My invention relates to tops for gas or electric stoves, and more particularly to disappearing tops for same. Reference is made to my col-pending application Serial No. 63,117'flled February 10, 1936, in connection with subject matter shown but not claimed in the instant application.

An important object of my invention isto provide a top of the character mentioned, which, when not in use, may be made to disappear within or behind the body of the stove.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 5 indicates a gas stove mounted on legs 6. The stove comprises conventional gas burners i, disposed between a bottom plate 8 and a grid 9. Valve means for controlling the flow of gas are suggested at l0. 1 A main supply pipe ll connects with a header i2, which in turn is connected .by means of branch pipes ll with the burners. The stove is shown, with an upstanding'back member ll. The features mentioned thus far are or ordinary construction and per se form no part oi my invention. I

It is believed to be clear without further illustration that my stove top may be made to disappear either into the stove or down in the rear of v the stove. To completely cover the top of the stove, I pro- 1 vide a complementary extension 22 of the top. This extensionhas a curved side 23 and a flat side 24, and is hinged to the rim of the stove at 25. When the extension is in the full line position shown in Figure 1, it provides a complement of the top l5, by reason of its curved, finished edge 23. When the extensionis swung to the broken lineposition, shown in Figures 1 and 2, the fiat side is upward, which provides a small shelf which is flush with the upper surface of the. r d 9.

When it is desired to close the top, the above described operation is reversed. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to'the particular form 01' 0011- struction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications which may all within the scope or the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a gas or electric stove provided with burners or heaters. a top in one position disposed over the burners or heaters, the stove providing a space for concealing the top, the top being movable in and out of said space. a vertical guide in said space, a roller carriage movable vertically in said guide, hinge means connecting the top with the carriage, releasable spring means holding the carriagewhen the top is in the space. In a gas or electric stove provided with burners or heaters, a top in one position disposed over the burners or heaters. the stove having a compartment at the rear 0! the burner or heater area, the rear wall oi the compartment being slotted vertically, a carriage movable vertically in the compartment lengthwise oi the slot and connected with the top, a bracket on the carriage projecting thru the slot and a relatively stationary bracket on the stove outside the compartment, and spring means outside the compartment connecting the two brackets.
