Definitions
- the present invention relates to vaping devices, and specifically to water-resistant vaping devices.
- vaping device Electronic vapor devices, also known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have gained popularity in recent years. Use of these is commonly termed “vaping”.
- the scope of the meaning of the term “vaping device” includes vape pens, e-cigarettes, and portable inhalation devices and systems.
- a vaping device generally consists of a power source such as a battery, a cartridge or container full of liquid that can be heated to produce breathable vapor, a heating element to heat the liquid, and a mouthpiece through which a user can inhale the vapor produced from evaporating the liquid in the cartridge.
- Most vaping devices are compatible with a variety of liquids and cartridges, allowing a user to select a preferred inhalant, such as flavored vapor or a drug such as nicotine.
- vaping becomes increasingly popular and pervasive, it's natural for people to want to carry and use their e-cigarettes in more situations and to want accessories that enable them to do so, such as carrying cases, power adapters, or table stands. For instance, someone might want to use their vaping device in a pool or hot tub, or bring it along for a day at the beach; one might easily imagine doing this with a regular cigarette, after all. However, anyone who's ever carried a cell phone or similar would understand why bringing a gadget such as an e-cigarette into such a setting without taking measures to protect the device from potentially getting wet, is probably a bad idea.
- vaping device expels steam at least through the mouthpiece
- simply sealing the device in a plastic bag or similar would provide protection, but prevent the device from being usable while protected; the challenge for enabling use of a vaping device in or near water is to protect against external moisture while also not trapping vapor inside the device or preventing use of the device while the protector is in place.
- a device comprising a vape pen with a base end and a vapor release end; a sleeve for sealing out water or liquid that is detachably coupled with the vape pen and extending from the base end to the vapor release end, with an open end positioned proximate to the vape pen base end; and a sealing cap, which fits with the open base end of the sleeve to form a hermetic, water-proof seal at the base end of the vape pen.
- a user of a vape pen or other vape device inserts their vape pen or device into the sleeve and closes the cap, to at least partially protect the vaping device from liquid.
- the user wishes to inhale vapor from the device, the user uncouples the cap and inhales through an aperture at the vapor release end of the sleeve proximate to the mouthpiece of the vape pen, then recouples the cap for increased liquid-proofing. It should be noted that if the cap end is entirely sealed and no air can flow through the device when inhaled from, the air pressure inside the sleeve and device can create at least a partial vacuum suction effect, thus inhibiting the vapor inhalation.
- a non-airtight cap such as one including small apertures or mesh, might permit an increased level of air flow at the expense of accepting a decreased level of waterproofing (i.e. mostly splash-resistant, but not very safe to drop or hold underwater).
- the opening and closing could be automated, such that when the user inhales and the air pressure drops, a device opens one or more apertures to allow air flow.
- a manual embodiment also has the virtue of simplicity; the user can manually open the cap, inhale some vapor, close the cap again, and set the device aside, and is always aware of how ‘splash-safe’ their device is currently.
- this feature might vary.
- the aperture is in the form of a slit, such that the aperture remains in a mostly closed state (and thus mostly water-resistant) unless and until force is applied.
- aperture for allowing access to the vapor coming out of the mouthpiece of the vaping device might include other means for accessing or sealing an aperture known in the art, such as maybe a cap that manually opens and closes.
- the slit design is considered to be the preferred implementation.
- the sealing cap is inserted at least partially within the sleeve when the sealing cap is attached to the sleeve open end.
- the invention may include a coupling strip, the coupling strip having a cap end coupled with the sealing cap and a sleeve end coupled with the sleeve.
- the sleeve, the sealing cap and the coupling strip form a unitary body.
- the sleeve comprises elastic material.
- the sealing cap comprises elastic material.
- the vape pen shape may include a bulge or protruding feature, and the sleeve is shaped to fit also around this feature.
- the vape pen further comprises a mouthpiece extending from the vape pen vapor releasing end extends beyond the vape pen vapor and to a portion of the mouthpiece to form a water proof seal between the mouthpiece and the sleeve elongate body.
- Another preferred embodiment of the invented device may be a device adapted for housing of an elongate-shaped vape pen that consists of a water sealing sleeve detachably coupled with the vape pen and extending from the base end to the vapor release end, with an open end positioned proximate to the vape pen base end; and a sealing cap, the sealing cap for detachable attachment to the sleeve open end to form a hermetic, water-proof seal.
- some preferred embodiments may include a one-way valve at the mouthpiece of the vaping device, either as part of the device, a separate piece, or part of the sleeve. This feature may assist in minimizing the amount of vapor released into the sleeve instead of inhaled by a user.
- the one-way valve might be shaped and positioned such that a user can apply pressure, such as by biting down gently, to the top end of the sleeve (and the one-way valve inside) in order to open the valve and allow the user to inhale vapor.
- the sleeve may include features to prevent the vape device from shifting within or falling out of the sleeve.
- the sleeve may be made of elastic silicone rubber or similar, and undersized (such as in a range of from less than 0.001 mm to about 3 mm) to snugly fit the vape device such that the sleeve-equipped device would be held in place and inhibited from slipping by friction and pressure between vape device casing and sleeve, but the elastic sleeve could be pulled, bended, or ‘peeled away’ by a user when intentionally placing or removing the sleeve.
- a sleeve might be fashioned to fit a vaping device that is not an elongate shape, and different sleeves might be produced to accommodate different models of vaping device having different shapes, sizes, and features.
- a sleeve might have additional features to accommodate use of features of the vaping device while the sleeve is in place, such as features for allowing better access to buttons or controls on the vaping device.
- Different variations of the invention might be adapted to offer different degrees of waterproofing, ranging from gold-standard comprehensive waterproofing suited for taking the device along on a scuba dive, down to just some added peace of mind on a day at the beach.
- the sleeve might include a clip or loop to fasten onto something, or elements that make the outside of the sleeve easier or more comfortable to grip.
- the sleeve might be decorated with patterns or designs, and be available in a range of different colors, and of course the vaping device could be also.
- the sleeve could include more openings, with or without coverings, such as to allow access to buttons or charging ports or uncover venting or cooling apertures on the vaping device, particularly in embodiments that are water-resistant instead of watertight.
- the vaping device might be fashioned of any suitable materials known in the art for building a vaping device.
- the vaping device at least includes also a power source and a heating element, requiring electrical conduction and heat conduction; these components might be made of various metals or similar appropriate materials as known in the art.
- the sleeve and cap might be fashioned of any suitable material known in the art for producing a shaped, water-resistant protective layer, including but not limited to plastic, rubber, or silicone. BPA-free silicone rubber is highly preferred as the material out of which to make the sleeve, and overall, an elastic material such as BPA-free silicone rubber or similar is preferred. All manufacturing materials mentioned in this disclosure should be viewed as non-limiting examples only; the elements of the invented device might be constructed of any materials found to be suitable for producing the claimed functionality, including materials that have yet to be invented.
- vaping devices are generally made to be of a size appropriate to be used by adult-sized human beings, though this is a matter of utility rather than an inherent limit on the size or scale a working device could be built to be.
- a sleeve as disclosed herein might be fashioned to suit any potential size, scale, or shape of vaping device, and isn't limited with regard to size, scale, or shape except as stated in the claims.

- FIG. 9 is a further additional view of the 3D model of FIGS. 2A-2E , presenting further detail regarding certain preferred measurements and dimensions.
- FIG. 1A is a cutaway front view line drawing of the invented device 100 , comprising a vape pen 102 and a sleeve 104 .
- the vape pen 102 further comprises at least a pen top end 106 , a pen base end 108 , a mouthpiece 110 , a casing 111 , and a control 112 .
- the vape pen 102 is a device used for inhaling vapor, or “vaping”; this kind of device is also known as an e-cigarette, electronic cigarette, or portable inhalation system, and produces vapor for a user to inhale.
- the vape pen 102 is an ordinary vaping device as known in the art, and has other internal components as already known in the art that are not shown in this drawing, such as at least a power source, a vaping liquid cartridge, and a heating element.
- the vape pen 102 as presented in these Figures should be viewed as encompassing the internal components found in vaping devices as generally known in the art, and accordingly, perceived also as an electronic device that could easily be damaged if exposed to liquid.
- the invention pertains generally to the outside of the vape pen 102 , so no further discussion of the internal components of the vape pen 102 is necessary here.
- the sleeve 104 further comprises at least a cap 114 , a sleeve top end 116 , a sleeve base end 118 , a top aperture 120 , and a sleeve elongate body 122 .
- the sleeve 104 fully surrounds the vape pen 102 , except for the sleeve base end 118 , which may be left open to allow air to pass through the vape pen 102 or sealed closed by means of the cap 114 .
- the cap 114 is in place over the sleeve base end 118 , the sleeve 104 is at least partially water-resistant, thus protecting the vape pen 102 .
- the pen top end 106 fits into the sleeve top end 116 , and likewise with the pen base end 108 and the sleeve base end 118 ; the directions ‘top’ and ‘base’ remain consistent throughout these Figures, where ‘top’ is the end through which the user inhales vapor, either directly from the mouthpiece 110 of the vape pen 102 , or through the aperture 120 of the sleeve 104 while the vape pen 102 is equipped with the sleeve 104 .
- the sleeve top end 116 is synonymous with the “slit end” or “vapor release end” of the invented device as discussed also herein.
- the ‘base’ is the end through which air is taken into the vape pen 102 , allowing the vapor generated by the vape pen 102 to be inhaled. If the user tries to inhale with the cap 114 closed, the user's ability to do so may be limited because doing so would create a suction effect, like sucking the air out of any closed container. Preferred use would recommend opening the cap 114 to inhale some vapor, with air passing through the sleeve base end 118 into the pen base end 108 to replace the air the user is also inhaling out of the device 100 , then closing the cap 114 again to better protect the vape pen 102 when not inhaling.
- FIG. 1B is a front view line drawing of the invented device 100 of FIG. 1A , with the cap 114 in an open position, such that a volume of air 124 can pass into and through the vape pen 102 and carry a volume of vapor 126 out through the mouthpiece 110 and the aperture 120 , for inhaling by a user.
- FIG. 1C is a front view line drawing of the invented device 100 of FIGS. 1A & 1B , with the sleeve 104 and the vape pen 102 uncoupled and separated.
- this aperture might in some embodiments be just a hole in the sleeve 104 through which vapor 126 can pass.
- the preferred form for the aperture 120 to take is a slit shape, such that a user can widen the aperture by exerting mechanical force on the sleeve top end 116 with their teeth or lips or by sucking vapor through and exerting pneumatic force, but in the absence of force exerted by a user, the aperture 120 has a resting state of being mostly closed, thus allowing better water resistance and preventing vapor from leaking out into empty air when the user isn't inhaling.
- the cap 114 may further comprise some or all of these additional cap features: a cap base 114 A, a cap extension 114 B, a cap strap 114 C, and a cap lip 114 D.
- the cap base 114 A is a flat feature that covers and seals the sleeve base end 118 , such that when the cap 114 is in a closed position, the cap base 114 A physically blocks moisture from getting in.
- the cap extension 114 B is the portion of the cap 114 that extends from the cap base 114 A and detachably couples the cap 114 with the sleeve base end 118 .
- the cap extension 114 B may be by fitting the cap extension 114 B into the sleeve base end 118 like a cork in a bottle, as shown; by having the cap extension 114 B adapted to fit around the sleeve base end 118 as shown in FIG. 7 ; or by any other such means known in the art.
- the cap 114 C can optionally include the cap strap 114 C, which tethers the cap 114 onto the lip or side of the sleeve 104 such that even when the cap 104 is in an open position and not coupled onto the sleeve base end 118 , the cap is more difficult to misplace and is kept handy for fastening closed again.
- Embodiments having no cap strap 114 C, wherein the cap 114 is an entirely separate piece from the sleeve 104 , as presented in FIG. 6 , are also possible.
- the cap 114 may also optionally include the cap lip 114 D as labeled here, which is additional cap base 114 A surface area that extends beyond the size needed just to plug up the sleeve base end 118 , potentially providing more reliable sealing and also making available a tab for a user to grip when opening the cap 114 .
- cap 114 One notes that other means are known in the art for assisting the user in opening the cap 114 , such as a string or cord built into the cap that can be pulled on, and further that in the absence of any such assistance, a user might still utilize fingernails, the edge of a coin, or similar to perform the method of the invention, or squeeze and manipulate the sleeve 104 if the sleeve 104 is made of an elastic material; providing of the cap lip 114 D is preferred in many embodiments, but also optional.
- the cap strap 114 C and cap 114 might be coupled at any angle relative to the vape pen 102 and sleeve 104 , such as with the cap 114 ‘hanging down’ when open, opening to one side or the other, or sticking straight up.
- the sleeve 104 may also fit onto the vape pen 102 at more than one angle, though with the caveat that a snug fit between vape pen 102 and sleeve 104 is preferred.
- a snug fit between the cap 114 and the base end 118 is preferred; the cap 114 is preferably sized and shaped appropriately to fit tightly with the open base end 118 of the sleeve 104 , such that the cap 114 remains in place unless a user intentionally opens the cap 114 .
- a preferred embodiment includes the sleeve 104 being snugly fitted to the vape pen 102 , and made of an elastic material; in this case, bending the sleeve 104 away from the vape pen 102 to assist with drawing the vape pen 102 through the open sleeve base end 118 may be recommended.
- FIG. 2A is an isometric three-dimensional image of a first sleeve embodiment 104 A (hereinafter, “first sleeve 104 A”).
- first sleeve 104 A The first sleeve 104 A and subsequent sleeve embodiments in FIGS. 3A-D and FIGS. 4A-C should all be considered instances of the sleeve 104 .
- the sleeve 104 might differ in shape for several reasons, including but not limited to compatibility with differently-shaped vape devices, improvement in functionality, or providing aesthetic variety to suit user preference.
- compass 200 showing X, Y, and Z axes, wherein the Y axis is parallel to the central axis of the vape pen 102 , and the X and Z axes are orthogonal both to the Y axis and to each other; this definition is consistent wherever the compass 200 appears throughout the Figures.
- FIGS. 2B through 2E are further angles of the same first sleeve 104 A of FIG. 2A .
- FIG. 2C is a side profile view of the first sleeve 104 A.
- FIG. 2D is a perspective view of the first sleeve 104 A that presents the sleeve base end 118 of the sleeve 104 A and the cap 114 .
- FIG. 3A is an isometric three-dimensional image of a second sleeve embodiment 104 B (hereinafter, “second sleeve 104 B”).

- the material 900 is of a uniform thickness T 1 throughout the sleeve 104 , but variations in thickness T 1 of the sleeve 104 might easily occur in certain embodiments, such as at key points for added grip padding or aesthetic appearance, or for compatibly snug fit with particular models of vape pen 102 that may vary in their dimensions.
- Appropriate thickness T 1 of material may vary depending upon the type of material 900 ; as mentioned previously, BPA-free silicone rubber is strongly preferred. Different types of material 900 may vary in durability or in other practicalities, which may prompt variation in sleeve 104 dimensions such as the radii R 1 & R 2 or the thickness T 1 .
- R 1 may have a measurement of within the range of 1 millimeter to 30 centimeters, depending on the dimensions of the vape pen 102 the sleeve 104 is meant to hold.

- the sleeve 104 is formed of the elastic material 900 having an internal resting diameter of less than two times the length of R 1 when the vape pen 102 is not positioned within the sleeve 104 . It is understood that the internal resting diameter of the sleeve is measured as a dimension perpendicular and extending through the central axis A 1 .
- the sleeve 104 is thus undersized to cause the sleeve 104 to preferably press against the vape pen 102 along the majority of the length of the vape pen 102 along the central axis A 1 and thereby form a tight seal that limits fluid passing within the sleeve 104 when the vape pen 102 is residing within the vape pen 102 . If the value U is the measure of the undersize dimension of the sleeve in parallel with R 1 , then the internal resting dimension of the sleeve 104 is equal to 2 times R 1 minus U or 2R 1 -U; the value U preferably is within the range of from R 1 to 0.001 R 1 .

Abstract
A device for inhaling of vapor that includes a water-resistant layer encasing the device to guard against humid environments and/or submersion in liquid. The invention consists of a vaping device, a sleeve fitting over the vaping device, and a cap for closing the sleeve around the vaping device to form a water-resistant layer surrounding the vaping device. The sleeve includes a small aperture through which the vapor produced through the mouthpiece of the vaping device can escape and be inhaled, allowing the vaping device to be used while equipped with the water-resistant sleeve.
Description
- The present invention relates to vaping devices, and specifically to water-resistant vaping devices.
- The subject matter discussed in the background section should not be assumed to be prior art merely as a result of its mention in the background section. Similarly, a problem mentioned in the background section or associated with the subject matter of the background section should not be assumed to have been previously recognized in the prior art. The subject matter in the background section merely represents different approaches, which in and of themselves may also be inventions.
- Electronic vapor devices, also known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes, have gained popularity in recent years. Use of these is commonly termed “vaping”. The scope of the meaning of the term “vaping device” includes vape pens, e-cigarettes, and portable inhalation devices and systems. A vaping device generally consists of a power source such as a battery, a cartridge or container full of liquid that can be heated to produce breathable vapor, a heating element to heat the liquid, and a mouthpiece through which a user can inhale the vapor produced from evaporating the liquid in the cartridge. Most vaping devices are compatible with a variety of liquids and cartridges, allowing a user to select a preferred inhalant, such as flavored vapor or a drug such as nicotine.
- As vaping becomes increasingly popular and pervasive, it's natural for people to want to carry and use their e-cigarettes in more situations and to want accessories that enable them to do so, such as carrying cases, power adapters, or table stands. Further, since a vaping device expels steam at least through the mouthpiece, simply sealing the device in a plastic bag or similar would provide protection, but prevent the device from being usable while protected; the challenge for enabling use of a vaping device in or near water is to protect against external moisture while also not trapping vapor inside the device or preventing use of the device while the protector is in place.
- Therefore, there is a long-felt need to reduce incidence of damage to a vaping device due to water or moisture, while still allowing the device to be used for inhalation.
- Towards these and other objects of the method of the present invention (hereinafter, “the invented method”) that are made obvious to one of ordinary skill in the art in light of the present disclosure, what is provided is a device comprising a vape pen with a base end and a vapor release end; a sleeve for sealing out water or liquid that is detachably coupled with the vape pen and extending from the base end to the vapor release end, with an open end positioned proximate to the vape pen base end; and a sealing cap, which fits with the open base end of the sleeve to form a hermetic, water-proof seal at the base end of the vape pen.
- In preferred application or use of the invention, a user of a vape pen or other vape device inserts their vape pen or device into the sleeve and closes the cap, to at least partially protect the vaping device from liquid. When the user wishes to inhale vapor from the device, the user uncouples the cap and inhales through an aperture at the vapor release end of the sleeve proximate to the mouthpiece of the vape pen, then recouples the cap for increased liquid-proofing. It should be noted that if the cap end is entirely sealed and no air can flow through the device when inhaled from, the air pressure inside the sleeve and device can create at least a partial vacuum suction effect, thus inhibiting the vapor inhalation. As further potential embodiments, a non-airtight cap, such as one including small apertures or mesh, might permit an increased level of air flow at the expense of accepting a decreased level of waterproofing (i.e. mostly splash-resistant, but not very safe to drop or hold underwater). Additionally, the opening and closing could be automated, such that when the user inhales and the air pressure drops, a device opens one or more apertures to allow air flow. However, a manual embodiment also has the virtue of simplicity; the user can manually open the cap, inhale some vapor, close the cap again, and set the device aside, and is always aware of how ‘splash-safe’ their device is currently.
- Regarding the aperture in the vapor release end of the sleeve through which vapor may be inhaled when the sleeve is in place, this feature might vary. In the simplest of embodiments, there is simply a hole in the end of the sleeve through which vapor can escape; when not inhaling, a user might cap the aperture with a fingertip, come up with a makeshift cap, or just accept a small amount of vapor leakage. Slightly more advanced, and preferred, is an embodiment wherein the aperture is in the form of a slit, such that the aperture remains in a mostly closed state (and thus mostly water-resistant) unless and until force is applied. This might be mechanical force, such as squeezing the slit end of the sleeve gently with one's teeth, lips, or fingers to cause the slit to gap open, or pneumatic force, such as sucking on the slit end of the sleeve to draw vapor through the slit. Still other variations of aperture for allowing access to the vapor coming out of the mouthpiece of the vaping device might include other means for accessing or sealing an aperture known in the art, such as maybe a cap that manually opens and closes. Of these, the slit design is considered to be the preferred implementation.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the sealing cap is inserted at least partially within the sleeve when the sealing cap is attached to the sleeve open end.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the invention may include a coupling strip, the coupling strip having a cap end coupled with the sealing cap and a sleeve end coupled with the sleeve.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the sleeve, the sealing cap and the coupling strip form a unitary body.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the sleeve comprises elastic material.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the sealing cap comprises elastic material.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the vape pen shape may include a bulge or protruding feature, and the sleeve is shaped to fit also around this feature.
- In certain preferred embodiments, the vape pen further comprises a mouthpiece extending from the vape pen vapor releasing end extends beyond the vape pen vapor and to a portion of the mouthpiece to form a water proof seal between the mouthpiece and the sleeve elongate body.
- Additionally, some preferred embodiments may include a one-way valve at the mouthpiece of the vaping device, either as part of the device, a separate piece, or part of the sleeve. This feature may assist in minimizing the amount of vapor released into the sleeve instead of inhaled by a user. In some preferred embodiments, the one-way valve might be shaped and positioned such that a user can apply pressure, such as by biting down gently, to the top end of the sleeve (and the one-way valve inside) in order to open the valve and allow the user to inhale vapor.
- In additional preferred embodiments, the sleeve may include features to prevent the vape device from shifting within or falling out of the sleeve. For instance, the sleeve may be made of elastic silicone rubber or similar, and undersized (such as in a range of from less than 0.001 mm to about 3 mm) to snugly fit the vape device such that the sleeve-equipped device would be held in place and inhibited from slipping by friction and pressure between vape device casing and sleeve, but the elastic sleeve could be pulled, bended, or ‘peeled away’ by a user when intentionally placing or removing the sleeve. One should note that not all embodiments of the invention need include non-slip features to be effective, and in the absence of them, a tighter grip or additional caution to manually discourage slipping or dislodging of the vape pen when using one's sleeve-equipped vaping device, particularly when the cap is open, may be advisable.
- Further variations upon the same basic invention are also possible and should be considered as obvious additions of features or variations on the same basic theme. For instance, a sleeve might be fashioned to fit a vaping device that is not an elongate shape, and different sleeves might be produced to accommodate different models of vaping device having different shapes, sizes, and features. A sleeve might have additional features to accommodate use of features of the vaping device while the sleeve is in place, such as features for allowing better access to buttons or controls on the vaping device. Different variations of the invention might be adapted to offer different degrees of waterproofing, ranging from gold-standard comprehensive waterproofing suited for taking the device along on a scuba dive, down to just some added peace of mind on a day at the beach. One might observe waterproofing as rated on sport watches, or cell phone cases that protect the encased device from the elements to greater or lesser degrees, as illustrative examples of the value of safeguarding an electronic device one carries around and uses frequently against mishaps and weather, even with only partial or mild waterproofing. As further obvious additional features go, the sleeve might include a clip or loop to fasten onto something, or elements that make the outside of the sleeve easier or more comfortable to grip. The sleeve might be decorated with patterns or designs, and be available in a range of different colors, and of course the vaping device could be also. The sleeve could include more openings, with or without coverings, such as to allow access to buttons or charging ports or uncover venting or cooling apertures on the vaping device, particularly in embodiments that are water-resistant instead of watertight.
- Regarding manufacture materials, the vaping device might be fashioned of any suitable materials known in the art for building a vaping device. For the casing this might include but isn't limited to plastics, glass, or ceramics. The vaping device at least includes also a power source and a heating element, requiring electrical conduction and heat conduction; these components might be made of various metals or similar appropriate materials as known in the art. The sleeve and cap might be fashioned of any suitable material known in the art for producing a shaped, water-resistant protective layer, including but not limited to plastic, rubber, or silicone.
- Regarding size and scale, vaping devices are generally made to be of a size appropriate to be used by adult-sized human beings, though this is a matter of utility rather than an inherent limit on the size or scale a working device could be built to be. Further, a sleeve as disclosed herein might be fashioned to suit any potential size, scale, or shape of vaping device, and isn't limited with regard to size, scale, or shape except as stated in the claims.

- Throughout this specification, like reference numbers signify the same elements throughout the description of the figures.
- Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 1A ,FIG. 1A is a cutaway front view line drawing of the inventeddevice 100, comprising avape pen 102 and asleeve 104. - The
vape pen 102 further comprises at least a pentop end 106, apen base end 108, amouthpiece 110, acasing 111, and acontrol 112. - The
vape pen 102 is a device used for inhaling vapor, or “vaping”; this kind of device is also known as an e-cigarette, electronic cigarette, or portable inhalation system, and produces vapor for a user to inhale. Thevape pen 102 is an ordinary vaping device as known in the art, and has other internal components as already known in the art that are not shown in this drawing, such as at least a power source, a vaping liquid cartridge, and a heating element. Thevape pen 102 as presented in these Figures should be viewed as encompassing the internal components found in vaping devices as generally known in the art, and accordingly, perceived also as an electronic device that could easily be damaged if exposed to liquid. The invention pertains generally to the outside of thevape pen 102, so no further discussion of the internal components of thevape pen 102 is necessary here. - The
sleeve 104 further comprises at least acap 114, a sleevetop end 116, asleeve base end 118, atop aperture 120, and a sleeveelongate body 122. - In many preferred embodiments, the
sleeve 104 fully surrounds thevape pen 102, except for thesleeve base end 118, which may be left open to allow air to pass through thevape pen 102 or sealed closed by means of thecap 114. When thecap 114 is in place over thesleeve base end 118, thesleeve 104 is at least partially water-resistant, thus protecting thevape pen 102. - It should be noted that the pen
top end 106 fits into the sleevetop end 116, and likewise with thepen base end 108 and thesleeve base end 118; the directions ‘top’ and ‘base’ remain consistent throughout these Figures, where ‘top’ is the end through which the user inhales vapor, either directly from themouthpiece 110 of thevape pen 102, or through theaperture 120 of thesleeve 104 while thevape pen 102 is equipped with thesleeve 104. The sleevetop end 116 is synonymous with the “slit end” or “vapor release end” of the invented device as discussed also herein. Likewise, the ‘base’ is the end through which air is taken into thevape pen 102, allowing the vapor generated by thevape pen 102 to be inhaled. If the user tries to inhale with thecap 114 closed, the user's ability to do so may be limited because doing so would create a suction effect, like sucking the air out of any closed container. Preferred use would recommend opening thecap 114 to inhale some vapor, with air passing through thesleeve base end 118 into thepen base end 108 to replace the air the user is also inhaling out of thedevice 100, then closing thecap 114 again to better protect thevape pen 102 when not inhaling. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 1B ,FIG. 1B is a front view line drawing of the inventeddevice 100 ofFIG. 1A , with thecap 114 in an open position, such that a volume ofair 124 can pass into and through thevape pen 102 and carry a volume ofvapor 126 out through themouthpiece 110 and theaperture 120, for inhaling by a user. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 1C ,FIG. 1C is a front view line drawing of the inventeddevice 100 ofFIGS. 1A & 1B , with thesleeve 104 and thevape pen 102 uncoupled and separated. - Regarding the
top aperture 120 through whichvapor 126 traverses thetop end 116 of thesleeve 104, this aperture might in some embodiments be just a hole in thesleeve 104 through whichvapor 126 can pass. The preferred form for theaperture 120 to take is a slit shape, such that a user can widen the aperture by exerting mechanical force on the sleevetop end 116 with their teeth or lips or by sucking vapor through and exerting pneumatic force, but in the absence of force exerted by a user, theaperture 120 has a resting state of being mostly closed, thus allowing better water resistance and preventing vapor from leaking out into empty air when the user isn't inhaling. - The
cap 114 may further comprise some or all of these additional cap features: acap base 114A, acap extension 114B, acap strap 114C, and acap lip 114D. Thecap base 114A is a flat feature that covers and seals thesleeve base end 118, such that when thecap 114 is in a closed position, thecap base 114A physically blocks moisture from getting in. Thecap extension 114B is the portion of thecap 114 that extends from thecap base 114A and detachably couples thecap 114 with thesleeve base end 118. This may be by fitting thecap extension 114B into thesleeve base end 118 like a cork in a bottle, as shown; by having thecap extension 114B adapted to fit around thesleeve base end 118 as shown inFIG. 7 ; or by any other such means known in the art. Further, thecap 114C can optionally include thecap strap 114C, which tethers thecap 114 onto the lip or side of thesleeve 104 such that even when thecap 104 is in an open position and not coupled onto thesleeve base end 118, the cap is more difficult to misplace and is kept handy for fastening closed again. Embodiments having nocap strap 114C, wherein thecap 114 is an entirely separate piece from thesleeve 104, as presented inFIG. 6 , are also possible. Thecap 114 may also optionally include thecap lip 114D as labeled here, which isadditional cap base 114A surface area that extends beyond the size needed just to plug up thesleeve base end 118, potentially providing more reliable sealing and also making available a tab for a user to grip when opening thecap 114. One notes that other means are known in the art for assisting the user in opening thecap 114, such as a string or cord built into the cap that can be pulled on, and further that in the absence of any such assistance, a user might still utilize fingernails, the edge of a coin, or similar to perform the method of the invention, or squeeze and manipulate thesleeve 104 if thesleeve 104 is made of an elastic material; providing of thecap lip 114D is preferred in many embodiments, but also optional. Thecap strap 114C andcap 114 might be coupled at any angle relative to thevape pen 102 andsleeve 104, such as with the cap 114 ‘hanging down’ when open, opening to one side or the other, or sticking straight up. In some embodiments of the invention, thesleeve 104 may also fit onto thevape pen 102 at more than one angle, though with the caveat that a snug fit betweenvape pen 102 andsleeve 104 is preferred. Further, it should be noted that, while certain Figures herein present gaps of space between elements for drafting clarity to ensure these are perceived as separate elements, a snug fit between thecap 114 and thebase end 118 is preferred; thecap 114 is preferably sized and shaped appropriately to fit tightly with theopen base end 118 of thesleeve 104, such that thecap 114 remains in place unless a user intentionally opens thecap 114. - To uncouple and separate the
vape pen 102 from thesleeve 104 and get to the position ofFIG. 1B from the position ofFIG. 1A , one decouples thecap extension 114B from thesleeve base end 118 and moves thecap 114 aside to leave thesleeve base end 118 open, and pulls thevape pen 102 such as by thepen base end 108 out through the open sleevebase end 118. One notes that a preferred embodiment includes thesleeve 104 being snugly fitted to thevape pen 102, and made of an elastic material; in this case, bending thesleeve 104 away from thevape pen 102 to assist with drawing thevape pen 102 through the open sleevebase end 118 may be recommended. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to

FIG. 5A ,FIG. 5A is an additional preferred embodiment of the inventeddevice 100 that further includes a one-way valve 500 built into thevape pen 102, to allow thevapor 126 generated by thevape pen 102 out of thevape pen 102 but prevent thevapor 126 from getting back in. This is a useful feature at least because it may provide additional moisture-proofing and allow the inventeddevice 100 to operate more efficiently by forcing thevapor 126 out of thevape pen 102 and thesleeve 104 to where thevapor 126 is accessible by the user. The one-way valve 500 may be any suitable form or variety of one-way valve as known in the art. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 5B ,FIG. 5B is an additional preferred embodiment of the invented device that further includes a one-way valve 502 positioned between the mouthpiece 504 of thevape pen 102 and theaperture 116 of thesleeve 104. Thisvalve 502 might be coupled to the inside of thesleeve 104, coupled to the outside of thevape pen 102, or even be a separate piece wedged into place between these pieces. The one-way valve 502 may be any suitable form or variety of one-way valve as known in the art. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 6 ,FIG. 6 is afourth sleeve 104D wherein thecap 114 is a separate piece, with nocap strap 114D connecting thecap 114 to the rest of thesleeve 104. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 7 ,FIG. 7 is a fourth sleeve embodiment (hereinafter, “thefourth sleeve 104D”) with a different model of cap. In a second cap embodiment 700 (hereinafter, “thesecond cap 700”) thecap extension 114B doesn't fit into the interior of thesleeve 104 like a cork, but instead fits around the outside of thesleeve base end 118. As presented here, thesecond cap 700 may still have acap strap 114C, if the design is adjusted accordingly. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 8 ,FIG. 8 presents a second model of vape pen 800 (herein, “thesecond vape pen 800”) having a bulgingfeature 802, and equipped with a fifth embodiment of the invented sleeve (hereinafter, “thefifth sleeve 104E”) that is accordingly shaped with abulge receiver 804, such that thesecond vape pen 800 can fit into thefifth sleeve 104E. One notes that the process of putting thefifth sleeve 104E on and off thesecond vape pen 800 may be complicated by the irregular shapes, and this could be ameliorated by features such as making the sleeve out of elastic material as preferred, or maybe by providing ways to open and seal thefifth sleeve 104E at points other than thesleeve base end 118. - Referring now generally to the Figures and particularly to
FIG. 9 ,FIG. 9 is a diagram based on the 3D model ofFIGS. 2A-2E , presenting further detail regarding a thickness T1 of an elastic material 900 forming thesleeve 104, to include also thevarious sleeve embodiments 104A-Z presented herein. Presented in this diagram is thesleeve 104 with aninterior surface 902, anexterior surface 904, the material 900 filling the space between theinterior surface 902 and theexterior surface 904, a central axis A1, an inner radius R1 comprising the measurement of distance between the central axis A1 and theinterior surface 902, an outer radius R2 comprising the measurement of distance between the central axis A1 and theexterior surface 904, and the thickness T1 comprising the width of the layer of material 900. It is understood that the orientation and dimensions of both R1 and R2 are extending through and perpendicular to central axis A1. - Other Figures included as diagrams herein have opted for improved drafting clarity by leaving space visible between the
casing 111 of thevape pen 102 and thesleeve 104, but embodiments in which thesleeve 104 is made of elastic material 900 and fitted closely around thevape pen 102 are preferred, such that there is actually very little space allowed between theinner wall 902 and thecasing 111. While embodiments having a less snug fit can be anticipated, such as embodiments sized for a broad range of compatibility with different models ofvape pen 102 at the expense of a more specialized, ‘tailored’ fit, a snug fit is preferred at least for the reasons that thevape pen 102 might slip out of thesleeve 104 unexpectedly while thecap 114 is open, that thedevice 100 with a loose-fitting sleeve 104 might be more difficult and less comfortable to grip, or that releasedvapor 126 might accumulate inside of aloose sleeve 104 if given the space to occupy, instead of being made accessible to a user. - The central axis A1, as also mentioned regarding
FIG. 2A , runs parallel to the Y axis as shown in thecompass 200 of the Figures. The first radius R1 and second radius R2 run orthogonally to the central axis A1, and represent inner and outer radius measurements of theelongate body 122 of thesleeve 104. Specifically, R1 is the distance measurement from the central axis A1 of thesleeve 104 to the interior surface of thesleeve 104, and R2 is the distance measurement from the central axis A1 of thesleeve 104 to theexterior surface 904 of thesleeve 104. It is understood that thesleeve 104 area proximate to thetop end 116, thebase end 118, or both may differ in this dimension for aesthetic or functional reasons, such as by tapering, as thetop end 116 is shown to have in this Figure and others, or by broadening, as the base end is shown to have in this Figure and others. In many preferred embodiments, the material 900 is of a uniform thickness T1 throughout thesleeve 104, but variations in thickness T1 of thesleeve 104 might easily occur in certain embodiments, such as at key points for added grip padding or aesthetic appearance, or for compatibly snug fit with particular models ofvape pen 102 that may vary in their dimensions. Appropriate thickness T1 of material may vary depending upon the type of material 900; as mentioned previously, BPA-free silicone rubber is strongly preferred. Different types of material 900 may vary in durability or in other practicalities, which may prompt variation insleeve 104 dimensions such as the radii R1 & R2 or the thickness T1. R1 may have a measurement of within the range of 1 millimeter to 30 centimeters, depending on the dimensions of thevape pen 102 thesleeve 104 is meant to hold. R2 may have a measurement of within the range of 1 millimeter to 30 centimeters, depending on the dimensions of thevape pen 102 thesleeve 104 is meant to hold and the preferred thickness T1 of the material 900. T1 may have a measurement within the range of 0.1 millimeter to 30 centimeters, depending upon practicality and preference. In all instances, the difference between R2 and R1 is equal to the thickness T1 of the material 900, as represented by the formula [R2−R1=T1]. For a preferred fit, the width or diameter of thevape pen 102 is approximately equal to or slightly less than two times R1. - It is further understood that the
sleeve 104 is formed of the elastic material 900 having an internal resting diameter of less than two times the length of R1 when thevape pen 102 is not positioned within thesleeve 104. It is understood that the internal resting diameter of the sleeve is measured as a dimension perpendicular and extending through the central axis A1. - The
sleeve 104 is thus undersized to cause thesleeve 104 to preferably press against thevape pen 102 along the majority of the length of thevape pen 102 along the central axis A1 and thereby form a tight seal that limits fluid passing within thesleeve 104 when thevape pen 102 is residing within thevape pen 102. If the value U is the measure of the undersize dimension of the sleeve in parallel with R1, then the internal resting dimension of thesleeve 104 is equal to 2 times R1 minus U or 2R1-U; the value U preferably is within the range of from R1 to 0.001 R1. - While selected embodiments have been chosen to illustrate the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art from this disclosure that various changes and modifications can be made herein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. For example, the size, shape, location or orientation of the various components can be changed as needed and/or desired. Components that are shown directly connected or contacting each other can have intermediate structures disposed between them. The functions of one element can be performed by two, and vice versa. The structures and functions of one embodiment can be adopted in another embodiment, it is not necessary for all advantages to be present in a particular embodiment at the same time. Every feature which is unique from the prior art, alone or in combination with other features, also should be considered a separate description of further inventions by the applicant, including the structural and/or functional concepts embodied by such feature(s). Thus, the foregoing descriptions of the embodiments according to the present invention are provided for illustration only, and not for the purpose of limiting the invention as defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.
