INVENT OR.
'05507 c Vl ////m5 ATTORNEY.
Patented July 18, 1939 UNETED STATES PTENT OFFICE 16 Claims.
My invention relates to a hair dressing and curling tool, and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a tool for first combing, then parting and preparing the hair and then curling the same;
Second, to provide a curling tool of this class by which, curls of varying sizes may be readily made;
Third, to provide a curling tool by which the curl may be readily and tightly wound and quickly and easily released without disturbing the curl that is formed;
Fourth, to provide a curling tool of this class in which one portion which receives the inner side of the curl is shiftable relative to the outer or clamping portion to provide for the ready release of the curl;
Fifth, to provide a curling tool or" this class in which there is resilient means for bringing the tool back to proper curling position after it has been shifted;
Sixth, to provide a tool of this class which may be operated entirely by one hand of the operator for the curling operation;
seventh, to provide a tool of this class by which either pin curls, otherwise known as fiat curls, or bob curls, otherwise known as round curls may be made; and
Eighth, to provide a curling tool of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, eicient in its action, durable, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure l is a side elevational View of my hair dressing and curling tool complete in position ready for preparing and curling hair; Fig. 2 is a bottom edge View at a right angle to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the curling tool portion and showing the inner hair curling member in extended position for releasing the curl; Fig. is a sectional view taken from the line 50 ii of Fig. 2 but showing the curler in extended position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and showing some of the parts and portions in elevation to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken from the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View of one end of the curling tool showing an enlarged inner curling member positioned ready for curling, positioned on the shiftable curling portion; Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of a curling tool in slightly modified form to that of the other Views of the drawing shown in open position; Fig. 8 is a top or plan view of the same shown in closed position; and Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional View taken from the line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several Views of the clrawing in the preferred form.
The comb member l, handle member 2, prong member 3, supporting tube member 4, ferrule member 5, curling tube member 6, curling clamp member l, curling clamp member spring 8, curling clamp member 9, and resilient member lil constitute the principal parts and portions of my hair dressing and curling tool in its preferred form.
The comb member l is a relatively short comb end and provided with an integral handle portion 2 which has blunt irregular teeth za. Extending from the integral handle portion and spaced from the back portion of the comb member l is a prong member 3 which extends forwardly in spaced relation and serves as a prong for parting the hair and at the same time the comb may be turned and the comb teeth used for combing that portion parted out 'from the main portion of the hair. The handle portion 2 is provided with a longitudinal bore 21) in which is tightly mounted the supporting tube member 4. This supporting tube member 4 extends forwardly from the front por-* tion of the handle member 2 some distance as shown best in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawing. It is provided at its lower side with an extended lug da which is provided with a hook end 4b adapted to receive one end of the resilient member in and support the same as shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Secured around the extended end of the handle member 2 is a ferrule member 5 which forms a rigid support for this extended end of the handle member 2, which is tapered at 2c and also forms a reinforcing for the handle member for supporting the member 4. Pivotally mounted on the ferrule member 5 is the curling clamp member 1 by means of a screw pin la. This curling clamp member 'l is a bifurcated member provided with two extending portions lb and lc shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The inner surfaces of these members lb and 10 are Curved and adapted to fit over the inner curling tube member 6 when it is in its closed position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The curling clamp member 1 is provided with a support 'ld which is a bifurcated member `ber l.
secured to the curling clamp member 1 shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In order to keep the clamp member 1 in closed position there is provided a spring member 8 which is secured at one end at Sa to the member 5 and extends against the member 5 and into engagement with the handle member 9 shown best in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. Thus this spring member 8 tends to hold the member 'l against the member 6 at all times but it may be lowered by pressing handle 9. Telescopically and reciprocally mounted on the supporting tube 4 is the curling tube member 5 which is providedwith a pin la in one end which is mounted in a slot 40 in the member 4 and orms a guide for the reciprocating curling member 6 and prevents its turning. This pin Sa also provides a support for one end of the resilient member m. This resilient member O tends to hold the reciprocating tube member 6 inwardly on the member 4. In Fig. 6 of the drawing there is shown a larger curling member Sd, thus providing for a larger diameter curl. This member (id may be snugly fitted to be pressed on the member 6, both of which are hollow cylindrical members, but may be withdrawn when desired.
The operation of the preferred form of construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive of the drawing is as follows:
The hair is first combed by using the comb member i by grasping the handle member 2, which is flat and wide including the teeth za, so that a person can get a firm grip for turning the comb member and the curler member. he 'teeth za may be used for combing to a certain extent. However, these teeth may be done away with and the handle may be nade solid in wide narrow form. Then the hair is parted in any desirable place by means of the prong member 3, after which the handle member is turned and the part parted is combed. Then, the combed portion is 'placed with one end around the member 6 and the clamp member l is permitted to rest against the hair; then., by turning the curling tool by means of the handle 2, the hair is rolled around the curling member 6 including the clamp mem- As soon as the roll is completed the roll is grasped by the thnnb and finger of the left hand with slight pressure, while the curler is simply pulled straight out of the curl with the right hand, the action being that the tubular part of the curler is retained in the roll by the pressure on the r-oil caused by the grip of the left hand until the clamp member is drawn out of the roll. Then by continuing the pull, the tubular member slips out easily without disturbing the finished curl. A bob pin may be pushed in the end of the curler tube straddling the hair and the tube wall before removing the curler, thus holding the curl in place.
In the modified form of construction shown in Figs. "1, 8', and 9 of the drawing, there is provided a supporting member Il, which is a tubular member provided with a slot lia at one side and a slot l lb at its opposite side, and in this member l l is mounted a spring |2. This spring |2 is secured at its one end on` the inward extending end of a loop lever |3 and at its other end it is secured to the end Ma of the curling tube Hi, the spring I2 being a tension spring and tending to hold the members in close relation, as shown best in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawing. The loop lever |3 is provided with a rubber ball l3a on its extended end which is adap'ted to fit in the open end of the member |4 as shown best in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawing when in closed position. Mounted on the loop member |3 are a` pair of clamping members |5 and |6 which are adapted to rest against the member M and when the ball member laa is in position, provides a curler which is left in the hair until the curl is formed around the curler. It will be noted in this case the curler member |4 is shiftable on the suport l l so that it may be shifted in relation with the clamping member so that the hair rolled there-on may be readily removed without disarrangement of the curl, the clamping members |5 and lB being released with the shifting of the member M relatively to the clamp members |5 and s.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions and Certain. modifications thereo f, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, nor to the modifications thereof, but desire to include in the' scope of my invention` the construction, combination, and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
