In Japan March 5, 1932 1 Claim. (Cl. 1Z0-14) This invention relates to a writing instrument adapted to be used as a fountain pen on one hand, and as a double-color mechanical pencil on the other hand.
'I'he object of the invention isl to provide a combined .double-color mechanical pencil and foun' tain pen which is self-contained, comprising a barrel of fountain pen and pencil portion de tachably inserted intoone end of said barrel, said pencil portion being adapted to alternately feed out two leads of different colors by rotating same in either direction.
With the above-mentioned object in view, the device according to this invention comprises a barrel, an ink sac and a pen nib mounted in and to one end of said barrel, and a pencil assembly consisting of a conical head, a guide bar secured to said conical head and adapted to guide two lead-propelling members, a right and left hand screw threaded tube mounted for rotation about said guide bar, and a sleeve enclosing said screw threaded tube, said sleeve and tube being projected outside the'conical head and detachably inserted into the other end of the said barrel.

Referring to the drawings, I is the barrel containing in one half thereof an ink sac 2. A head 3 to which said ink sac 2 is connected is screwed to one end of the barrel and carries a pen nib 4. 5 is a cap, and 6 is a presser lever for actuating the ink sac 2.
In another half of the barrel I is formed a socket 1 for receiving the pencil portion, the upq per end of said socket being enlarged as at 8.
9 is a conical pencil head having a nozzle III screwed thereto. As shown in Figures 3 and 4, this nozzle I0 is provided with a threaded portion II which is slotted at I2 so as to ensure a resilient engagement of said portion II with lthe 5 head 9 thereby preventing the nozzle lllvfrom being loosened or detached. 4I3 is a hollow guide bar approximately 8 shaped in cross section, as shown in Figure 5. This guide bar I3 is provided on opposite sides with longitudinal guide l0 channels and its looped portions constitute a lead magazine. One end of said guide bar I3 is secured to the conical head 9, and the channels on opposite sides thereof serve as guides for lead propelling members I4 which are adapted to slide 16 along said guide channels in the bar I3. As shown in Figure 8, each of the lead propelling members I 4 is provided at its back with an inclined projection I5, and has a ilexible rod I6 secured thereto, said flexible rod comprising a. I0 plurality of metallic wires twisted together. At the other end of said flexible rod I6 is secured a lead clamping tube Il. I 8 is a tube having right and left hand screw threads struck up from the innerside of the tube and of concavo- 25 convex section and rotatably mounted outside of and concentric with the guide bar I3. To the lower end of said tube I8 is secured a'washer I9 formed with ports or openings 22 coincident with the tubular passages in the guide bar I3, con- 30 stituting the lead magazine. A sleeve 20` is mounted outside and concentric with the threadable cover disc 2|, by which the inlet ports 22 to the lead magazine are closed or opened; as shown 35/ in Figures 6 and 7. y The socket l is shown in the form of a tube having its inner end closed, and is simply a lining to the barrel with which it is in tight contact. This lining may obviously be omitted and the tube 20 inserted in the open 40 end of the barrel.
In` Figures 10 and 1l are shown embodiments in which the sleeve 20 is provided on its outer surface a plurality of longitudinal ribs 24 so that a soft sliding movement of the sleeve 20 is en- 45 sured. Also a plurality of longitudinal ribs 25 may be formed on the inner surface of the barrel I as shown in Figure 10. According to this invention, when the device is used as a fountain pen, the cap 5 is removed 50 and ink is lled in the sac 2 by manipulating the presser lever 6 in usual manner. When the device is used as a pencil, the conical head 9 is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise, whereby the two lead propelling members I4 will be alternately I6 driven, so that the desired lone of the two dinerent leads may be propelled at will. Inasmuch as one half of the screw tube I9 extending out of the head 9 is surrounded by the sleeve 20 which is firmly inserted into the socket 1 in the barrel I, the screw tube I8 is relatively rigidly mounted with respect to the barrel I and the guide bar I9 is rotated in unisonwith the propelling member Il with respect to the screw tube I9 during the rotation of the head 9, thus the lead propelling member Il slides along the longitudinal guide slots. The relative rotation of the conical head 9 with respect to the barrel I is mainly eiected at the shoulder 29 and, inasmuch as the screw tube I9- and the sleeve 29 are rmly held in the socket 1 in the barrel I, the rotational movement is adjusted solely by the degree of vfrictional contact at the shoulder 23. Consequently, at said shoulder portion the inner surface of the head 9 and the outer surface of the sleeve which cooperate with each other should be so machined that there will not be any tendency of producing accidental i'ree rotation of the two parts, and on the other hand ensuring a smooth rotation when intentionally operated. Said shoulder 23 is provided'for the purpose of preventing any oilsetting at ythe point o! connection between the head 9 and the barrel I.
Inasmuch as the tube 20 is held tightly in the barrelby close i'rictional contact with the latter,
resisting the rotation or the tube zo, and the' iatter is in similar contact with the threaded tube I 8, said sleeve and tube will not turn with the conical head. They may however be withdrawn :from the barrel lengthwise oi' the latter, the washer I9 being attached to the guide bar, I3, and the latter attached to the conical head 9, and the guide bar and' disc 2| connected together, whereby when lead magazine for replenishing the latter, or withdrawing its contents. The spare leads are prevented from falling out of the magazine by the` pivoted cover 2|.
It will be understood that, owing to the arrangement of the screw tube I8 and the sleeve 20 which protrude from the conical head 9 and are inserted into the socket 1 in the barrel, the rotatable mounting oi' said conical head 9 may be readily eiected, and that such rotation can be made smooth and adjustable. Moreover, owing to said special arrangement, the pencil portion can be readily removed from the barrel I so that the spare lead may be taken out of the magazine by opening cover 2 I.

A double color mechanical pencil comprising a barrel having a socket formed at one end thereof and a pencil assembly consisting of a tapering head rotatable on said barrel, a hollow guide' bar having oppositely arranged channels for the reception and movement'of lead propelling members, and open ended tubular portions constituting lead magazines, said guide bar being attached to said head, a screw threaded tube having right and left handed screw threads intersecting each other, two lead propelling members arranged and adapted to be moved in said channels, and to engage with the threads oi' the screw threaded tube and ride thereon, a sleeve surrounding and closely fitting said screw threaded tube and inserted in the socket of the barrel, a closure for the inner end of the guide bar, having ports coinciding with the open ends o! said magazines, a pivotally arranged cover for the ends of said magazines, at-
