I GAS BURNER ATTACHMENT 'Filed May 12, 1954 W/yz,
Patented May 21, 1935 GAs BURNER ATTACHMENT Frank H. McFall, Alliance, Ohio, assignor of onehalf to Alvah L. Baker, Alliance, Ohio Application May 12, 1934, Serial No. 725,363
3 `Claims.
'Ihe primary object of this invention resides in the provision of an attachment for gas burners, adapted to raise the combustibility of the gas and reduce the consumption thereof to the minimum.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an attachment for gas burners of such construction that gas, upon being ejected therebeneath, will be intermingled with air and be discharged therefrom in a high state of combustibility.
A further object of this invention resides'in the provision of an attachment for gas burners of such construction that gas will pass directly through certain orifices thereof and indirectly through certain other orices thereof.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of an attachment for gas burners adapted to permit a greater discharge of mixed gas at certain points than at other points thereof.
In addition to the foregoing objects, this invention resides in an attachment forgas burners of such construction that gas ejected therebeneath will encounter baffles adapted to disintegrate the stream of gas and permit air to commingle therewith before discharging the gas, so mixed, through exit orifices.
I Aside from the aforesaid objects this invention resides in the provision of an attachment for gas burners adapted to not only disintegrate the stream of gas ejected therebeneath, but to direct air currents into the gas, so as to createa high state of combustibility at the point of utilization.
With theseand other objects in View, `this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims and, while the disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to make such changes in construction as come within the scope of the claims. I
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a gas burner with which is associated an attachment constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the present embodiment of this invention the numeral 5 designates a gas burner of the conventional type with which is associated an at- (Cl. 15S- 113) tachment lll forming the subject matter of this application.
The aforesaid attachment I8 is preferably formed of cast iron or other suitable material of concavo-convex configuration and is adapted to rest upon the burner 5 through the instrumentality of feet I2 which disposes the periphery I4 of the attachment I0in spaced relation to the burner to provide air inlet passages I6.
Disposed approximately at the lapex or center of the attachment is an orice I8 while disposed adjacent the feet I2 are orifices 20 of lesser diameter than the orifice I8.
Surrounding each orifice 20 on three sides and extending toward the orifice I8 are bafiies 22 which are of substantially U shape, the outer ends of the limbs of each baflie being connected to a part of the inner face of a foot l2, so that each orifice 20 is surrounded by four Walls. These baffles are adapted to defiect gas from the burner 5 as it fiows toward the orifices 20 and, through the provision of the air `passages I6 between the feet I2, the stream of gas, so defiected and disintegrated, is mixed with air prior to passing through the orifices I8, 20 and other orifices 24 which are of a diameter smaller than the aforesaid orifices 20.
The latter orifices 24 are preferably disposed adjacent the baffles 22 in direct communication with the air passage I6 and concentrically disposed inwardly of the orifices 20 and outwardly of the orifice I8.
With an attachment constructed as aforesaid, it is apparent that the stream of gas ejected therebeneath will be properly disintegrated by the baffles 22 whereupon air entering the passages lli` will commingle therewith and, through the provision of variable sized orifices associated with baies arranged as set forth, the gas is not only I mixed to a high state of combustibility but is governed in its excursion through the orifices.
Having thus fully described this invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 1. An attachment for gas burners comprising a substantially inverted saucer shaped member having legs depending from its periphery and having orifices therein, and baflies depending from its under surface, each bafiie having parts connected to a leg to form an enclosure, one of certain of said orifices being within each enclosure.
` 2. An attachment for a gas burner comprising a concave-convex` member having spaced feet depending from its periphery, substantially U shaped baflies depending from the under face of the member, each bae havingl the 'ends of its limbs connected with a part of the inner face of a foot and said member having orices therein certain of which open out into the spaces formed by the baies and the feet.
3. An attachment for a gas burner comprising a concavo-convex member having spaced feet depending from its periphery, substantially U- shaped bafes depending from the under face of 10 the member, each baiie having the ends of its limbs connected with a part of the inner face of a foot and said member having orifices therein certain of which open out into the spaces formed by the baffles and the feet, said orifices being of different sizes, a large orifice being located at the center of the member, intermediate size orifices opening out into said spaces and small orices being located between the inner ends of the baffles.
