3 Claims.
This invention relates to frames for ladies hand bags and more particularly to improvements in means for assembling elements of latching devices used in connection with such frames.
Heretofore, elements of latching devices as used on handbag frames have been connected by means of small rivets, solder or the like, resulting in a somewhat unstable structure incapable of effectively withstanding rough handling or extended use, with the result that after a certain period the solder would break, causing the elements to fall apart.
It is an object of this invention to provide means for stably connecting elements of latching devices for use on handbag frames, which means comprise substantially the striking out of a portion of the metal of one element to form a tab which is bent over the other element to securely hold said elements together.
A further object is the provision of. a method of joining a substantially fiat metal element to a substantially bulky metal element.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof and in which:

Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 frame members I0 for a ladys hand bag, are shown, to which 1934, Serial No. 747,149
are attached supports I I for cooperating latching members I2.
Each of the latching members I2 comprises substantially a block of metal, preferably formed from extruded stock in any desired shape, to which is attached the flat support II, which is provided with tabs I3 adapted to pass through suitable apertures in the frame member ID, after which the tabs I3 are bent over the frame member to securely hold the support II thereto.
The support I I is provided with a narrow head I I which is positioned in a groove I5 in the member I2, the groove I5 being substantially the same width as the head I4 so that the latter fits snugly in the groove. After the head I4 is positioned in the groove I5, small tabs I6 are struck or cut from the side walls of the groove by means of a punch or similar tool, the tabs IB being bent over the head I4 as shown in Fig. 6 to securely hold the head in the groove and substantially permanently connect the support to the member I2.
From the above description it will be seen that the connection between the elements II and I2 is of such a stable and rigid character that the latching device will withstand long and rough 2 usage, much more effectively than would be the case were the elements connected by means of solder or the like as has heretofore been the practise. At the same time, my manner of connecting the elements together is much simpler than a soldering operation as the tabs can be cut from the walls of the groove and bent over the head I4 all in one operation.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show an application of my invention to a modified form of latching device which comprises a supporting element I'I having a pair of hinge members I8 which pass through apertures in the frame member I9. The hinge members receive a spring wire 20 in a manner well known and common in latching devices. A latching member 2I, comprising a substantially solid block of metal, is provided with a groove 22 which receives the supporting element H, the latter being securely attached to the block 2I by striking tabs 23 from the walls of the groove 22, and bending the tabs over the element ll as shown in Fig. 9. By means of this structure I am enabled to readily, conveniently and rigidly connect the members 2I and Il together in a stable and permanent manner, without the use of rivets, solder or the like.
It will be seen that my invention is especially applicable to the joining together of elements where it is impracticable or impossible to use rivets. For example, it would be extremely impracticable to connectthe head M to the solid block of metal l2 by means of rivets, and solder or a similar substance would have to be resorted ,to.
