. Letters Patent No. 70,912, dated November 12, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR PRESSING BONNETS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, SOLOMON SQUIER and HQBACE SQUIER, of Monson, in the county of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Machine for Shaping and Pressing Hoods; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. v l
This invention relates to a machine for shaping and pressing hoods, and consists of a hollowmetal block, ofthe required shape, into which a heater is inserted, or the same may be heated by a gas-jet, -or lamp. This hlock'is hinged upon a stand, midway between two uprights, which work in grooves in the side of the frame,
and are surmountedby a yoke-piece, supported by springs or weight. Ajointed presser is suspended loosely from the centre of the yoke by an adjustable suspension rod, metal lip-plates overlapping the joints. The divisions of the presser are connected by pressure-bars 4to the lpressure-frame, at bottom of the yoke-piece', which, when the machine is operated, press the divisions together over the hood. Heaters are also placed at the shoulder of each wing'pof the presser. The whole-is operated by a lever, attached to a bar, connectingthe bottom ofthe uprights, whioh, drawing down the yoke upon the springs, forces the presser downupon and over the hood, placed upon the block. In-the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front vertical lsectionalong the line a; kc of iig.. 2, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section along the line y y of our improved machine.
Similar letters of'reference indicate like parts.
A A are the stand on which the hollow metal block B is hinged, at b. b is a heater, inserted in the block B. C C are supports, working in grooves in the sides of the frame A, and surmounted by the yoke-piece D, supportedoby the Vspiral or other springs E E; A,'C, D, and Ill-comprising whatwe call the pressure-frame. The divided or jointed presser Ffis hung'on pivots to the .adjustable suspension rod G, which passes through the yoke-piece D, and is held bythe nut g. Lipplates ma, on the inner surface of the wings, overlap the junction lines of the joint-ed presser Ff, preventing a seam upon the hood,.and securingl uniformity of pressure.
Supplementary heaters h h are set on the jointed presser, on the line of the seam joining the crown to the body of thelhood. The pressure-bars L are pivoted to the uprights of the pressure-'frame at ZZ, and to the `iointed presser at Z l. The uprights are united at theirbase by the bar 7:, which is attached at w to the lever of the second order, M, having its fulcrum on. the cross-bar N, pivoted in the standards of the frame at O, or the crossbar may bc fixed at O, and the lever M pivoted on it at N.
To operate the machine, the hollow block is drawn backr upon its hinge, the heater inserted. The block is then raised upon its hinge into place beneath the divided or jointedY pressenFf; the hood is then placed on the block, the supplementary heaters 1 h are placed on the shoulders of the presser, and the power' applied t0 press down the long arm of the lever M, thereby drawing down the yoke-piece D upon its prongs E, carrying with it the jointed presser Ffover the hood. When the presser reaches the stand of the frameA, the power continuing to be applied, draws the yoke down the adjustable suspension rod GLStraighteningin its descent the pressure-hars L, and forcing the divisions of the jointed presser together, the lip-platesm n overlapping their lines ofjunction. 0n the power being withdrawn from the-lever M, the recoil of the springs E forces up the yoke-piece D, carrying with it the presser Ffo the hood. The power, rwhether hand, steam, or of any other kind, may be applied'to press the-yoke-piece D down upon its springs in any other convenient method. By the employment of a slide-hinge atb, different-sized blocks may bensed'at different times to press hood of varying proportions by the same machine, without changing the jointed presser. f-
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. The combination of thejointed presser Ff, pressure-bars L, pressing-frame A C D E, block B, heater t", suspension rod G, lip-plates m n, and supplementary heaters Zz h, as herein described for the purpose specified.
2. The'blook B, when attached to the. frame A, by a slide hinge-,6, so that different-sized lblocks may be used to press hoods of varying proportions, by the same machine, without changing-the jointed presser, as herein set forth.
