Description

R. C; LAWTON.
No. 224,449. I Patented Feb. 10; 1880.
N. PETERS. PHOTO-UTNOGRAPHER, WA$HINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD O. LAWTON, OF WATERBURY, EJONNEOTIOUT.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ,Patent No.- 224,449, dated February 10, 1880.
Application filed January 13, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RIGHAR O. LAWTON, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven I and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Lamps andI do hereby de-' clare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the-letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents aside view, partly in section.
This invention relates to an improvementin lamps, with special reference to the standard endof the standard a socket, G, is formed to receive a piece of cork or any similarly-compressible material,'D, and in or onto this socket a cap, E, is screwed, to bear upon the material D so.as to compress it in the socket. -Vertically through the cap and material is a perforation, corresponding to a rod, a, attached to the lamp-fount, and adapted to be moved up and down through the com pressed material D, which produces sufficient friction on the rod to support the fount at any desirable elevation, and this friction may be increased or diminished by turning the screw-cap E accordingly.
The standard may be constructed so that when the fount is in its lowest position, as in dicated in broken lines, the spindle will be entirely hidden, or the standard may be made in telescopic form, so that at all times the spindle will be hidden. This adjustment holds the lamp in a vertical central line over the spindle, avoiding the one-sided condition of the student-lamp, and
consequent needful weighting of the base, and the construction is cheaper, more convenient, and equallyserviceable and desirable.
The arrangement of the parts may be reversed-that is to say, the socket may be attached to the'fount and the spindle to the base; but the arrangement as described is preferable.
I claim;-
The combination of the fount andbase of a lamp with the Socket 0, compressible material D, and cap E-on one part, and the spindle a on the other part, substantially as described.
RICHARD O. LAWTON.
