Description

J ARNOLD. Trunk Lock.
No. 201,480. Patented March 19,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN ARNOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,480, dated March 19, 1878 application filed January 25, 1878.
, marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is a trunk lock or catch consisting of a case containing a bolt turning on a pivot attached to the case, having lugs arranged to be struck by the key, and with beveled faces adapted to a spring-plate, as fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, A represents the look, the view being taken from the back of the lock on the side designed to fit against the surface of the trunk. B is the hasp, provided with holes m for nails or rivets, and constructed at the tongue, which fits into the lock, With a hook, I), strengthened in its attachment to the hasp by a plate, 6, the same being placed at one side of the hook, to leave an opening (in which the plate 0 is placed) for the hooked bolt a. This bolt is cast in one piece, with a plate notched at its other extremity, and pivoted about the middle at d.
The key of the lock h is inserted through a key-hole, and, in being turned, enters the notch between two lugs, i '6, formed at the corners of the plate named, and pushes against the lug t to unlock the bolt, and against t" to lock it.
To retain the bolt firmly in either position, the plate a i i is cast at the back side. with a projecting hub flattened on two sides, as shown at g. A spring-leaf, f, extends across the interior of the case, resting at its ends on seats 12, and bearing at its middle against the flattened hub of the bolt-plate a c i. The bolt is thus firmly held either in the open or closed position.
The plate named may be made, as shown, with a tapering hole in its middle for facility of casting, in which case it fits on a tapered pin cast in the center of the lock; or it may be made with a projecting pin on its front or back, resting in holes or recesses provided in the front and back of the lock.
As shown in the drawing, the lock requires no back plate to aid in supporting the mechanism.
I claim- The combination, with the case A, of the bolt a, turning on a pivot attached to the case, having lugs '6 v1, arranged to be struck by the key, and with beveledfaces adapted to aspringplate, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JoEN ARNOLD.
