Description

Jan. 7, 1947. H. J. scoTT 2,413,998
DEP ILAT OR Filed Aug. 18, 1945 'INVENTOR Jforafc'o JERTLSCOZE BY v ' ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 7, 1947 DEPILATOR Horatio John Scott, Mayfair West, Johannesburg, Transvaal, Union of South Africa Application August 18, 1945, Serial No. 611,379
This invention relates to depilators or to instruments used for pulling or plucking hairs from the skin or for such like operations.
The object of the invention is to provide an instrument embodying tweezers for easily gripping and holding the hair to be plucked and at the same time provide a pad to hold the skin surrounding the hair taut and to press the skin away from the hair whilst pulling the hair from the skin during the plucking operation. A further object is to provide such an instrument which can easily be manipulated if desired with one hand. A still further object is to make the sheath surrounding the tweezers of glass, plastic or other transparent material.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. I shows in perspective the complete instrument with the tweezers extended.
Fig. II is a similar view with the tweezers with drawn and Fig. III shows the tweezers separated from its sheath.
The tweezers i are double jawed at 2 while its arms 3, 4 are united at 5 with preferably an outwardly springing bend. The outward spring of the jaws 2 is conveniently due to the spring of the metal at the bend 5.
About the middle of the length of the arms 3, 4 are finger grips ii, I formed by outwardly, and somewhat squarely, bent portions in the length of the arms 3, 4.
These specially shaped tweezers l are provided with a sheath 8 which, as shown is a flattened tubular structure closed at 9 and having its sides cut away to provide slots H], H. The sheath 8 may be made from a cut blank sheet of metal bent and folded over to the form shown. Before the folding operation is complete the tweezers l are inserted between the folded portions of the tube, that is, before they make contact at the join shown at l2. When the sheath is made of glass, plastic or other transparent material the sheath may be made in two halves with the split lengthwise and after the tweezers are in place the two halves may be united in any well known manner. Or again end 9 may be left open temporarily and suitably closed after the tweezers are in place.
It is a collar-like end opposite to 9. It is open to allow the ends 2 of the tweezers to be projected from or withdrawn into the sheath. The tweezers are a loose fit in the sheath and while the jaws 2 may be easily projected from or withdrawn into the end [3 the tweezers cannot normally be removed due to the grips 6, I protruding through the slots 10, II.
3 Claims. (Cl. 128-355) It is stated that the plucking of the hair is not so painful if the skin is held taut about the hair while it is jerked or plucked out.
The instrument described is provided to perform depilatory operations with the least pain. In operation the jaws 2 of the tweezers grip the hair to be removed in the usual manner and close to the skin. The sheath is pressed down over the tweezers by the palm of the hand of the operator, the grip on the hair being maintained by the thumb and first finger pressing the grips 6, l towards one another. The edge [4 of collar l3 makes contact with the skin round the hair while at the same time it is moving down to encircle the ends of the jaws 2 of the tweezers. Pressure is exerted on the tube so that the portion of the skin against which the edge I4 is pressed is held taut and the hair in the centre of such patch of skin is removed by jerking the tweezers into the sheath by upward movement of the grips 6, I in the slots Ill, II while at the same time the skin is pressed away from the gripped hair.
The collar l3 may be made of rubber or other material which will tend to hold the surface of the skin against slipping when it is pressed against the latter. When the sheath is made of transparent material the action of the tweezers is visible during all stages of the operation.
The invention provides a simple tool which is useful in depilatory operations. It is efficient and its use relieves the patient of much pain.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A depilator comprising a sheath, tweezers adapted to slide within the sheath, a collar on the end of the sheath to make contact with the skin around the hair to be removed, slots in the sides of the sheath, and finger grips on the tweezers extending through the slots in the sheath.
2. A depilator comprising a sheath, tweezers adapted to slide within the sheath, a collar of rubber like material on the end of the sheath to make contact with the skin around the hair to be removed, slots in the sides of the sheath, and finger grips on th tweezers extending through the slots in the sheath.
A depilator comprising a sheath of transparent material, tweezers adapted to slide within the sheath, a collar on the end of the sheath to make contact with the skin around the hair to be removed, slots in the sides of the sheath, and finger grips on the tweezers extending through the slots in the sheath.
