Description

D. CHALLINOR.
- Lantern.
Patented July 12, 1 870.
Wham W I that san new one.
DAVID CHALLINOR, OF BIRMINGHAM, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 105,171, dated July 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN iii-ANTIGENS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part' of the same To all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID CHALLINOR. of Birmingham, in thecounty'of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a glass lantern, with a part of the globe broken away. so as to show the reflector inside, and
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the clamping piece and reflector.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
The use of a reflecting-lens, in connection with a wall-light, is well known.
Eflorts have been made to combine a reflector with a glass-globe lan tern, but no arrangement, it is believed, has, up to the date of my invention, been devised for this purpose which was so far free from objections as to be deemed practicable.
By my improvement I combine with the oil-cup of the lantern a reflecting-lens of small size, and so attach it thereto. that it will pass inside the glass globe where it will accomplish the useful object in view and be out of the way.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its cou struction and manner of use.
The glass globe a, metallic top and bottom I) 1), wireguard 0, oilcup (I, 850., are of the usual or any known construction.
The reflector c I make of bright metal, or of silvered glass, or other suitable material, of such size that it will pass into the cavity or hollow of the globe a.
By a peg, f, on its rear side, and a wire, '5', attached thereto, or other suitable support, it is fastened to the oil-cup d, but in such way that the reflector 0 will, when so attached, stand over the oil-cup d, and a little back of the flame of the burner.
I make the wire or wires i long enough to extend down the side of the oil-cup (l, and give a good hearng length.
I make a clamping-piece, 5, long enough and broad enough to cover the lower ends of the support 5, and give a good bearing.
This clamping-piece s has a groove, s, for each wire '0. A short elastic band or strip, it, leads around the oil-cup d, from end to end of the clamping-piece s. This elastic connection is elongated and passed over the cup (I, so as to bring the clamping piece 3 against the side of the cup.
The lower ends of the wire '5 are inserted in the grooves s, between the piece s and the cup 11, and the cup and reflector are then ready for use.
I am aware that a detachable reflector is not new.
\Vhat I claim as myiuvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An elastic connection, at, rigid clamping or holdingpiece s, in combination with a support,.i, reflector e, and oil-cup (I, all arranged for use substantially as set forth. 7
In testimony whereof, I, the said DAVID CHAL- NLINOR, have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID OHALLINOR.
