in turn, successively apply the narrow stripes and the intermediate stripe .of material to the opposed folds of the covers of the travelling books borne by the-carrien'as previously mentioned.
Mounted on the cap .of the bearing 26 for the shaft 25 is a scraper blade 36 which is arranged in co-operative relation with the periphery of the wheel 20 to regulate the amount of ignition material carried upto the cover by such wheel, and mounted on the trough; 2B in similar relation to the'wheel i9 is another. scraper 31 which regulates the amount of the material carried to the cover by thev latter Wheel. 7 Also mounted on the trough, adjacent the respective paint applying wheels, are two upstanding brackets 38 having bifurcated portions in the legs 39 of which re supported eccentric pins 40. One of the, bearings of each of the bifurcated portions is split, as at lL'to constitute a clamp, and is provided with a screw 42 by proper manipulation of which the pin can be clamped or .released.
"Upon each of the eccentric pins Ml is loosely fitted the perforated rearward end of a forwardly extending arm at, the opposite end of which arm has loose thereon a flanged hold-down wheel which is preferably providedv with ball bearings M. The body '55 of this wheel overhangs the adjacent grooved paint applying Wheel 19 and rolls upon the interposed folded portions of the book covers, while the extended flange 45 of the wheel serves as an end stop for the adjacent travelling covers. The hold-down wheel is resiliently urged down by means of a retracting spring M which is secured to the adjacent bearing 26 and. toan angle bracket 48 which is fastened on the arm Fittedin each arm, adjacent its pin at, is a'vertical set screw 4:9, which is arrangeii to overlie and bear against a suitablyedisposed lug til on the bracket 38. ,On the guide trough 28 are mounted two spaced brackets which support a bar 52 thatv extends longitudinally of and above the carrier and is effective not only to hold the underlying carrier links in contact with the rack gear H, but also slidably tohold down the books while they are passing over the paint wheels l9 and 2t.
It is to be understoodthat the invention is not limited to the particular exemplifying form thereof herein disclosed, as the mechanisms may be modified within the principle of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
ion a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means for applying ignition material to a surface of each folded portion, said means comprising an element constructed and arranged to apply spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and an element I constructed and arranged to apply to said surface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, means for supplying ignition material to said. elements, and means for actuating said elements in timed relation to the carrier.
2. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means for applying ignition material to a surface of each folded portion, said means comprising a wheel constructed and arranged to apply spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and a wheel constructed, and arranged to apply to saidsurface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, means for supplying ignition material to said wheels, and means for rotating said wheels in the same direction and in timed relation to the carrier.
3. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover'porti'ons, of means for applying ignition material to a surface of each folded portion. said means comprising a wheel having spaced peripheral flanges for applying correspondingly spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and a Wheel having a peripheral to such surface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, means for supplying ignition material to said wheels, and means for r p 15 l 1. The combination wtih a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means for applyingignition material to a surface of each folded portion, said means comprising a wheel having spaced peripheral flanges for applying correspondingly spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and a wheel having a peripheral portion for applying to such surface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, resilient pressure means overhanging said wheels to bear upon the folded cover portion, and means for adjusting said pressure means transversely of the wheels.
7. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means for applying ignition material to a surface of each folded portion, said means comprising a wheel having spaced peripheral flanges for applying correspondingly spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and a wheel having a peripheral portion for applying to such surface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, resilient pressure means overhanging said wheels to bear upon the folded cover portion, and means for adjusting the force of said pressure means transversely of the wheels.
8. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means for applying ignition material to a surface of each folded portion, said means comprising a wheel having spaced peripheral flanges for applying correspondingly spaced narrow stripes of material to said surface and a wheel having a peripheral portion for applying to such surface an intermediate stripe merging with the narrow stripes, resilient pressure means overhanging said wheels to bear upon the folded cover portion, means for adjusting the force of said pressure means, and means for adjusting said pressure means transversely of the said wheels.
9. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means, including a wheel, for applying ignition paint to a surface of each folded portion, a hold-down Wheel overhanging said paint-applying wheel and having a periph eral flange constituting an end stop for the books, and means for resiliently supporting said holddown wheel in the path of the folded portions of the books.
10. The combination with a travelling carrier for a succession of match books having end folded cover portions, of means, including a wheel, for applying ignition paint to a surface of each folded portion, a hold-down wheel overhanging said paint-applying wheel and having a peripheral flange constituting an end stop for the books, means for resiliently supporting said hold-down wheel in the path of the folded portions of the books, and means for adjusting said hold-down means transversely of the paint-applying wheel.
