Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Kay 5, 1918. Serial 170. 85,688.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Doo'ron FRANKLIN Qmvnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and, Improved Pencil, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion. a A
e invention relates to pencils having movable leads, and its object isto provide a new and improved pencil arranged to sehold the movable lead in projected position for writing or drawing purposes, and to allow convenient feeding of the lead outwardlyvto project the lead terminal a de-.
sired distance beyond the point of the stock or barrel of the pencil.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a stock or barrel, a head slidable forward and backward on the stock, and
lead-engaging members held in the said stock and "of which one is attached to the stock and the other isattfached to the said head and moves with the same, the said members having inde endent leadengaging means to normall 110 .d the lead against re turn movement, t e member attached to the head imparting a forward feedin movement ,to the lead on moving the head orward.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompan 'ng drawings forminga art of this specification, in
which similar aracters of reference indi-' cate correspondingparts in all the views.
his a perspective view of the pen- Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal central section of the same with the feeding and holdingparts in normal position;
3 isa similar view of the same with the eedingr means in activeposition;
is a perspective view of the head and; t
' other suitable material, is Nann pointed at its forward end-11 an the stock is rovided with a central bore 12 exten i-ng throughout the len h ofthe stock. On the rear or butt end 0 the stock 10 is mounted to slide forward and backward a head 13 provided with len hwise extending slots, 14
e by pins 7 held on the stock to limit the. forwardaand backward sliding movement of the head 13 and to hold the latter against turning on the stock.
In the bore 12 is held loosely a tubular holding member in which is mounted to slide a tubular feeding member 21 containing the lead 22. The rear end of the feeding member 21 is attached to the top 23 of the head 13 so as to move with the latter, and the rear end of the holding member 20 is provided with outwardly extending flanges 24 attached to the rear end of the stock-10 (see Fig. 5). A spring 25 is coiled around the rear end of the feedin member 21 and rests with its inner end on t e flanges 24 and abuts with its outer end against the under side of the top 23 of the head 13 to hold the latter normally in rearmost osition, as plainly shown in Fi 2. The orward end of the holding mem r 20 terminates a distance from the forward end of the stock 10,
asplainly shown in Fi 3 and 4, and the forward end of the feedlng member 21 passes throu h a reduced portion 26 of the bore '12 an is adapted to project slightly beyond the terminal of the stock 10 at the time the feeding member 21 is moved forward on the Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
o erator sliding the head 13 forward, as 1ndicated in Fi 3. l
Both the hiding member 20 and the feed member 21 are split lengthwise and the.
'si e edges of the feeding member 21 are provided with inwardly extending flanges'30 provided at their inner edges with teeth 31 engagin the peripheral face of the lead 22, as plai y shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. The
side edges of the holding member 20 are provided with inwardly extending flanges 33 provided at their inner ed with ratchet teeth 34 engagin the perip eral face of the lead 22 interm iate the ratchet teeth 31. By reference to theflanges 33 and t the split in the feedin member 1 to engage the lead 22 as above both sets of teeth thelead 22 with so cient force to prevent purposes. When the head 13. is push escribed. The ratchet teeth 31 and 34 extend rearwardly so that the peripheral face of 5 it will be noticedth at ei-r teeth 34 ass through forward by the user against the tension of the-spring 25 then the feeding member 21 is moved in the same direction and its ratchet teeth 31 now push the lead 22 forward a distance corresponding to the movement given to the head 18 pressure is released on the head 13 the latter 1 returns to its rearmost position by the action opening in the feeding mem er 21 to allow of filling the said feeding member with a lead 22 or pieces of lead from this end of p the pencil.
The outer end of the head 13 is provided with an external screw thread 50 on which screws :1 cap 51 provided intermediate its ends with a partition 52 to be seated on the top 23 of the head 13 to normally close the opening 40. The outer end of the ca 51 is provided with an eraser 53 of rub r or other suitable material for erasing purposes.
The stock 10 is provided with a number of magazine recesses 60 extending from the rear end of the stock to about the beginning of the point 11, and the said recesses 60 are operator arranged in a circle concentric to the bore 12, as plainly indicated in Fig. 5. Each of the recesses 60 is adapted to contain an extra lead 61 and the top 23 of the cap 13 is provided with openings 62 in alinement with the recesses 60 to permit of placing the leads 61 into the said recesses 60 or removing the same therefrom at-the time the easily to get out of order.
It will alsobe noticed that theilead 22 is gripped practically throughout the length thereof by the teeth 31 and 3 1 to securely. hold the lead against inward movement but to allow eutward feeding movement on the pressing the head 13, as previously ex lained. v
' aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent both having gripping means independently 1. A pencil, comprisin a-stock having a central bore, ahead slida le on the butt end tubular.
of the said stock, and telescopin members extending withinthe sai bore and engaging the le held in the inner member, one of the "members being-secured to the stock vand the other member bein secured to the-said head. to move with t e latter, the said gripping means normally holding the lead againstireturn movement and a1- lowing forward feeding thereof.
When the and described is very 2. A encil, comprisin a stock having a central re, a head sli able forward and backward on the said stock, a tubular feeding member in the said bore and attached to the said head to move with the latter, the said feeding member having'gripping means engaging the lead held in the said feeding member to move the lead forward on impartinga forward sliding movement to the said head, and a second tubular member in the stock and in which the first tubular member slides, said second tubular member having gripping means for holding the lead against return -movement during the return movement-of the feeding member, the feed gripping means assisting the said holding means to hold the lead against return movement during the time the feeding member is in non-feeding inactive position.
3. A pencil, comprising a stock havin a central bore, a spring-pressed head slida le forward and backward on the butt ends of the said stock, a tubular holding member within the said bore and attached to the said stock, the said holding member being split and having its edges terminating in inwardly extendin flanges having ratchet teeth, a tubular eeding member slidable within the said holding member and adapted to contain a lead, the rear end of the said feeding said head, the said feeding member being s lit for the passage ofthe said flanges of t e holding member, the edges of the said gripping member terminating in inwardly extending flanges having ratchet teeth, the
ratchet teeth of both the said holding mem ber and the said feeding member being adapted to engage the lea 4. A encil, comprising a stock havin a' central re, a s ring-pressed head slida le forward and bac ard on the butt end" of the said stock, a tubular holding member within the said bore and attached to the said stock, thegsaid holding member being split, and having its edges terminating in inwardly extendin -.flanges "having ratchet teeth, a tubular ceding member slidable within the said holding member and adapted to contain a lead, the rear end of the said feeding member being attached to-thesaid head,
the said feeding member being split for the vpassage of the said flanges of the holding 1 forward and backward on'the said butt end member being attached to the member being adapted to of the said stock, a tubular holding as. her within the said bore and attached to the said stock, thesaid holding member being splitand having its ed es terminating a ininwardl extending anges having ratchet teet a tubular feeding member slidable within the said holding member and adapted to contain a lead,- the rear end ,of the said feeding member being attached to the said head, the said feeding member being split for the passage of the said being flanges of the holding member, the edges of the said feeding member terminating in inwardly extending flan having ratchet teeth, the ratchet teeth 0 both the said hold- "in member and the said feeding member adapted to engage the lead, the said holding member terminating a distance from the forward end of the stock and the,
