Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FREDERICK J. KOOHERT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL CIGARETTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,431, dated March 18, 1879; application file-d January 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. KocHERT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Medical Cigarette, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
It is a well-known fact that the smoke of cubebs, when inhaled and emitted through the nose or swallowed, has abeneficial effect upon the organs of the nose and throat, and cures cold in the head, catarrh, and other nasal diseases, in addition to hoarseness, asthma, and
other throat diseases; but objection has been made to this remedy because the smoke leaves a peculiar dry sensation in the nose or throat, and because it has a disagreeable flavor.
To overcome either or both of these objections I have treated the cubebs with various substances, and attained the desired result by mixing therewith a small quantity of oil of tar, the latter substance having also curative properties of its own, so that by its addition to the cubebs an agreeable and highly efficacious compound is obtained. I adapt this compound to practical use by rolling the same into paper or other material suited to the purpose in suitable quantities, like an ordinary tobacco cigarette.
In carrying out my invention, I prepare or procure the cubebs in a pulverized state, and thoroughly incorporate therewith the oil of tar by mixing or stirring the two together, the
proportion of each being about as follows cubebs, one pound; oil of tar, ten drops.
The compound thus obtained I roll up in small quantities in paper suitably prepared, or other suitable material, to the form of a cigarette, whereby it is adapted to be smoked.
By the oil of tar the efl'ect of the cubebs is increased, and their disagreeable flavor is overcome to a great extent, while it also has the effect of abating or preventing dryness in the nose or throat after smoking, as when cubebs are used alone.
I am aware that tobacco has been treated with cubebs and other medicinal agents to be manufactured into cigars, or otherwise prepared for smoking, and such not being within the scope of my invention I hereby disclaim the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A medical cigarette consisting of cubebs and oil of tar, mixed together in about the proportions, and rolled into paper or other material, all substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of January, 1879.
