This invention relates to an improved cover for a mattress and similar articles.
It is the object of the invention to provide a cover of textile material for the body of a mattress to exclude eectively dust therefrom and to maintain its cleanliness. My improved cover is characterized by a marked simplicity in construction and economy in manufacture. Only little additional material and working operations are required for my construction over those generally in common use; yet a complete seal against the access of dust to the mattress is attained. Such a seal is only approximated in the structures of the prior `art unless resort is had to intricate and costly expedients. It is a further object of vthe invention to provide a mattress cover composed of a vmain casing and a closure therefor which may be applied easily to the mattress to be covered by a person without the need of additional aid. vFurthermore my construction permits the turning of the mattress without affecting the comfort -of the sleeper thereon.
Other objects and purposes will appear from a more detailed description of the invention following hereinafter, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein; i
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved mattress cover wherein the mattress `is 'in fully covered position, f
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mattress with the closure for the open end of the cover in open position, f
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cover with the mattress therein,
Fig. 4 is a bottom View of a portion of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a perspective View corresponding to Fig. 1 vof a second embodiment of the invention, and
Fig. 6 is-a perspective view of the second embodiment of the invention showing the closure of the cover in partially opened position.
In Fig. 1 is shown a cover which is designed to cover a mattress .or boxed spring body I to exclude dust therefrom. This cover is composed of a casing 2 which is adapted to be slipped over the mattress and a closure therefor to close effectively the open end of the casing despite shrinkage of the cover or changes in shape of the mattress. The casing 2 is formed by the end wall 3 of substantially rectangular contour and the four lateral walls 4, 5, 6 and 'I, also of substantially rectangular contour extending therefrom. The walls 4 and 5 correspond to the bottom and top of the mattress, respectively, and
the walls 6 and l correspond to the sides thereof. The opening 8 at the end of the casing opposite to the end wall 3 is congruous to the latter and 4is substantially coincident with the end of the body I. lateral walls as such, is employed in a relative sense only, and for the purposes of the instant invention, the end Walls may be of lesser area, of the same area or of greater area than some of the lateral walls. may be applied as well upon the side of a mattress cover as upon the conventional end thereof.
My novel closure for the casing is formed by sewing an end wall II to the edge I2 of the bottom lateral wall 5 and lateral wings I3 and I5 yto the horizontal edges I4 and I6, respectively, adjacent the edge I2. An additional wingY I'I extends between Wings I3 and I5 and is stitched to the end wall II. The closure in effect pivots about the edge I2, and when itis brought from '20 the position shown in Fig. 2'to its closed position shown in Fig. 1, the wings I3, I5 and I I overlap the extremities of the lateral walls 4, 6 and l and effectively cover the exposed end of the mattress body. Buttons I8 on the casing cooperate with button-holes I8 on the closure to maintain the closurev in 'positive engagement with the casing. Any other suitable fastening means may be employed, such as hooks and eyes, snap-fasteners, ties, etc. The design of the improved mattress cover gives rise to an effective closure of fthe casing even though no fastening means is provided or if such fastening means is availed of only partially.
In operation, the mattress casing may be slipped onto the mattress by a single personv without the need of additional help through the opening 8, at which time the closure is folded back and offers no hindrance to the movement ofthe cover. When the casing covers the mattress completely, the closure is lapped over the open end of the casing quickly and easily, and may be fastened thereto to maintain a positive engagement.
In the second embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the closure 3a for the casing Za'is formed by the end wall 2Ia sewed to the vertical edge 22a. of one of the sides and horizontal lateral Wings 24a and 25a. sewed to the horizontal edges adjacent thev vertical edge 22a,
one of theedgesonly, 23a, `being shown in the drawings. The additional 'wing 21ar is bridged between the wings 24a, and 25ct and isv attached to the endV wall Zla. In this embodiment, the closure '3a in effect pivots about the edge 22a and when it is brought from its open position to its The designation of the end walls and Thus the closure described below Y vo n tan'gular contour extendingatherefrom :for-subclosed position shown in Fig; 5, the wings thereof overlap the extremities of the casing 2a to obmeans in the form .of rubber buttons I8a on the "claims, '-7
tain an effectiveV sealing thereof..V Fastening casing cooperating with holes- Ia' on the closure are provided to maintain theclosure in positive engagement with the casing;
i' VIf desired; a plurality of pairs of short-tapeV Y lengthsk IS maybe seWed to the upper andV lower Vvention disclosed herein. VThe respective pairs edgesO-the opening 8 in both forms of the inof .tape lengths Vmay Ybe tied together after the .casingY 2 is slidover` the mattress and Vbefore the closure is' applied over the open end;V These ties 'Y 15 Yassure a snug fit and a perfect covering. 1
The Vedges of the cover maybe continuous, stitched plain or bound with tape. Thus thewalls 4, 5,' 6,'and 'I in the rst modification 'described' above, may be inV the form of Va continuous piecei Y' of material seamed at only one edge, or the end wall 3 vmay be',V continuousY with any one or two opposite lateral walls. Likewise the lateral-Wings I3 and I5 may formintegral continuationsj ofA wings I'I, or the end Wall I I VmaybeV a continua- 2,
tion of either or both'walls 5 and I1. VThe invention may befrealized in many waysas long asthe final conguration of the casing and closure over the mattress, as illustrated-herein, is obtained. 'My improved construction of a mattress cover, as illustraed by two preferred embodiments there-Y of, may be'altered inV several .respects Without departing from the spirit of -theinventioni Thus,
i'or'example, the wings -I3 and I5 maybe cut on, *asia bias ,with lessor no1 sewing thereof at'the edgesfIIland yIl respectively.
