2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvement in lighting fixtures.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved lighting fixture of attractive appearance, free from glare and yet efficient for reading.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved lighting fixture formed of simple elements readily manufactured and readily as sembled to produce an attractive, efiicient con-z struction at minimum cost.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features in the said disclosure which are novel over the prior art.
In the accompanying drawings, in which one way of carrying out the invention is shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a lighting fixture constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view online 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, but showing only the shade unit, including the shade, the shield, and connected parts;
Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the shade; and
Fig. 6 is a bottom perspective view of the shield.
In the description and claims, the various parts are identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application as the prior art will permit.
Referring to the drawings, the lighting fixture ID has an electric socket I! and an e1ectric light bulb l2 inserted in said socket. The bowl I3 is secured at M to the electric socket ll and extends upwardly with an open top I 5. The bowl I3 is preferably translucent.
The light shade it has a frame l'l, preferably of wire, secured thereto and extending downwardly and inwardly, and provided with supporting-portions or feet l3 adapted to rest upon the top 15 of the upwardly-opening bowl [3, with the guide-portions l9 adapted to engage against the inner side of the bowl to properly locate the shade upon the bowl 13. The wires 20 of the frame I! are secured to a metal washer or ring 2i at the center of the frame I1. An opaque shield 22 rests upon the washer 2| and in turn has a finial 23 on the top of the shield 22. A screw 24 extends through the parts 2| and 22 and into the part 23 to secure the parts together.
The shield 22 is preferably of metal and preferably has its inner surface 25 provided with a reflecting surface, such, for example, as white enamel. The shield 22 is preferably spaced somewhat above the top I5 of the bowl [3, thereby providing for circulation of air into and out of the bowl l3. The shield 22 is also located well down below the top 26 of the shade H5. The shield 22, by being opaque and located below the top edge 26 of the shade I 6, results in an attractive soft light without showing any bright spots on the ceiling. Also, the reflecting surface of the under side of the shield 22 greatly increases the efiiciency of the light thrown out through the translucent bowl l3, thus increasing the efficiency of the lamp as a reading lamp and yet providing a maximum of attractive appearance when the lamp is lighted.
By referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the shade [6, frame l1, shield 22, and finial 23 are assembled to form a. shade unit which may be grasped by the finial 23 and lifted off or placed upon the top edge 15 of the bowl !3, as a unit.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than that herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
1. A. lighting fixture comprising: an upwardlyopen translucent bowl adapted to contain a source of light; a frame adapted to rest upon the open top edge of said bowl; a shade open at the top and surrounding and extending above and secured to said frame and surrounding and extending above said bowl; and an opaque shield having a light-reflecting surface on its underface to reflect light downward, and carried by said frame and extending across and located over the top of said bowl and well below the top of said shade.
2. A lighting fixture comprising: an upwardlyopen translucent bowl adapted to contain a source of light; a frame adapted to rest upon the open top edge of said bowl; a shade open at the top and surrounding and extending above and secured to said frame and surrounding and extending above said bowl; an opaque shield having a light-reflecting surface on its underface to reflect light downward, and carried by said frame and extending across and located over the top of said bowl and well below the top of said shade; and a finial extending upward from said shield and connected to said shield and said frame.
RICHARD W. SHOEMAKER.
