Description

s. SOHWERDT. Wrench.
No. 200,348. Patented Feb. 12,1878.
- INVENTOR NJETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASKINGTQN, D. O
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. v
SOLOMON SOHWERDT,-OF ROSEVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO J. W. PEOK, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,348, dated February 12, 1878; application filed December 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoMoN ScHwERnT, of .Roseville, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented a new and construction and arrangement of a monkey-- wrench, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the stem or bar of the wrench, with head or jaw B on the end thereof. 0 is the sliding jaw, which is formed with a hub, D, through which the bar A passes. On the under side of the bar A-i's formed a series of notches, a a, made as close together as desired, and of any suitable depth and width, said notches running entirely across the surface of the bar.
In the sides of the hub D are made grooves for the reception of the arms of a stirrup, b, placed therein, the bottom or cross bar of the stirrup passing through a mortise in the bottom of the hub. The upper surface of said bottom bar of the stirrup forms a series of teeth-one or more-to take into the notches a a on the bar A, and thus hold the jaw O stationary at any point at which it may be set. The stirrup b is drawn up to accomplish this purpose by means of a coiled or other spring, 2', placed under a cross-bar, cl, secured to and connecting the arms of the stirrup above the hub D, as shown, the whole thus forming a spring-catch, for holding the jaw O in place on the bar A.
In operation, it is only necessary to press down with the thumb on the cross-bar cl, and the jaw can easily be moved out or in, as required, while as soon as the pressure is removed the spring t' will cause the stirrup to engage with the notched bar and hold the jaw in place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bar A, having jaw B and series of notches a, the jaw O, with grooved and mortised hub D, the toothed stirrup b, with cross-bar d, and the spring i, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SOLOMON SOHWERDT.
