Description

H. HAGERLING.
FLUE CLEANER'FOR STOVES.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 17. I916.
1,284,321 v Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
HENRY HAGERLING, OF IBELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
FLUE-CLEANER FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed March 17, 1916. Serial No. 84,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .HENRY'HAGERLING, a citizen of the UnitedStates of America, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in F lue-Cleaners for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The rimary object of this invention is to prov1de an improved cleaner for the end vertical flues of stoves or ranges.
. Another object is to provide the end vertical fines of a stove with a reciprocably mounted flue cleaner, said cleaner being always located in or adjacent the flues ready for use and forming a part of the stove.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stove, a portion thereof being broken away, parts being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line II--II, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontalsection on the line III-III, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of this improved cleaner.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of the rear portion of a stove, showing another embodiment of this improved cleaner.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 1 designates a stove; 2 the ashpit; and 3 the firepot. Abutting said ashpit and firepot is the usual oven 4. Leading from the firepot 3, and located above the oven 4, is a horizontal flue 5, said flue being in communication at its opposite end with a vertically arranged flue 6. Leading from the vertical flue 6, at the lower end thereof, is a horizontal flue 7 which is located beneath the Oven 4, and is adapted to discharge into the opening 8 which is formed in the back of the stove, said discharge opening leading to the stack 9.
In the form of cooking stoves or ranges now in use, provision has been made for moving the settlings of some of the products of combustion from the lower passageway, or flue, beneath the oven, in which a cleaning tool or scraper is inserted into said lower flue and the settling; are withdrawn.
This invention, therefore, relates to a cleaner which is located in the vertical flue,
and is non-removable therefrom. This improved cleaner is designated by'the numeral 10, said cleaner being reciprocably mounted in the vertical flue 6. The handle 11 thereof extends above'and through the opening 12, which is formed in the top 13 of the stove, said handle having a gripping portion 14 formed on its outer end. This cleaner is preferably constructed of a pair of parallelly arranged, and oppositely disposed, scraping blades 15, each of said blades being secured to the lower end of the handle 11 by a resilient finger 16. These fingers 16 cause the blades 15 to have a tendency to move outwardly from each other when they are pressed toward each other, so that when the blades of the flue leaner are introduced. in the flue 6, said blades will engage theside walls 17 of said flue. l/Vhen this improved cleaner is mounted in positlon, and it becomes necessary to clean the vertical flue 6, the gripping portion 14, which normally rests on top of the stove, is engaged, and the cleaner is elevated upwardly until the upper ends 18 of the fingers 16 engage against the under side of the stove top 13, which abutting of the ends of the fingers against the stove top will limit the upward movement of the cleaner, thereby preventing the cleaner from becoming disengaged from the vertical flue 6. The cleaner is then moved to its lowered position. After the aforesaid operation has been carried out a few times, the soot, which has gathered on the walls of the flue, will have been scraped 03. An improved cleaner of this character, when mounted in a stove, is ever ready for instantaneous use, and forms part of the stove.
Referring to Fig. 5 of the drawings, it is quite often that the rear wall 20 of stoves is provided with bolts or rivets 19, in which case a flue cleaner, as shown in the other figures of the drawings, would not be applicable, as one of the scraping plates 15 wouldengage against the bolts 19, and stop the reciprocation thereof. In order to overcome the obstruction of the bolts, a single scraping plate 23 is secured to the lower end of the handle 22 and mounted in the vertical flue 21, and in the reciprocation thereof, when the plate engages a bolt, the scraping plate is swung ofl and pressed downward, and again engaged against the inside of the rear Wall 20, the upper end of the handle 22 having a hand engaging portion 24 extending through the opening 25 which is formed 1n the top 26 of the stove. I
After one Wall of the flue 21 has been scraped and cleaned, the scraping plate .23.
is then swung over to the opposing wall and reciprocated thereagai'nst, provision for swinging the handle 22 and ,the plate 23 being provided by the opening 25.
What I claim is:
In a stove, a combustion chamber, a horizontal flue leading from said chamber, a vertical flue leading downwardly from said horizontal flue, a flue cleaner reciprocally mounted in said vertical flue, comprising a pair of resiliently opposed scraping edgeswhich are adapted to engage a pan of opposing walls of said vertical flue, a stop formed on said flue cleaner for preventing it from being withdrawn from said vertical flue, and entering into said horizontal flue, and a handle secured to said flue cleaner adapted to extend through the stove top.
