C. H. PRESHO HEADLIGHT RIM WRENCH Filed Aug. 24. 1925 @Hornaq PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. PBESHO, OF ALMA, NEBRASKA.
HEADLIGHT-RIM WRENCH.
Application filed August 24, 1925. Serial No. 52,046.
This invention ap ertains to tools and the primary object of t e invention is to provide a novel tool for facilitating the removing and placing on the rims of headlights.
Another object of the invent1o n 1s to provide an improved wrench for facillt atlng the placing on and the removing of r1ms from automobile headlights, which can be easily adjusted and which will firmly grip the rims to ermit the ready turning thereof without injury thereto. A further object of the 1nvent1on 1s to rovide a novel headlight rim wrench em- Eodying a pair of arcuate grippmg aws having padded faces for preventing in ury to the headlight rims, and a shank carrying. one of the jaws at the outer end thereof and a removable jaw at a point intermediate the ends thereof, novel means being provided for insuring the proper ad ustment of the inner jaw to facilitate the gripping of various sized headlight r1ms.
A still further object of the invention 1s to provide a wrench for automobile head lights of the above character which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that Will be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described,
claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the im-.
I proved wrench,
Figure 2 is a section through the same taken on the line 2--2 of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail section illustrating the means of associating the movable jaw with the shank wrench,
Fi re 4 is a section through the movable jaw 1 lustrating the means of connecting the same with the adjusting shank, and
Figure 5 is a detail section taken on the line 55 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows illustrating the means of mountin the hanger of the movable jaw on the she Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates the improved wrench, which comprises an elongated shank 10 having formed thereon the right angularly extendin arm 11 at its outer end. The upper e ge of the shank 10 is provided with rack teeth 12, for a purpose, which will be hereinafter more fully described. The inner end of the shank constitutes a handle 13 for the manipulation thereof, as will be also hereinafter more fully described. The outer end of the arm 11 has bolted or otherwise secured thereto,- as. at 14 an arcuate ri id jaw 15 for engaging one side of a head ight rim. The opposite side of the headlight rim is adapted to be engaged by an arcuate companion movable jaw 16. The inner faces of the jaws 15 and 16 are preferably lined with a suitable fabric such as brake lining 17 in order to obtain a firm grip upon the headlight rim arid to prevent in ury thereto. The outer face of the movable jaw at the axial center thereof carries a socket 18 for receiving a head 19 of an adjusting screw 20. This adjusting screw 20 is threaded into asuitable nut or threaded bore formed in the outer end of the depending hanger or arm 21. The opposite-end of thearm or hanger 21 is provided with a loop 22 for slidably receiving the shank 1O ofthe wrench and the inner face of the upper Wall of the loop 22 isprox'ided with a rack tooth 23 or dog for engaging the rack teeth 12 of the shank.
In order to facilitate the rotation of the adjusting screw 20, the end of the same remote from the head 19 is provided with a hand crank 24.
In use of the improved wrench, the handle 13 is grasped, and the jaws l5 and 16 are laced on the opposite sides ofthe headight rim and the hanger or arm 21 is raised so as to disengage the teeth 23 from the rack teeth 12 and the hanger and the movable jaw 16 is moved forwardly until the same engages the headlight rim. The screw 20 is now turned by means of the hand crank 24 until the jaws 15 and 16 are brought into gripping contact with the rim and by operating the handle 13, the headlight rim can be readily turned so as to facilitate the removal thereof or the placing on of the same on the headlights. The handle 13 will be disposed tangentially to the headlight rim and thus insure the proper leverage on the rim being had.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but:
What I claim 'as new is:
1. A headlight rim wrench comprising an elongated shank, an arm extending at right angles from one end of the shank, an arcuate jaw rigidly'secured to the arm, a hanger slidably mounted upon the shank for movement toward and away from the rigid jaw, means for holding the hanger in an adjusted position on the shank, an adjustin screw carried by the ban er, and a mova le jaw carried by said ad usting screw, the jaws being arranged at one side of the shank and laterally thereof and in the same plane therewith, whereby the shank will be disposed tangentially to the headlight rim, when the wrench is in use.
2. A headlight rim wrench comprising an elongated shank, a right angularly disposed arm formed on one end of the shank, a handle formed on the opposite end of the shank the ufiper edge of the shank being provided wit ratchet teeth, a rigid jaw of arcuate formation, an adjustab e jawof arcuate formation, means rigidly securing the first mentioned jaw to the arm, a movable arm, a loop formed on the inner end of the movable-arm slidably receiving the shank, a tooth formed on the loop'for engaging the rack teeth of the shank for holdmg the movable arm .in an ad'usted position, the outer end of the mova 1e arm beslidably mounted upon the shank for movement. toward and away from the jaw, means for holding the hanger in an adjusted position on the shank, a movable jaw, means adjustably connecting the movable jaw' with the hanger, the jaws being arranged at one side of the shank and laterally thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
