Application October 31, 1934, Serial No. 750,781
4 Claims. (01. 311-48) This invention relates to extension tables which hinged edges of the body and the section flush are adapted to be enlarged by the insertion of to abut flatly against the rail ll when the filler an extension or filler leaf between two movable leaf is in storage position upon the cross bars 9. parts of the table top; and the primary object To cause the filler leaf to make this abutting en- 5 of the invention is to provide a convenient means easement with the rail I l when it is inserted in 5 to receive and hold the extension or filler leaf storage position and to retain it in abutting enupon the frame and beneath the table top for gagement, I provide blocks [3 which are secured storagewhile said leaf is not in use. to the rail l l upon the adjacent ends of the cross Another object of the invention is to provide bars 8. These blocks have inclined faces l4 upon means for holding the leaf securely in storage which rests an end of the filler leaf in storage 10 position on the frame and beneath the top of the position and the. tendency is for the filler leaf table so that it will not rattle or become displaced to slide down the inclines, the underfold of the in transporting the table or in moving the table leaf sliding on the cross bars 9, until the body about in use. and underfold abut the rail II. The filler leaf 35 And a further object is to store the extension is thus held snugly in storage position by reason or filler leaf compactly on the frame and beneath of the fact that the tendency of the leaf to slide the table top so that it will not move about in down the inclines I4 holds it in abutting engagethe ordinary use of the table and so that it can ment with the rail H. To hold the filler leaf be easily removed from storage position when rerigidly in storage position for shipment, or at quired for use. other times, apad i5 may be secured to the under- 20 In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated side of one of the sections 8 or 8 to engage the the invention in one type of table for which it is filler leaf in storage position and press it down the adapted and referring thereto inclines I4 which will have the effect of pressing Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the table showing the leaf tightly against the rail II and holding the filler leaf arranged to form part of the table it in that position without displacement or rat- 25 top; tling.
Fig.2 is a transverse sectional view taken at the The cross bars 9, 9 are located in a position on position of the line 2--2 on Fig. 1 but showing the frame below the filler leaf when it is in the filler leaf in storage position; storage position and the two parts 3, Li of the Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of table top are adapted to be opened slightly more 30 Fig. 2; than the width of the filler leaf to permit in- Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view and sertion or removal of the filler leaf from the table Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 2 with a filler top, after which the parts 8, 8' are pushed into leaf having a double fold in storage position. contact with the filler leaf or with each other.
Referring to the drawing, 6 designates general- It is desirable to provide simple means for guiding 35 ly the frame of the table mounted on legs I and the filler leaf into storage position and for centersupporting a top comprising the sections 8, 8' ing it in storage position between the parts 8, 8' which are adapted to be guided in any suitable when opened so that the operator may easily grasp manner in movement toward and from each other the end edge of the filler leaf in inserting or reupon the frame. It will not be necessary to demoving the filler in or from storage position. For 40 scribe the devices which guide and control the this purpose I provide each block is with a guide movement of the parts of the table top because it at the outer edge of its incline, and these guides they form no part of this invention and may be center the filler leaf in storage position as the changed as desired without affecting this invenedge of the leaf slides down the inclines M and tion. also prevent the filler leaf from becoming dis- 45 The frame comprises two cross bars 9 and the placed from storage position or rattling therein. extension or filler leaf i0 is adapted to be sup- In other words, the guides l6 engage the corners ported upon these cross bars between the side of the filler leaf as it slides down the inclines and rails i l, l I of the frame. The filler leaf ID has center the leaf in storage position upon the cross an end section 50 which is hinged to the body bars 9 and flatly abutting the rail H, and they 50 of the leaf to'fold thereunder as shown in Fig. 2. hold the filler leaf in this position against dis- The hinge I2 is fastened to the underside of the placement. Furthermore, by thus centering the body and the fold section [0 of the filler leaf at leaf in its storage position the operator may easily the adjacent edges thereof so that the section insert his fingers or his hands in the opening bewill fold under the body of the filler leaf with the tween the parts 8, 8, when they are separated, to 55 grasp the end of the filler leaf for removing it from storage position, and likewise when returning the filler leaf to storage position.
Instead of the single fold filler leaf heretofore described, I may provide a filler leaf II with two underfolds l8, I8 as shown in Fig. 5, in which case blocks i3 having the inclines would be correspondingly longer than the blocks I3 for the single underfold filler leaf.
I do not limit the invention to the particular embodiment herein shown and described because it may be used in other tables for which it is or may be adapted and I reserve the right to make all such changes as may be necessary or desirable for embodying the invention in other tables, or for other purposes, within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. An extension table comprising a top, a frame, a folding filler leaf adapted to be arranged in storage position upon the frame and beneath the top, and inclined means on the frame engaging one end of the filler leaf in storage position whereby the force of gravity causes said leaf to ride down the incline until the opposite end of said leaf engages the frame and wedges the leaf between the inclined means and the frame.
2. An extension table comprising a top, a frame having a side rail and cross bars, blocks on the cross bars having inclined faces, and a folding filler leaf adapted to be arranged in storage position upon the cross bars and beneath the top with one end engaging the inclined faces on said blocks and the folded end abutting said rail.
3. An extension table comprising a top, a frame, a removable folding filler leaf adapted to be arranged in storage position upon the frame and beneath the top, inclined means on the frame engaging one end of the filler leaf in storage position whereby the force of gravity causes said leaf to ride down the incline until the opposite end of said leaf engages the frame and wedges the leaf between the inclined means and the frame; and means on the frame for centering and retaining the filler leaf in storage position.
4. An extension table comprising a top, a framehaving a side rail and cross bars, a folding filler leaf adapted to be arranged in storage position upon the cross bars and beneath the top, blocks on the cross bars having inclined faces to be engaged by one end of the filler leaf to cause the opposite end of the leaf to abut said rail, and guides on said blocks to center and retain the filler leaf in storage position.
