UNITED STATES GLENN WALTER, 0F AUBURN, NEW YORK.
HAIR-CURL HOLDER.
Application filed February 20, 1824. Serial No. 694,154.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GLENN VAT/PER, citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curl Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair curl holders and it consists in the novel features herein-- after described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character stated which is of simple and durable form having its features so assembled and related that they will effectually retain the convolutions of a curl of hair in arranged relation with respect to each other whereby the said convolution-s will become set and the curl will retain its permanency for a considerable length of time.
Vv ith this object in view, the curl holder comprises a strip of metal provided with a return bend portion at one end and bent upon itself at a point between its ends to form a loop and with the opposite end portion of the strip forming a tongue having a pointed extremity adapted to engage under the said return bent'portion. The structure also includes a clasp member having an eye through which the pointed end portion of the strip is passed so that the loop engages through the eye of the clasp member, and the said clasp member is provided at its free end with a concavity adapted to engage under the return bend portion of the strip and hold the pointed end portion of the strip approximately parallel with that portion of the strip which is provided with the return bend.
When applied, the ends of the strands of hair are clamped between the pointed end portion of the strip and that portion thereof which is provided with the return bend and the strands of hair are wound upon the said portions of the strip. When the strip ar-- rives at the scalp, during the winding of the strands of hair thereon, the clasp portion is swung down over the convolutions thus made in the strands of hair and the free end portion is caught under the return bend of the strip whereby the curl of hair is confined and the holder is held in posit-ion upon the head.
To remove the holder from the hair, the manipulation above described is reversed.
of metal which is provided at one end with a return bend portion 2, the upper surface of which is downwardly and inwardly inclined toward the intermediate part of the acent portion of the strip 1. At a point between its ends, the strip 1 is bent to form a loop 3 and that end portion of the strip which extend-s from the loop 3 and which is indicated at 4 is provided with a pointed extremity 5 which is adapted to clear the inner end of the return bend portion 2.
The hair curl holder also includes a clasp member 6 having an eye 7 which receives a side portion of the loop 3 and at its free end the clasp member 6 is concaved as at 8 and the said concavity is adapted to receive the inner extremity of the return bend portion 2 when the hair holder is applied and is secured in position upon the curl.
In use, the ends of the strands of hair are clamped between the portions 4 of the strip 1 and that portion thereof which carries the return bend 2. These portions are then r0 tated as an axis and the hair is wound thereon in the form of a curl. When the hair has been completely wound upon the said portions of the strip, the clasp member 6 is swung down and the concavity 8 is engaged under the inner end of the return bend portion 2 whereby the clasp 6 bears against the outer portion of the curl of hair and the curl is held in shape and the holder is held in position upon the hair and the head while the curl is assuming its permanent form.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A hair curl holder comprising a strip of resilient material provided at one end with a return bend and bent upon itself at a point between its ends to form a loop and a portion extending from the loop and provided with a pointed extremity terminating in spaced relation from said return bend, a
clasp member having an eye pivoted upon' said loop, said clasp overlying the pointed end of the stripand being provided at its free end with a concavity adapted to engage under the free end of the return bend.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GLENN WALTER.
