Marh i7, E936 E. NORTH Zpl@ COMBINED HANDLE AND LOCK Filed Feb. 2o, 41955 HIS A TTORNEY Patented Mar. 17, 1936 Pettit?? i v.amante coMerNnn nennen ann Loon Edwin North, Rcckfnrd, ill., assigner to Natienal Lock Co., Rockford, Ill., a corp-aratien of illinois Application February 2i), 1935, Serial No. 7,382
6 Claims.
AThis invention relates to certain novel improvements in combined handles and locks and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction oi this character which will be highly eiiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
The present invention constitutes an improvement over that shown in my companion applications Serial No. 7,384 and Serial No. '7,385 led February 20, 1935, for Letters Patent of the United States on a Combined handle and lock.
An object of this present invention resides in the simplicity of structure, that is, a lock mechanism arranged as a part of a handle and consisting of the minimum number of parts thereby not only permitting economical manufacture oi the same, but proper and expeditious operation and durability of the lock mechanism.
The combined handle and lock constituting the subject matter of this application is designed and intended to be used in connection with a door having a movable latch plate or lock bar and another object of the invention is to provide a means for effectively locking the lift mechanism of the latch bar or lock against operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a handle having associated therewith a lock mechanism designed and adapted to control the operation of a latch bar from latched position but which in no wise will interfere with the movement of the latch bar into latching position with respect to keeper plates with which the latch bar is operatively associated.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a part sectional and side elevational View of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational View of the same;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; 50 Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail view similar to that shown in Fig. 3 illustrating the parts of the mechanism, in different relative positions with respect to each other;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary rear elevational View of the invention;
(Cl. 'lll-29) Fig. l is an elevational view of the same taken substantially on line l-ll of Fig. 5; and
Fig. 8 is an elevational view similar to that shown in Fig. 'l but showing the parts of the mechanism in different relative positions with respect to each other.
Construction Referring now particularly to the drawing, a handle is indicated at ifi. This handle may vary in design and includes an enlarged portion l! hollow in construction, providing a housing or enclosure for the lock mechanism and lift to be hereinafter referred to.
The ends of the handle i@ terminate in extensions or ears i2 perforated as at I3 for the passage oi the shanks of connecting elements ld which eectuate connection between a door (not shown) and the handle.
The housing provided by the enlarged portion I l includes a closure plate i5 having an elongated slot li formed therein and secured to the key barrel il arranged within the housing through the medium of suitable screw elements i8.
Arranged in this barrel il is a cylinder IS having its key slotted end Eil positioned in the opening 2l formed in the enlarged portion il of the handle lll as best shown in Fig. 2.
This cylinder i9 has mounted therein a plurality of tumbler pins 22 which are adapted under normal conditions to have their corresponding ends disposed in arestraining groove 2d to prevent rotation of the cylinder i9, the cylinder I9 being permitted to rotate only by the action of a key 23 properly codiied to retract the tumbler pins 22 from projection in the restraining groove 26 against the action ci spring means indicated at 25.
This cylinder is provided with a substantially square boss 2@ on which there is mounted a disc 2l.- On this disc El there is mounted a laterally extending pin 28.
The barrel l'l provides an enlarged flange portion 29 disposed adjacent the plate i5 and this flanged portion is milled to provide a guide groove 3i).
Operatively working in this guide groove 30 is a lift 3i, the lift being disposed adjacent to and parallel with the inner face of the plate l5. This lift is provided at its lower end portion with a laterally turned lip 32 adapted to be engaged by the index finger of the hand oi an operator grasping the handle l@ to facilitate moving the lift and to open the door with which the handle is associated.
A cooperating groove for the lift is provided by the enlarged portion I of the handle as at 33.
The lift 3| adjacent the lower end portion thereof carries a laterally extending pin 34 adapted for projection into an opening 35 of the latch plate or bar 36 of a door.
The upper end portion of the lift 3| is provided with a cut-out portion 3l to provide a curved shoulder 38 against which the pin 28 is adapted to operatively engage when functioning to act as` a. stop to prevent the elevation of the lip by the pressure of the index finger of the hand of the operator against the lip 32.
The upper end of the lift, by reason of the cutout portion hereinreferred to, is of such shape as to permit the lift to drop to its lowermost position with the movement of the latch bar or plate 36 into latched position with respect to keeper plates (not shown) with which it is operatively associated.
This arrangement is such that when the door with which my combined handle and lock is associated is closed, the lock mechanism, assembled as a unit with the handle in no wise interferes with the latching of the door in closed position by the action of the latch plate or bar 35.
Operation In operation a key properly codified with respect to the tumbler pins when inserted in the key cylinder, will retract the tumbler pins from engagement in the restraining groove 24 to permit rotation of the cylinder and consequently rotation of the disc 21 whereby to rotate this disc 21 to dispose the pin 28 thereof from locked relation with respect to the shoulder 38.
When the pin 28 is thus disposed from the shoulder 38, the lift 3| may be moved upwardly by bearing the index finger of the hand against the lip 32 during grasping of the handle l0 by the hand of the operator.
This upward movement of the lift 3| will impart upward movement to the latch bar or plate 36 through the medium of the pin 34 which moves with the lift 3| thereby raising or otherwise moving, as the case may be, the latch plate or bar from latched position with respect to keeper plates with which it is operatively associated and thereby permitting opening of the door to which the handle l is operatively connected.
When the door is moved into closed position, the latch plate or bar 36 is capable of movement into latching position with respect to its keeper plates without interference by the pin 38.
This arrangement, as stated, permits the latch bar or plate 35 together with the 1ift3| to return to their normal position without any operative inducement through the medium of the lock mechanism.
It is apparent from the description herein set forth that my improved combined handle and lock is simple in structure thereby assuring economical manufacture; that Vit comprises relatively few parts thereby assuring eihcient operation for its intended purpose.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined handle and lock comprising in combination a handle having a hollow portion, lock mechanism confined in said portion, a lift slidably supported by said handle and including a stop shoulder, a pin operably associated with the lock mechanism for rotation into the path of movement of said stop shoulder for locking said lift against movement relative to said handle.
2. A combined handle and lock comprising a, handle having a hollow portion, lock mechanism confined in said portion, a lift member slidably supported byV said handle, and obstructing means operatively associated with the lock mechanism and movable by the lock mechanism into obstructing position with respect to said lift whereby to lock said lift against movement relative to the handle.
3. In combination, a handle, lock mechanism supported by the handle, a latch lift member slidably supported by the handle and obstructing mea-ns for the lift, said obstructing means including a rotatable disc operatively supported and rotatable by the lock mechanism and a pin carried by the disc in the path of movement of said lift.
4. In combination, a handle, lock mechanism supported by the handle, a, latch lift member slidably supported by the handle including a finger engaging lip disposed contiguous to that portion of the handle to be grasped by the hand of an operator, and obstructing means for the lift, said obstructing means including a rotatable disc operatively supported and rotatable by the lock mechanism and a pin carried by thedisc in the path of movement of said lift.
5. A combined handle and lock comprising in combination a handle having a hollow portion, lock mechanism confined in said portion, a lift slidably supported by said handle and including a stop shoulder and including a finger engaging lip, a pin operably associated with the lock mechanism for rotation into the path of movement of said stop shoulder for locking said lift against movement relative to said handle.
6. In combination, a. handle providing an enclosure, lock mechanism in said handle enclosure including a rotatable obstructing means, a lift slidably supported by the handle and including a finger engaging lip and having an end portion engageable by the said obstructing means.
