Description
Nov. 15, 1938.
D. F. MURPHY METHOD FOR REMOVING SCALE FROM BOILERS Filed June 8. 1956 awe/whom Patented Nov. 15, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE METHOD FOR REMOVING SCALE FROM BOILERS 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a method of removing scale from boilers, and the like, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and eflicient method whereby steam under pressure from one boiler is fed into an empty cool boiler thereby causing the scale to be removed from the cool boiler.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a simple and efficient method of removing scale from boilers and the like, wherein live steam under pressure from five to eight pounds is fed into an empty cool boiler for approximately twenty-four hours, the condensed steam then being drawn off and the same steps repeated for removing the scale from the interior of the boiler thus treated.
Another object of this invention is the production of efiicient means for feeding live steam into an empty cool boiler for the purpose of removing scale from the boiler thus treated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
The figure in the drawing is a side elevation illustrating the apparatus used for removing scale from boilers, a certain portion of the boiler which is being treated being shown in section.
By referring to the drawing, it will be' seen that A designates the boiler which is being treated, and B designates the pressure boiler. The pressure boiler B is provided with a steam gauge and the boiler which is being treated is provided with a steam gauge H, both of the conventional type. The boiler B is connected to the steam dome 12 of the boiler A by means of a communicating pipe 13 within the length of which is located a valve M of the conventional type to control the supply of steam through the pipe l3 from the boiler B-to the boiler A.
The boiler A is also provided with a drain-off cock l5 of the conventional type.
In carrying, out my novel method employed for removing scale from boilers, steam pressure is raised in the boiler B to a pressure approximately five to eight pounds as indicated upon the gauge It]. This live steam of pressure of approximately five to eight pounds is fed through the pipe l3 after opening the valve M where it enters the boiler A through the dome l2. The boiler A is empty and cool, and the live steam is allowed to run through the pipe l3 into the boiler A for a period of approximately twenty-four hours.
After the expiration of approximately twentyfour hours the valve I4 is closed, cutting off the supply of steam through the pipe IS. The condensed steam in the boiler A is then drained off to again empty the boiler, and after closingthe drain off valve or cook IS the valve I4 is again opened and live steam under pressure of approximately five to eight pounds is again fed through the pipe l3 into the dome l2 into the boiler A for an additional period of approximately twenty-four hours.
If desired, suitable chemicals may also be inserted in the boiler B to assist in softening the scale.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:-
A method of removing scale from boilers comprising the feeding of live steam under pressure of approximately five to eight pounds into an empty and relatively cool boiler for a period of approximately twenty-four hours, then allowing the steam to condense to cause the softening of the scale through the medium of the condensate, then drawing oil the moisture, and then repeating the process.
