SHOULDER SHAPING PAD Filed Jan. 29, 1954 INVENTOR EJHOFFMHN ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 6, 1935 I a:
UNITED STATES; PATENT OFFICE l r h 1010.153 SHOULDER SHAPING. PAD
Edward JamesHofirnan; Bremerton, Wash. Application January 29, 1934; Serial No. 708,762

i This invention relates to improvements in wrinkled before it has an opportunity of drying shoulder shaping pads of that character used in unless some means is provided to hold it in shape. the pressing of coats; the principal object or the The shoulder shaping pad of the present ininvention being to provide a. pad that may be vention is designated in its entirety by reference easily andquickly applied to the shoulder por-' numeral 1', and it is of U-shape and of a 'size, "5 tlon of coats of varioussize and whlch will a1it0- adapted to fit within the upper portion of the matically adjust itself to proper size-to shape and sleeve of a coat with therounded or base end smooth out the shoulder portion for the steamthereof fitted to the shoulder seamas is shown in ing operation. Fig. 4.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a e body portion of the D preferably is made 10 pad of the above stated character that need not of canvas, or a similar suitable material and is be readjusted for the completion of any pressing padded, with material of a suitable character, to operation and may be left in place to retain the a des d thiekhess- About its edges it is p shoulder in shape while the material dries after vided with a hem 2 in which a length o sp steaming and pressing. cable 3 is contained. The tendency of this cable 15 More specifically stated, the invention resides in is to Straighten Out d this y e d holds e the provision of a steaming and shoulder shaping p at i m x mum Width. pad comprising a plurality of independent pad The y of the D is Composed of three eesections and a bowed spring of a form and chari Comprising base section 5 extending 2o acter whereby the pad will b expanded t fit th across the rounded base end to fill in about one shoulder to which it is applied, but which permits fourth of the aree- Extending from s ba e the pad to be compressed for easy application and DOItiOII t0 the expendible end of the D along to accommodate itself to coats of different size. its Opposite sides a p sections 5 a d 6.

The inner end portions of 30 1 is a face View of t pad, as expanded the ear sections 6 and 6' overlap opposite sides of t 11 i I the end section 5 as is shown in Fig. 2 to close the Fig. 2 is a cross section of the pad, as seen along inner end of the th line 1 z in Fig. 1. v The spread of the pad at its open end under Fig 3 i a cross t as Seen on line 3 3 influence of the spring 3 is limited by a flexible 5 V i Fi 1, tie strap 8 that is extended across the open end Fi 4 i i illustrating t device as applied and at its ends is sewed or otherwise attached to to the sleeve and h ld of t, the ears 5 and 6' as indicated at 9 and In in Figs.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating an easy 1 and way of holding the device for its application to The Padding s pp ed to e several sec- 40 t, 1 tions, is tapered to the overlapping edges so that Referring more in detail to the drawing the overlapped Darts form 110 up d e that Explanatory t th invention, t n be t t would be detrimental to the pressing operation.
that the usual form of pad used in pressing coats In using the device it i pp ed W t n the 5 is a single piece pad slightly larger than the Sleeve and Shoulder as shown in an sy hand t is held by one hand of the operator method of application being that illustrated in within the shoulder portion of a coat and the coat 5 wherein the p is shown as overlying e is pressed thereby against the steaming board. right forearm of e one app y n it, while he The small size of the pad requires several readholds the p end of the P retracted y pjustments of the coat thereon to complete the ping it with the right hand. The coat is held in 50 steaming operation, then the pad is removed and the left hand in pos t that the p m y b inthe coat placed on a hanger to dry. Since the serted into the sleeve from the upper end. In. steam applied for this operation leaves the mathis way th p y be inserted to the P D terial of the coat slightly damp, it is rather difliposition, then when released will expand to draw cult to prevent the shoulder from becoming the material of the sleeve and shoulder smooth 55 and with the rounded end of the pad seated against the shoulder seam, the shoulder will be shaped and smoothed for steaming.
The advantage of this pad is that it may be easily and readily applied and will automatically adjust itself to size. After once being applied it requires no readjustment during a pressing operation, and may be left in place to hold the garment in shape while it dries.
Pads of this character may be made in different sizes if so desired, and of various materials and the separate sections might be altered in proportion without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A shoulder shaping pad adapted to be applied within the upper portion of the sleeve of a coat and comprising overlapping sections and having a rounded end adapted to seat against .the shoulder seam to shape the shoulder portion of the coat thereto and a. spring enclosed within the peripheral portion of the pad for causing it to expand laterally to smooth out the material of the sleeve enclosing it.
2. A shoulder shaping pad of the character described adapted to be inserted within the upper portion of the sleeve of a coat; said pad being of U-shaped outline and made up of overlapping sections enclosing therein, about its sides and rounded end, a spring like bar having a tendency to straighten out and thereby to expand the pad laterally to smooth out the sleeve portion in which it is contained and to cause the rounded end to conform to the rounded shape of the shoulder.
3. A device as in claim 2 wherein the pad is composed of a plurality of sections with overlapping edges permitting expansion andcontraction of the device, and means being provided for limiting the extent of expansion.
4. A shoulder shaping pad of the character described adapted to be inserted within the upper arm portion of a coat or the like; said pad being of U-shaped outline end enclosing therein about its sidesand rounded end a spring like bar having a tendency to straighten out thereby to expand the pad laterally; saidpad being composed of a pad section across the base end and oppo+ site side pads extended in overlapped relation and also overlapping opposite sides of the base pad, and a tie strap joining the opposite side pads across the open end of the pad to limit the extent of expansion. 7
