UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. METH AND WILHELM LINDEMANN, OF GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE-BOX LIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 200,325, dated February 12, 1878 application filed January 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that we, JOHN E. METH and WILHELM LINDEMANN, of Grand Island, in the county of Hall and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Lid for Car- Axle Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of a car-axle box, partly in section, with our'improved lid; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line as m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
This invention is intended to furnish an improved cap or lid for car-axle boxes, by which the greasing of the same may be accomplished quickly, easily, and at a saving of time and labor.
The inventionconsists of a car-axle box with drop lid or cap hinged at the upper edge to the inside of the box, and acted upon by a suitable spring, to close tightly the opening of the face-plate.
In the drawing, A represents a car-axle box, made preferably with an inclined face-plate, having an opening, a. This opening of the box is closed by a swinging and spring-acted drop lid or cap, B, which is hung at the inside of the face-plate, and at the upper corners to screw-pivots b, that pass through the-sides of the axle-box to the interior of the same.
A band or other spring, d, that is secured at one end to a suitable point of support, bears by its free end upon the inside of the lid, and
presses it tightly against the face-plate, so as to close the opening of the same, and prevent not only the escape of oil from the box, but also the entrance of dust or sand into the same.
The filling of the car-axle box with oil is readily accomplished by pressing the lid back with the spout of the oil-can inserted at the lower edge of the lid, the lid closing again as soon as the spout is withdrawn.
The spout may be provided with a guard or protector, so as to be better able to resist the wear to which it is exposed by the opening of the lids in the oiling of the axle-boxes.
This simple construction of drop-lid does away with the bolting or screwing on of the lid, and saves time and labor in oiling, and also money for repairs, as the axles can all be kept easily lubricated, and are less exposed to heating.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a car-axle box, of an interior swinging and spring-acted lid or cap closing the opening of the face-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a car-axle-box, of a swinging and spring-acted lid or cap, hinged at the upper corners to the inside of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
