever, I, by means of which the mechanism is operated to raise and lower the mold D.

The press is designed to be supplied with a rubber diaphragm and a water-reservoir, as shown and described in Patents Nos. 167,506 and 178,740, and, if desired, with a hydraulic pump.

With this mechanism a suflicient power will be obtained to force the diaphragm into the hat placed in the form or die andforce it snugly against all parts of the said die. An additional power may be obtained, when desired or necessary, by connecting a hydraulic pump with the Water-space of the dome 0.

Having \h'us described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a hat-press, the combination, with the mold D, of the toggle-joints I J, the hinged bars M N, and the rock-shaft and lever 0 P, substantially as herein shown and described, for forcing the mold D against the dome O with a constantly-increasing pressure, as set forth.
