HAIR CURLER Joseph Coggans and Robert Kelso, Glasgow, Scotland Application December 1, 1937, Serial No. 177,446
4 Claims.
The article of manufacture forming the subject of this invention is a hair curler comprising a relatively rigid tube provided with at least one aperture for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair to be curled, a pair of tongs insertable into and rotatable Within the tube and provided with a head by means of which the tongs are manually rotatable about the axis of the tube, the limbs of the tongs defining a gap adapted to be brought into register with the aperture and to receive the ends of the hair to be curled so that, on rotation of the tongs, hair of which the ends are passed through the gap is coiled around the limbs within the tube, and a flexible arm unitary with and located at the end of the tube remote from the point of entry of the tongs and provided with an eyelet engageable with the head of the tongs so as to hold the tongs in position within the tube and, in addition, to prevent retrograde rotation of the tongs.
Preferably the limbs of the tongs are resilient and yield to compression by the coil of hair as the hair is wound round the tongs.
A hair curler according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a plan view and Fig. 2 an elevation showing the curler tube and the tongs in separated relation. Fig. 3, an elevation showing the curler tube with the tongs introduced thereinto. Fig. 4, a transverse section on the line LIP-a of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5, a plan view of Fig. 3 showing the flexible arm bent against the curler tube with the eyelet on said arm engaged with the head of the tongs.
The hair curler shown comprises a rigid tube 1 provided with at least one aperture 2 for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair 8 (Fig. 4) to be curled. A pair of tongs 3 insertable into and rotatable within the tube I is provided with a head 4 by means of which the tongs are manually rotatable about the axis of the tube. The limbs of the tongs define a gap 5 adapted to be brought into register with the aperture 2 and to receive the ends of the hair to be curled.
On rotation of the tongs 3, hair 8 of which the ends are passed through the gap is coiled around the limbs within the tube I. A flexible arm 6 composed, for example, of rubber and unitary with and located at the end of the tube remote from the point of entry of the tongs 3 is provided with an eyelet I engageable With the head 4 so as to hold the tongs 3 in position within the tube and, in addition, to prevent retrograde rotation of the tongs 3.
The limbs of the tongs 3 are resilient and yield to compression of the coil of hair as the hair is wound round the tongs.
We claim:-
1. A hair curler comprising, in combination, a rigid tube provided with at least one aperture for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair to be curled, a pair of tongs insertable into and rotatable within said tube and provided with a head by means of which said tongs are manually rotatable about the axis of said tube, the limbs of said tongs defining a gap adapted to register with said aperture and to receive the ends of said hair so that, on rotation of said tongs, said hair is coiled around said limbs within said tube, and a flexible arm unitary with and located at the end of said tube remote from the point of entry of said tongs and provided with an eyelet engageable with said head so as to hold said tongs in position within said tube and, in addition, to prevent retrograde rotation of said tongs.
2. A hair curler comprising, in combination, a rigid tube provided with at least one aperture for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair to be cur1ed,- a pair of tongs insertable into and rotatable within said tube and provided with a head by means of which said tongs are manually rotatable about the axis of said tube, the limbs of said tongs defining a gap adapted to register with said aperture and to receive the ends of said hair so that, on rotation of said tongs, said hair is coiled around said limbs within said tube, and a flexible arm unitary with and located at the end of said tube remote from the point of entry of said tongs and provided with an eyelet engageable with said head so as to hold said tongs in position within said tube and, in addition, to prevent retrograde rotation of said tongs, the limbs of said tongs being resilient so as to yield to compression by the coil of said hair as said hair is wound round said tongs.
3. A hair curler comprising a tube having at least one aperture for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair to be curled, and a member having a pair of spaced resilient parts insertible into and rotatable within said tube, said member having a head at one end by means of which it may be rotated about the axis of said tube, the resilient parts of said member defining a gap adapted to register with said aperture and to receive the ends of the hair, so that on rotation of said member the hair coils around and compresses said resilient parts within the tube, and the outer coil of hair is maintained in frictional contact with the inside of the tube by the expansive action of said resilient parts.
4. A hair curler comprising a rigid tube having at least one aperture for permitting passage into the tube of the ends of the hair to be curled, a member having a pair of spaced resilient parts insertible into and rotatable within said tube, said member having a head at one end by means of which it may be rotated about the axis of said tube, the resilient parts of said member defining a gap adapted to register with said aperture and to receive the ends of the hair, so that on rotation of said member the hair coils around and compresses said resilient parts within the tube, and the outer coil of hair is maintained in frictional contact within the inside of the tube by the expansive action of said resilient parts, and means for holding said member in position within the tube and for preventing retrograde rotation thereof.
