4 Claims.
The invention relates to a lamp and more especially to a gravity feed oil lamp designed for the burning of cocoanut oil as a fuel.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lamp of this character, wherein the wick is raised and lowered in a novel manner and also the oil as fuel isydelivered to the said wick by gravity and the feed of the oil is regulated to increase or decrease the flame when the lamp is lighted.
Another object ofthe invention isA the provision of anlamp of this character, wherein the gravity action thereof is such as to assure the feeding of lcocoanut oil in its original formvand exclusively used as a fuel, there 'being continuous heat applied to the tank for theoilcontent so that the said oil cannot coagulate atlow temperatures anda perfect'combustion is assured. y
A further object of4 the invention is the provision of a lamp of this character, wherein the construction'thereof is novel in its entirety and the wick employed can be readily cleaned when lighted and also can be raised and loweredto vary the flame in the burning V.of the lamp. o
A stillfurther object of the inventionis the provision of a lamp'of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eicientninits operation, neat in 30 appearance, readily and easily controlled or operated, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture. n I
With these and other objects'inview, the invention`consists in the features of construction, combination andV arrangement of parts as will be'hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. Referring to the drawings in detail, the lamp comprises a lower oil reservoir I0 which is the base of the lamp, having rising therefrom the tubesrI I and' I2, respectively, the latter tube being` extended into the reservoir I0, while the tube II is closed off, at I3, from ,communication with said reservoir; These tubes Il and I2, 4at their upper portions, are bent into close relation to each other, as at' I4, and through the medium Vof separable couplings I5 have con-r nection with a feedA tank I6 which, in its top, has threaded therein a removable plug Il which permits the filling of the tank- -IG with oil, the tube Il being adapted rto function as a feeder for oil and having arranged therein a hand operable valve I8 for shutting oif the oil feed or the regulation ofthe same through the tube II.V The tube I2 communicates with a pump cylinder I9 built into the tank I6, it having communication with the latter through the perforalons 20 in' said cylinder and the piston` 2| of the pump is manually operated within the pump cylinder I9, as usual. The purpose of the pump is to lift oil from the reservoir I0 through the l:35 tube I2 into the' tank I 6, there 'being provided a'return check valve 22 in said tube I2 to Vprevent the return flow of the oil in the tank I6 to the reservoir I0,as will be obvious. o
'I'he top of the reservoir Ill has the central upstanding columnar portion 23 in which isarranged the combined Wick and fuel font A24 which, through the union 25, has'communication 'with Vthe feed tube II, so that oil from the tank I6 can be delivered to the font 24, and 45 detachably fitting this font is a burner head'26 providing a wick V barrel 2l for a wick 28. 'Ihe wick is fitted concentrically about a lwick carrying ring 29, it having spaced oilchannels exteriorly therein, these being vertically disposed, while provided atV the interior of the ring 29 are the threads 3| for engagement lwith a companion threaded head 32 'on the head of a 'wick raiser 33 which is of tubular form andirotatably fitted in a cylinder 34 extended centrally 5,5
through the reservoir I and rising centrally of the portion 23 thereof.
Embracing the wick 28 exteriorly thereof and concentrically of the ring 29 is a two-part circular clamp 35 which is slidable in the barrel 21 and arranged in its parts at opposite sides are diametrically opposed guide ribs 36, vertically disposed in the barrel 21, the parts of the clamp 35 being formed with spurs or teeth 31 which Vbite into the wick 28, and the fittingof these parts with the ribs 36 prevents rotation of the wick 28 on the raising and lowering thereof by the wick raiser 33. The head of the wick raiser 33 is telescoped over a center column 38 of the font 24, through which extends the cylinder 34 having the wick raiser 33 therein, this column 38 at its 'upper open end being formed with apertures 39 to allowunspent fuel from the wick to drop back into the reservoir I0, as the column 33 is spaced concentrically from the said cylinder .34.
The wick raiser 33, at its lower end, extends exteriorly of the cylinder 34 and is formed with a knurled circular knob 46 which permits the manual turning of the Vsaid wick raiser 33, so that the ring 29 in its threaded engagement with the threaded head, 32 of the raiser 33 can be moved to shift the wick 28 for raising and lowering thereof, as should be obvious.
VThe burner head 26 is provided with a `chimney holder 4| for a glass chimney 42 having its upper contracted end 43 confronting a walled center opening 44 in the tank I6. This opening 44 functions as a heat passage and is covered by a perforated cap` or crown 45 having centrally thereof a hanger ring 46, its stem-41 being passed through the cap or crown 45 and supporting a heat deector disk 48 centered with respect to the opening 44 in the tank I6 so as to deflect the heat from the chimney 42 ,within the opening 44 in a lateral direction for the heating of the oilV as contained within the tank I6 to assure free fluidity thereof, particularly during low temperatures.
The ring 46 permits the lamp to be hung from a suitable support when the same' is in use.
l Depending-from the bottom of the tank are the hangers 49 for a shade holder' 59 having Vdetachably fitted therein the shade 5I preferably made from glass and having heat'resisting quality, this being also true with respect to the chimney 42. 'Ihe shade holder 55 has fitting with the tubes vII and I2. The hangers are provided with separable couplings 52, so that when it is desired to remove the shade 5| and `the holder 50, the couplings l5 and 52, respec-v tively, are separated, thus detaehing the tank IS and permitting thefreeing of the said holder 5I! and shade 5I, as should be apparent.
. Adjustably fitted in the upper end of the wick raiserr33 is the perforated cup 53 of a dame spreader 547 which may afford the proper spreading condition to the ame. This cup carries an internal cross bar 55 having a central eye 56 for a purpose presentlyY described. On the underside of the flame spreader 54 is a knife -edge wick cleaner 51, it being mader secure .to
said spreader and provided with a central threaded -eye for. accommodating the upper threaded endl of a turning stem or rod 58, the same being passed centrally through the raiser 33. The lower end of the stem or rod 58 is extended exteriorly of the raiser 33 and has a Vterminal hand knob 60 at its exterior end. The
reservoir Vand this is accomplished by the turning of the said cleanerr 51 when in its lowered position. The cup 53 isv retained on the stem or rod 5S as it is coupled therewith in the manner as shown and thus is retained therewith when the spreader '54 is removed.
!2 is non-communicative with the font while the feed tube does communicate therewith through the union 25.
The'biuner head 26 hasthe apertures 65 so that any excess oil accumulated by the wick 28 can return through the burner head 26 to the reservoir ID through these perforations 65, as should be obvious. f
The plug I1 has formed therein an air vent 66 to assure a gravity feed of oil from the tank i6 to the font` 24, whence the oil therefrom is consumed by the flame from the wick 23 on the lighting of the lamp and the heat from this flame is conducted through the chimney 42 to the opening 44 in the tank I6, where the heat is utilized in part for the heating of the oil within the tank I6 tol prevent the same coagulating, especially at low temperatures, and thus assuring perfect fluidity to the oil, it being cocoanut oil, as; the lamp is constructed especially for this kind of oil for fuel. Y
The bottom of the reservoir I0 has a removable plug 61 for the purpose Vof drainage of such reservoir when occasion requires.
The lower end of the tube I2 extended into the |I|V has fitted therewith a suitable strainer 68 for oil content in said reservoir.
The burner head 26 has the reduced threaded portion 69 which is detachably threaded in the threaded neckformed in the font 24 and this burner head 26 is readily separable therefrom.
The defiector disk 48 is suspended from the cap of crown 45 .and is 'directly in the heat path from the chimney 42.
The reservoir I0 in its side wall has provided `therein a transparent window 1I having a graduated scale 12, so that a person can determine the quantity of fuel as may be contained within this reservoir and also when the same has lbeen completely filled. In other words, the level ,be seen in Figure 2 of the drawings.
A mantle holder 14 is provided at the burner `head 26 and the same is attached by hooks 15 which engage through suitable slots provided in the flange 16 outturned from the wick barrel 21. In mounting the mantle holder 14, the plate vconstituting the ame spreader 54 is removed,
leaving the cup 53 in place. The mantle holder 14 with its mantle 11 can be slipped over and attached to the burner head.
, vThe burner head 26 carries a perforated laterally spread apron 18 for the purpose of giving draft or supplying air to the lamp for the combustion of fuel to assure a perfect flame.
What is claimed is:
l. A lamp of the character described comprising an oil reservoir, a gravity feed oil tank, an oil font between the reservoir and tank, an oil feed tube leading from the tank to said font, a burner head on said font, a chimney holder on the head, a chimney fitted in said holder, a wick barrel formed in the burner head, a Wick tting said barrel, a wick raiser operating through said reservoir and manually controlled below the same, and means for delivering oil from the reservoir to the said tank.
2. A lamp of the character described comprising an oil reservoir, a gravity feed oil tank, an
oil font between the reservoir and tank, an oil feed tube leading from the tank to said font, a burner head on said font, a chimney holder on the head, a chimney fitted in said holder, a wick barrel formed in the burner head,Y a wick fitting said barrel, a wick raiser operating through said reservoir and manually controlled below the same, means for delivering oil from the reservoir to the said tank, the said tank having an opening aligned with the chimney, and a perforated cap overhanging the opening above the chimney.
3. A lamp of the character described comprising an oil reservoir, a gravity feed oil tank, an oil font between the reservoir and tank, an oil feel tube leading from the tank to said font, a burner head on said font, a chimney holder on the head, a chimney fitted in said holder, a wick barrel formed in the burner head, a wick fitting said barrel,-a wick raiser operating through said reservoir and manually controlled below the same, means for delivering oil from the reservoir to the said tank, the said tank having an opening aligned with the chimney, a perforated cap overhanging the opening above the chimney, and a heat deflector depending from said cap.
