18 Claims. (01. 282-29) This invention relates to improvements in combined form and carbon sheet holders of the kind shown and described in my prior U. S. Letters printing machine, such as a teletypewriter, without the possibility of the form sheets and carbon sheets shifting relative to each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a form holder embodying a foldable back strip, each folded area thereof being provided with holding means into which the collated forms and carbon sheets are inserted as a single unit and are firmly held against accidental shifting in order to assure clear and correct carbon copies of the matter typed upon the outer form sheet.
A further object is to provide a form sheet holder in which the collated' form sheets and interleaved carbon sheets may be quickly and easily inserted and removed from the holder.
With these and other objects in view, the invention also resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts the essential features of which are hereinafter fully set forth, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The folded areas of the backing strip III are substantially rectangular in shape. Adhesively secured to one side of the folded areas are U- shaped spacing strips, or members, ll. These spacing members ll extend around only three sides of the folded areas of the backing strip i so that one of the sides of the strip I0 is left free. Adhesively secured to each of the spacing members Ii is a U-shaped guide, or holding member, II. This holding member 12 is composed of a flexible material and has a width greater than the width of the spacing member I I in order that the inner edges of the holding member l2 can extend inwardly over the inner edges of the member ll.
From this description it can be seen that the inner edges of the holding member l2 overlap the inner edges of the spacing member II and are arranged in spaced relation with respect to the backing strip l0 so as to provide channels around three sides of each of the rectangular foldable areas to receive a pack of collated form sheets l3 interleaved with carbon sheets It. The form sheets I3 and carbon sheets it constitute a pack unit which is of a width such as to enable it to slide freely within the channel defined by the overlapping edges of the holding member iii, the pack being inserted through the open side of the holder formed by the holding member ii. The free side edge of the backing strip lii has a notch I therein to facilitate gripping the pack unit when it is desired to withdraw the same from the holder. Although the form sheets -I3 and carbon sheets I4 are shown as separate sheets it is tobe understood that carbonized formv sheets of the foldable type may be inserted, when in a folded condition with the same result.
Adhesively secured to the backing strip l0 and disposed intermediate the legs of each of'the U-shaped holding members l2, and parallel to said legs, are auxiliary guide strips l6 which co-act with one of the leg portions of the holding member l2 to enable an envelope 30 to be inserted beneath the form pack and the backing strip. The last carbon sheet overlies the inserted envelope in order that the address may be typed upon the envelope 30 simultaneously with the typing of the heading upon the uppermost form sheet. This avoids the necessity of separately typing an envelope in which the typed form may be mailed.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention in which the backing strip is indicated by the reference character It), the spacing member by H, and the holding member by I2. These parts are substantially identical with those shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 except that the U-shaped spacing member II and the U-shaped holding member l2 are positioned at right angles to the position shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive.
With this form of the invention, the form and carbon pack unit is inserted lengthwise of the backing strip l0 instead of transversely. For supporting the pack unit in position within the holder provided by the holding member l2, auxiliary guide strips it are adhesively secured transversely on the backing strip l0 near the position where the lower edge of the pack unit rests when it is inserted in the holder for the purpose of preventing the paper from accidentally slipping out of the holder via the open end of the holding member. The backing strip I0 is provided with cut-outs at points between the inner ends of the strips l6 to enable the fingers of an operator to be inserted in order to reach the bottom edges of the pack units when it is desired to withdraw the pack units from the holder.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8 the backing strip is designated by the reference character ll. Holding members iii are attached, as a unit, to the backing strip ll. Each of the holding members l8 comprises a rectangular cardboard frame l9 having a guide strip 20, U-shaped in plan view, secured along three sides of the frame. The entrance to the guide strip is through the open side of the frame litwhich has a notch 2i to permit the fingers of an operator to grasp a combined form and carbon pack unit for withdrawing of the same from the frame IS. The holding members it are adhesively secured to one side of the backing strip I! at spaced distances to enable the folding of the backing strip l'l intermediate the frames IS in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In this form of the invention, the holding members l8 are Secured transversely to the backing strip l1 so that the pack units are inserted from one of the sides of the backing strip II in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2. If desired, the holding members l8 could be located upon the backing strip I! in a manner similar to that shown in Fig, 4.
In Fig. 9 I have illustrated a further modification of my invention in which the backing strip is indicated by the numeral 22, there being a holding, or guide, member 23, U-shaped in plan view, secured to the backing strip 22 to form a holder open at one side of the backing strip 22. Secured to the backing strip 22 and holding, or guide, member 23 by some form of removable fastening elements, such as staples 24, is a plurality of carbon sheets 25, the uppermost of which has its free side edge provided with a reinforcing strip 26, the outer ends of which constitute tabs 21 which extend beyond the opposite side edges of the carbon sheets 25. The carbon sheets 25 are of such a size as to swing in the manner of a leaf within the confines provided by the guiding strip 25. After the form sheets 28 have been inserted between the respective carbon sheets 25, the pro- :lecting tabs 21 of the uppermost carbon sheet are inserted beneath the guiding strip 23 in order to hold the form sheets other than the uppermost sheet (which is placed over'the top carbon sheet) in a relatively fixed position to prevent or minimize accidental shifting of the form sheets when in their inserted position and to facilitate the typing of clear and correct carbon copies.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that I have provided an improved combined form and carbon sheet holder in which the collated form sheets and carbon sheets may be removably associated with a foldable strip in such a manner as to securely hold packs of collated form and carbon sheets in a relatively firm manner during the passing of the strip through a printing machine, such as a teletypewriter. The pack units are inserted into the respective holders provided on the strip in order to make up a strip ready for use. After this strip has passed through the machine,
.the pack units may be removed and the strip refilled with packs of collated form and carbon sheets and used over and over again in the same manner. The backing strip is made of a flexible material which permits the tearing of any of the holder units on the strip on the fold line therebetween should it be desired to so mutilate the strip, after which the parts may be joined by a flexible adhesive strip, or in any other suitable manner. While certain parts of the device have been described as being secured together by adhesive, it is to be understood that other fastening means may be provided, such as by stitching or stapling if desired.
Although I have shown anddescribed several modifications of my invention, I wish it to be understood that other changes in construction may be resorted to, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention. Consequently, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact structural details herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention which is to be limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for holding paper, said device including a backing piece, a separate holding member U-shaped in plan view, and means for securing said holding member to the backing piec for receiving and holding paper.
2. A device for holding a plurality of packs of collated form and carbon sheets, said device including a backing piece, a plurality of separate holding members U-shaped in plan view, and means for securing each holding member to the backing piece at spaced intervals for receiving and holding packs of collated form and carbon sheets.
3. A holder forpacks of collated form sheets interleaved with carbon sheets, said holder comprising a foldable strip having a plurality of sections, a plurality of guide members U-shaped in plan view, and means for securing a separate guide member to each section of said foldable strip for slidably receiving and supporting packs of collated form sheets interleaved with carbon sheets.
4. A device for holding paper, said device including a backing piece, a holding member U- shaped in plan view, means for securing said holding member to the backing piece, a spacing member, and means for securing said spacing member between the holding member and the backing piece for providing a space for holding paper.
5. A holder for sheets of paper, said holder comprising a rectangular backing strip of larger area than the individual sheets of paper, a separate spacing member Li-shaped in plan view, means for securing said spacing member to the backing strip, a separate holding member U- shaped in plan view and means for securing the holding member to the spacing member for forming a pocket for receiving and holding stationery.
6. A holder for paper, said holdercomprising a rectangular backing strip of larger area than the paper, a spacing member U-shaped in plan view, means for securing the spacing member to only one surface of the backing strip, a separate holding member U-shaped in plan view and superimposed upon the spacing member, and means for securing the holding member to the spacing member with both the spacing member and the holding member having their open ends along the same edge of the backing strip for allowing paper to be slid between the holding member and the backing strip.
7. In a holder for a pack of form and carbon sheets, a backing strip, a spacing member, means for securing said spacing member to the backing strip, a guide member Ul-shapedin plan view, and

A device for holding paper; said device-"including a backing strip, a spacing member U- shaped in plan view, means for securing said spacing member to the backing strip, a holding member U-shaped in plan view and superimposed upon the spacing member, means for securing the holding member to the spacing member with both the spacing member and the holding member having their open ends along the same edge of the backing strip for allowing paper to be slid between the holding member and the backing strip, an auxiliary guide strip, and means for securing said auxiliary guide strip to the backin strip in a position parallel with the arms 01' the U-shaped spacing member and holding member tor slidably receiving an envelope;

A holder for paper, said holder including a backing strip, a holdlngmember -U-shaped in plan view, means for securing the holding member to the backing strip for allowing paper to be passed through the open end of the holding member for being held between the holding member and the backing strip, an instrumentality for preventing the paper from accidentally slipping out oi the holder via the open end or sheets,

12. A holder for paper, said holder comprising a backing strip, a holding "member U-shaped in plan view, means for securing the holding mempaper from accidentally slipping out of the holder via the open end of the holdingmember.
13. A holder for a pack ofiorm and carbon said holder, including a rectangular and means for securing said, guide member to three side edges of the frame for slidably receiving and holding a pack of term and carbon sheets.
14. A holder for a sheet of paper, said holder including a backing strip, a rectangular frame, means 'for securing said frame to the backing strip, a guide member U-shaped in plan view, and means for securing said guide member to the frame for slidably receiving and holding sheets, of paper.
15., A device for holding a plurality of packs of collated form and carbon sheets, said device including a backing strip, a plurality of rectan gular frames, means for it securing each frame to the backing strip at spaced intervals, a plurality of'guide members U-shaped in plan view, and means for securing each guide member to three side edges of a separate frame for slidably receiving and holding packs of collated form and 1 carbon sheets.
