My invention relates to a new and improved container.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple and emcient knockdown container 5 which can be readily assembled and which will be strong and durable even though the parts of said containen are made of relatively flimsy material.
Another object of my invention is to provide a container whose walls are made of corrugated box board or other relatively fragile material, said container being properly reinforced.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawing which l5 illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended to generally explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved container, the cover being in the partially open position.
Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively sectional views on the lines 2-2 and 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The body of the container can be made from a single sheet of corrugated box board or other suitable material, said sheet being cut and scored so as to provide a front wall l, a rear wall 2, end walls t and 5, and a cover 5.
While I prefer to make the walls and cover of the container from a single sheet of material, the invention is not necessarily limited to this feature.
'I'he container is provided with end frames 1 and 8, which can be made of Wood or other reinforcing material. These lframes 'I and 8 project inwardly and outwardly relative to the end walls d and 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The reinforcing end frames l and 8 are connected by longitudinal rods which are made of metal or the like.
I prefer to use three such reinforcing rods 9, it and Il. The upper reinforcing rods 9 and I0 are located close to and they may abut or substantially abut the inner surfaces of the Wallmembers l and 2.
Said upper rods 9 and l0 are located close to` the top edges of said wall members l and 2, the drawing being substantially to scale.
The bottom rod Il substantially abuts the upper surface of the bottom wall member 3 and saidbbottom rod li is centrally located.
The. metal reinforcing rods 9, I0 and Il are kept under tension so as to force the end frames 'l and 8 against the adjacent edges of the wall members l and 2. For this purpose the ends of 55 the reinforcingrods 9 and I0 and Il may be threaded, and said ends may be engaged by nuts l2, which may be tightened as desired.
Likewise, and in order to facilitate the assembly, each of said rods 9, IIJ and II may be provided with an enlarged head. 'I'he enlarged 5 heads I5 and l'l of the rods 9 and Il are shown in Fig. 3. This construction renders it possible to use a single tightening nut I2 for each of said reinforcing rods.
The vertical edges of the front and rear wall- 10 members abut the inner surfaces of the end-wall members 4 and 5. Hence, when the nuts I2 are tightened, the end-wall members 4 and 5 are forced into abutting contact with the vertical edges of the wall-members l and Z. This con- 15 struction provides very tight joints at the vertical edges of the box.
The end frames 1 and 8 may be made of wood or other suitable light material.` The only metal parts which are required, namely, the rods 9 and l0 and H, 'are concealed when the box is closed, and they do not obstruct the interior of the container so that articles may be conveniently inserted and removed.
The end frames 'l and 8 are detachable from the body of the container so that the entire device can be taken apart, for convenience in storing and shipping.
The improved device makes it possible to make the box from relatively fragile and bendable box board since it is reinforced by the rigid frames l and 8, and by the rigid rods 9, l0 and I l.
The front wall and the rear wall are prevented from moving inwardly by the rods 9 and I0. The end walls 4 and 5 are prevented from moving inwardly, because they abut the end vertical edges of the front wall l and the rear wall 2.
Hence, the device is prevented from collapsing even though the rigid reinforcing end frames 'l and 8 extend only over the outer surfaces of the front wall and the rear Wall and the end walls.
The front wall and rear wall, and the end walls, are turnably connected to the bottom wall 3.
The reinforcing frames 1 and 8 are of L-shaped 'cross section and they extend over the ends of the outer surfaces of the front wall and rear wall and of the end walls and the bottom wall, Hence the device rests upon the end-frames so that the bottom wall 3 is spaced from the support upon which the box rests. The cover is made shorter than the body of the box so that when the cover ls closed, its edges snugly abut the inner faces of the reinforcing frames 'l and 8, thus providing a tight closure.
It will be noted that the frames l and 8 are 5 one-piece rectangular frames so that it is not necessary to use more than three longitudinal rods. When I specify said one-piece construction, I do not wish to be limited to the use of integral frames. as said framescould be made of two or more parts, suitably connected to each other.
The cover can be held in the closed position by any suitable means.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions can be made without departing from its spirit.
v I claim:
1. A container comprising a front wall and a. rear wall and end walls and a bottom wail, said front wall and rear wall and said end walls being turnably connected to the bottom wall, said container having one-piece rectangular frames of L- shaped cross section which abut the ends of the outer surfaces of the bottom wall and the front wall and the rear wall and the end walls, rods connected to and located intermediate said frames, said rods being located sumciently close to the inner surfaces of the front wall and the rear wall to prevent said front wall and said rear wall from moving substantially inwardly, said container having a cover which is turnably connected to the rear wall, said cover iitting between the inner edges of the tops 0f the frames.
2. A container comprising a front wall and a rear wall and end walls and a bottom wall, said front wall and rear wall and said end walls being turnably connected to the bottom wall, said container having one-piece rectangular frames of L-shaped cross section which abut the ends of the outer surfaces of the bottom wall and the front wall and the rear wall and the end walls, rods connected to and located intermediate said frames, said rods substantially abutting the inner surfaces of the front wall and the'rear wall and the inner surfaces of the bottom wall, said container also having a cover which ts between the inner edges of the top portions of said frames.
