' by the user, and especially the selection by means of a member which is movable to one or the other of a number of indexing marks which indicate what particular compartment will be opened thereby. As a special feature of this invention the member which is so movable also acts to lock the cover in closed position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting for a lipstick in an arrangement of this type, the lipstick being so arranged that upon the opening of the compartment in which it is mounted the holder rises up to a position where the lipstick may readily be grasped and removed therefrom.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description, particularly when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, which are a part thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention in a closed position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device with the cover and one of the sections opened for purposes of illustration.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the device in open position.
Fig. 4 is a cross section substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 with the cover closed.
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the cover open.
Fig. 5a is a. continuation of the left-hand end of Fig. 5.
The device primarily comprises a substantially rectangular casing having a bottom section 2 and a top section, main cover or lid hinged together on a shaft or pivot 5 running along the back wall of the two sections. This hinge may be attached for example by bending projections on the walls of the two sections 2 and t around the shaft 6 as shown, for instance, at 8. On the top or cover are provided a plurality of index 1937, Serial No. 132,815
anus? members It each carrying a name to indicate the purpose of one section of the container. Along the front edge of the top is a groove l2, acting as a guide for an index member i i having downwardly bent portions groove and a pointer l5 engaging in the Hi, this pointer moving along the various index markings.
The device as disclosed in the present application is designed to accommodate powder, rouge, a lipstick and cigarettes, and also to provide a mirror.
However, it will be evident that the invention is applicable to compartments used for other purposes.
As shown in Fig. 2,
the bottom or container portion has at one end a cigarette containing section 98, and at the other end a powder conto be described below.
Each of these sections is adapted to be closed by an individual cover portion hinged on the shaft 6, these portions being numbered 26 for the cigarette section, 28 for the powder section, 30 for the rouge section and 32 for the lipstick section. It will be evident that when any one of these sections swings up with the cover the container closed thereby will be opened and its contents will be available.
The covering sections are normally held in closed position by spring tongues 35 on their front ends which engage with the wall 36 of a groove 38 running along the front of the lower section of the case.
are releasably held in closed position.
In this manner the cover sections Adjabeneath will be opened.
The noses 40 are obviously so located that when the pointer i6 is opposite one of the indices H] corresponding to any particular container the cover section of that container will be raised. In the form of the invention here shown the indices from left to right in Fig. 1 are marked powder, rouge, lock, lipstick, mirror, and cigarettes, respectively.
The powder, rouge, lipstick and cigarette sections then have noses on the cover parts so located as to be engaged by the hook 42 when the pointer is opposite the corresponding index. When the pointer is opposite the mirror index, the hook does not engage any nose, and a mirror 44 is mounted on the inside face of the main cover 4. When the cover is raised with the pointer at this index none of the individual cover sections are lifted and therefore the whole mirror is exposed. Otherwise only a portion of the mirror is visible.
In order to lock the device, a pin 46 is mounted on the wall 36, in a position to be engaged by the hook 42 when the pointer I6 is opposite the lock index. This will obviously then prevent raising of the cover 4 and will lock the device closed.
The lipstick is mounted as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. A rectangular holder 48 open at one end is pivoted near its other end as at 50 in the well or recess 24. A leaf spring 52 mounted on the rear wall 54 of the well 24 engages this casing 48 below its pivot, and thus normally urges the holder 48 to the angular position shown in Fig. 5, in which its free end is exposed. A lipstick holding member 56 is slidable into the holder 48, through the open end thereof, so that when the holder moves to the position shown in Fig. the holding member 56 may be removed and the lipstick used. The cover section 32 normally holds the holder 48 within the well, and the holder rises only when the section 32 is lifted. When the individual cover 32 is restored by the closing of the cover 4 the holder 48 is depressed and the cover section 32 is locked in its closed position by the nose 34.
It is obvious then that by movement of the index member I4 to any one of the individual indices the particular container indicated by that index will be raised, when the main cover is lifted. When the main cover is restored, the parts are returned to their normal position, and are ready for another operation.
While I have described herein one embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself thereby except within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:

A container comprising a body portion having a plurality of compartments therein, a main cover movable with respect to said body portion, a plurality of individual cover portions for said compartments movable with respect to said body portion, a selecting member movably mounted on said container, and means operated by movement of said selecting member for selectively connecting said individual cover portions to said main cover, whereby upon moving said main cover one of said individual cover portions may be moved therewith.
