Description

Aug- 27, 1935. J. R, MECUDA 2,012,345
CLI NKER TONGS Filed May 7. 1954 ATTOR N EY Patented Aug. 27, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates tol clinker tongs, and more particularly to a clinker tongs adapted for use in connection with large firing equipment.
An object of the invention is to--provide a novel 5 clinker tongs adapted for the efficient removal of clinkers of various sizes not conveniently extractable with devices ofthe type now in use.
`A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the type, a releasable lock for the jaws thereof, in varying juxtaposition.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which:-
l5 Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view in perspective of a clinker tongs embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view in elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a detail View in elevation of the lock.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the
numeral lil represents a tubular member forming the body of the device. At the upper end of the tube is a circular flange I I, forming a part of a locking device to be later described. A jaw, I2, of multiple arcuate form, is xed to the lower end of the tubular member I0, and is bent at the point of attachment to form an obtuse angle in the relation of its body with the tubular member I0.
The arcs, I3, in the jaw I2, are graduated progressively larger from the point of the jaw to its attached end. A rod, I4, is journalled within the tube I 0, and terminates in an integral jaw I5, which latter has a structure opposing and complementary to that of the jaw I 2. The jaw I 5 is bent to form an obtuse angle with rod I4, to conform exactly with the angular relationship of jaw I2 and tubular member I0.
The flange I I is perforated as at I6, to act as a keeper for the bolt I supported in housing I8 attached to the rod handle I9. A coil expansion spring 20 impels the bolt I'I normally downwardly. The bolt handle 2l is provided for manual withdrawal of the bolt I'I.
In operation, the bolt Il is withdrawn to permit opening of the jaws I2 and I5. A clinker may be grasped between the arcs I3 of the proper size, and after the jaws are turned tight, the bolt I'I may be released whereupon it will lock in one of the perforations I6. The tool may then be withdrawn with the clinker securely locked therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:-
1. A clinker tongs comprising a tubular portion and a rod member turnable therein, an extension of said rod member bent to form a handle, an opposite extension of said rod member forming a jaw member having a plurality of joined inwardly convex arcs progressively varying in size, and a complementary jaw member formed on the end of said tubular portion for cooperation with said rod jaw member.
2. A clinker tongs comprising a tubularportion and a rod member turnable therein, an extension of said rod member bent to form a handle, an opposite oblique extension' of said rod member forming a jaw member having a plurality of joined inwardly convex arcs progressively varying in size, and a complementary jaw member formed on the end of said tubular portion for cooperation with saidrod jaw member.
3. A clinker tongs comprising a tubular portion and a rod member turnable therein, an extension of said rod member bent to form a circular handle, an opposite extension of said rod member disposed at an angle thereto forming a jaw member having a plurality of joined inwardly convex arcs progressively varying in size, and a complementaryjaw member formed on the end of the said tubular portion for cooperation with said rod jaw member.
4. A clinker tongs comprising a tubular portion and a rod member turnable therein, an extension of said rod member bent to form a circular handle, an opposite oblique extension of said rod member forming a jaw member having a plurality oi joined inwardly convex arcs progressively reduced in size, and a complementary jaw mem- 35 ber formed on the end of said tubular portion for cooperation with said rod jaw member.
5. In combination, a tubular member, a rod member 'turnable therein, an extension of said rod member bent to form a circular handle, an opposite oblique extension of said rod member forming a jaw member having a plurality of joined inwardly convex arcs progressively reduced in size, and a complementary jaw member formed on the end of said tubular portion for cooperation 45 with said rod jaw member, a lock housing on said rod member adjacent the handle, a bolt therein, spring means for said bolt, and a circular ange on said tubular member having spaced perforations adapted to receive the bolt. 50
