SCREW DRIVER AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,146, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed October 17, 1883.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN SINNOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Screw Driver and Holder Oombined, of which'the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in screw-drivers, and it consists in the combination, wit-h the driver, of a pair of clamp ing and holding jaws recessed to receive the 'head of the screw, and provided with a camlever for operating them, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations, and Fig. 3 is a detail View, of the jaws.
A represents the shank of the screwdriver, provided with a handle, a, and having its lower end formed square, with a tongue, a, adapted to enter the grooved head of the screw. Upon the shank A is arranged a slid-i ing collar, B, to which are hinged two legs or arms, B B, which extend down to the end of the driver, and have their lower ends flattened to form jaws I), having recesses b in their inner sides, adapted to receive the head of the screw and hold it steady. When a screw is to be used, it is placed in the jaws of the legs B and clamped with the square end of the driver-shank against it, where it is firmly held, and may be entered into the wood or other material without dan ger of being driven at an angle. \Vhen it is entered sufliciently to insure its continuing in a straight line, the cam-lever O is thrown out, releasing the jaws, which slide easily upward on the shank and do not interfere with the driving of the screw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

and cam-lever 0, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
