Description
B. RICE. Front for Burial Robe.
No. 212,265. Patented Feb. 11,1879.
Witaesses, iiaveator N-PEIERS, FHOTO-LITHQGRAPHER, WASNXNGTON. D C
UNITE TA'IES PATENT OFFIE.
BERNARD RICE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRONTS FOR BURIAL-ROBES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,265, dated February 11, 1879; application filed June 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD RIoE, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fronts forBurial-Robes and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows:
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap and handsome substitute for the ordinary front for burial-robes, which has heretofore been constructed of textile fabrics, cut to the proper shape to form its various parts, folded, and sewed together.
The article thus constructed is, on account of the time, labor, and material expended in its production, necessarily costly as compared to one made at one operation, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings are represented, in Figures 1 and 2, respectively, a front for a mans and a womans burial-robe embodying my invention, and which I construct as follows:
A suitable die being engraved in such manner as to produce the desired lines and effects,
such as quilted lapels a, shirt-front B, vest b,
studs 1), 850., a matrix is formed in the usual way.
The blank to be embossed is prepared as follows for receiving the impression: Should it be desired to construct the front in whole or in part of textile fabric, a preliminary treatment of the same will generally be found necessary in order to cause it to retain the impression of the dies. This is conveniently effected by backing the fabric with paper, or
- coating it on the under side with a suitable size. Should the front, however, be constructed of paper, such treatmentis, of course, unnecessary.
Should it be desired to form the entire front in one piece, the same is first printed in colors appropriate to the various parts, such as brown or black for the quilted lapels and portion A,
and white for the vest and shirt, which may have black studs, &c. Preferably, however, the parts differing in colorare cut from different pieces and pasted together.
The blank being formed as described, it is placed between the dies, the lines of the blank in short, all the characteristics of the front of an ordinary burial-robe may be imparted to the blank at but a trifling cost, and involving but a minimum expenditure of time and labor.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings is illustrated the front for a womans burial-robe, the parts 0 c D d representing the usual robe, trimmings, rufiings, and chemise-front.
As before stated, any suitable material may be used for the device, those portions which are to be white being preferably made of paper, in which case the die is finely etched, in order to cause the stamped material to imitate muslin or linen.
It is evident that the dies may be made to print and emboss at one operation but in all cases the described process is to be preferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a front for burial-robes, constructed of paper, textile fabric, or other suitable material, and having a body portion, A or O, and an embossed portion or portions representing lapels, plaits, ties, ruftling, or other features of ordinary wearing apparel, and colored, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
BERNARD RICE.
