The invention relates to door locks and has special reference to swinging door locks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the bolt can be manually thrown to a full locking position or to partially locking position, and in the latter position will permit the automatic latching of a swinging door when swung to closed position, the lock being rendered safe from manipulation so that its bolt can be held fast when in locking position, either partially or fully thrown, or in a retracted unlocking position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein both the lock casing and the keeper for the bolt are so mounted and made secure in place as to prevent the surreptitious detachment, particularly when the door is standing open or the lock is holding the door in a closed positiomthe lock in its make-up being Vof novel construction and adaptable for mounting upon a door for swinging movement either to the right hand side or the left hand side or for the opening of the door by a push or pull and-also susceptible of use on double doors of the swinging type.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein its mechanism is operable through the use of the standard type of keys, as for example, Yale keys, and the key control is had only at the outer side of the door, while the'locking mechanism is operable at the inside of the door by manual lever control.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the bolt is susceptible of being made fast to avoid any possibility of its operation from the outside of the door, whether with the correct key or not, thus assuring safety against false entry to an enclosure.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its purpose, novel in construction, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the in- 'vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 20 inclusive, which are illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the lock constituting the present invention, A designates generally the lock casing and B the keeper, respectively, the former being mounted upon a swinging door next to its locking edge and being secured in place 'by the use of screws l0 and anchoring bolts Il, respectively, the latter being extended only partially through the door and accommodating wedging keys l2 which are received in suitable clearances as provided in the door, so that they are concealed when the door is closed by the bolts Il, these being identical to the boltsV I I, and such keeper is carried by the door frame or by one of double doors for accommodating the locking bolt. The bolt I4 when in partially thrown position will operate to automatically latch with the keeper B, as will be "hereinafter fully described.
Suitably tted in the door for access at the outer side thereof is a rotatable key receiving guide I8 having the key slot I9 which directs a key to the hub 2U of a double acting cam 2|, the hub 20 of the key receiving guide I8 being journaled in a cove-r plate 22 for the casing A. The double acting cam 2| cooperates with a striking lug 23 carried by a manually operable throw lever 24. This throw lever 24 is pivoted,'at 25, in its tting within the casing A and has the finger grip 26 projected exteriorly thereof. The throw' lever 24 is provided with the opening 21 accommodating a striker lug 28 on the bolt I4, so that by hand action upon the lever 24 the bolt I4 can be moved. Also, by a key engaged in the hub 20 of the cam 2l, said bolt I4 can be moved.
Within the casing A is a spring 28 which operates upon the bolt I4 to urge the same to a latching position, the spring being adapted to act directly upon the bolt.
Within the casing A above the guideway for the bolt I4 is a dog or detent 30 pivoted at 3|' and acted upon by a spring 32 for urging it into holding position with respect to the bolt I4. This dog or detent 30 carries a beveled tooth or jaw 33 which is designed to engage in the notches 34 and sockets 35, respectively, these being disposed in opposite edges of the bolt I 4, and the purpose of which is to permit the bolt to be reversed in the lock casing A in conformity with the direction of the swing of the door to the right hand side or to the left hand side. The dog or detent 30 when engaging the sockets 35 holds the bolt in full thrown position and on the engagement of such dog or detent 30 with the notches 34 the bolt is only partially thrown to locking position, but in this position it will automatically latch with the keeper B due to the formation of the notches 34 and the tooth or jaw 33, respectively.
The lever 24 is provided with opposite cam edges 36 coacting with a tongue 31 on the dog or detent 30 so that when the lever 24 is shifted the contact of the cam edge 35 with the tongue 31 lifts the detent or dog from holding position when engaging the bolt I4 with the jaw or tooth 33 fitting the socket 35, the opening 2l in the lever 24 being of a character as to permit the cam action on the dog or detent so that the bolt when in fully thrown position can be retracted for the unlocking of the door or such bolt released from partially retracted position.
Threaded inthe bottom edge of the casing A is a set screw 38, its tapered inner end 39 being engageable with a series of seats 40, these being properly spaced from each other and formed in the lower edge of the bolt I4, and the purpose of this screw is to hold fast the said bolt when in a retracted position, a partially extended position or full stroke locking' position and functions as a safety device to avoid key operation of the lock or the lever operation of the same.
The outer face of the casing A has provided thereon the framed spaces 4I for the marking as per the serial number or other identification indicia of such lock.
In Figures 21 and 22 of the drawings there is shown a. modification of the lock, wherein the lock, including the casing C and keeper D, respectively, is mounted on double doors of the swinging type, or the same may be mounted on a singlerdoor and the frame for the latter, but as an example of mounting the casing C being upon one door and the keeper D upon another of the pair. Arranged within the keeper D is a trigger 42 which is pivoted, at 43, to be nomally disposed in the path of movement of the bolt I4 of the lock and this trigger coacts with an actuator rod 44 fitting a guide 45, which rod also serves as a locking bolt and acts upon a weighted lever 46, pivoted, at 4l, above the door on the frame therefor. The lever 46 carries a locking bolt or latching extension 48 to engage with a keeper 49 of the other door opposite that carrying the keeper so as to lock this other door at its top edge when closed and on the throwing of the bolt I4 to full locking position in the keeper D.
'Ihe keeper D also has extended within the same the actuator member 50, pivoted at 5I, and this member is extended in the path of the bolt I4 when in thrown position and carries a locking bolt or latching extension 52 engageable with a keeper 53 on the said other door, so that the latter will be locked at the lower portion thereof. These bolts 48 and latching extensions 52, respectively, play through guides 54 which are located as shown in Figures 21 and 22 of the drawings.
On the full throw of the bolt I4 it will actuate the trigger 42 and the actuator lever member 50 to throw the locking bolts or latching extensions 48 and 52 so that the doors will not only be locked at the point of the lock casing C but also at the upper and lower portions thereof and in this fashion a triple lock is created. When the bolt I4 is retracted to unlocking position the levers 46 and 50, respectively, by reason of their pivotal mounting the bolts 48 and 52 will be automatically moved to releasing position for the complete unlocking of the door. The lock is susceptible of being latched in two positions, that is to say, the bolt I4 namely a half thrown position or full thrown position and in the latter position it can be released through a cam or a manually shiftable lever. The bolt I4 of the lock coacts with latches capable of fastening a door at points remote from the lock, the latches being released when the bolt is either in half thrown position or completely retracted.
What is claimed is:
In a door lock, a casing, a throw bolt guided in the casing, a spring in the casing to partly inuence the bolt through the casing, a pivotally supported spring influenced locking dog in the casing having a tooth and having a lateral tongue at the free end thereof, said bolt having a socket and a notch which latter presents a vertical inner wall and a wall at an acute angle thereto and is spaced from said socket and either said socket or said notch designed to receive the tooth of the dog therein in accordance with the length of the throw of the bolt, a double armed received through said opening, a key actuated double cam swingably mounted in the casing, a striker lug on the lever engageable by said cam, and adjustable means carried by the casing movable to engage with the bolt when the latter is 5 in any of its positions for locking the bolt from movement.
