UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
THOMAS S. MITCHELL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
' IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,554. dated August 12, 187.9; application led May 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TnoMAs S. MITCHELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking and other Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a stovehearth embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the construction of stove-liearths'for the purpose of facilitating the removal of the ash-pan and its contents; and consists in forming a stove with a movable hearth-section and movable ash-pit front, the latter extending up to the former, so that when the parts are moved away from the hearth an unobstructed opening is left for the withdrawal of the ash-pan and its contents.
A material objection to stove-hearths as at present constructed is the confined opening through which the ash-pan and its contents must be withdrawn, the same being of such a character as to compel the tilting of the pan When removing it from the pit, whereby ashes are scattered in the ash-pit and on the hearthplate; or if the pan is withdrawn without tilting it, then the overhangin g portions of the hearth will sweep or scrape the ashes from the box into the pit, giving rise to dust and dirt, and necessitating the subsequent clearing of the ash-pit, which is suiiiciently inaccessible to render the operation tedious and troublesome.
The object of the present invention is to so construct the stove-hearth as to avoid the objections specified.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawings, A indicates a stove, and B the hearth thereof. A portion, a, of the hearth over the ash-pit is made sectional or movable, so that it can be turned up or aside, or removed, at will, to exposethe ash-pit b beneath and the front of the ash-pit, at a point corresponding to the movable hearth-section a, is also cut away, as indicated at c, the opening thus formed being closed by a door, C, which extends 11p to the under side of the hearthsection a, so that when the movable parts or doors a G are open the ash-pit is fully exposed.
D indicates an ash-pan, which may be provided with a suitable bail, if desired, said pan being supported on cleats d, so that it can be readily Withdrawn from the ash-pit.
When the ashes are to be removed from the ash-pit, the movable sections or doors a C are opened or removed, and the pan D can then be Withdrawn Without tilting and without obstruction, and, if desired, the ash-pit can be readily cleaned through the unobstructed opening specified. When the pan is replaced and the sections a C are replaced, the section C will reach up to the section ai, which rests upon it, and the ash-pit will be so ei'ectually closed as to prevent any material draft therethrough.
The advantages ot' my devices are the facility they afford for readily and neatly removing the ashes and cleaning the ash-pit.
Having thus described the nature and advantages of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The stove-hearth provided with the movable hearth-section and ash-pit front, the latter extending up to the hearth-section, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS S. MITCHELL, have hereunto set my hand.
THOMAS S. MITCHELL.
