10 Claims.
Power wringers are preferably provided with some safety release mechanism. Some of such safety release mechanisms are provided withdetachable tops and the release is effected by such detachment. Where this manner of release is utilized the violent projection of the top through the action of the pressure means of the wringer often carries the top away from the wringer to an objectionable extent. The present invention is designed to arrest this movement after the top has moved a sumcient distance to properly release the pressure and involves devices for accomplishing this purpose which are simple and The invention also contemplates devices for this purpose so. formed that the top may be readily detached to permit the convenient assembling and serving of the wringer. Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.

The wringer frame is made up of the base I, and side stiles 2. These are preferably formed of sheet metal, the side stiles being of box form. Wringer rolls 3 and 4 have the usual shafts 5 y and 6 and these are journaled in bearing blocks 1 and 8 mounted in the side stiles. A spring 9 operates on the upper end of the upper bearing block and is put under tension by a screw it! operating in a nut l, the nut being carried by the top 12. The cross bars have perforations 21 which receive the lips 24 .and thus lock these cross bars with the trip plate. Operating bars mm are formed on the ends of the bars 25.
In order to effect a release of this mechanism the operator hits the bar 21a. This swings the trip plate, releases the latches I4 and these swinging up release the hooks I3 and thus release the top. The full force of the spring is back of this release and violently throws the top upwardly. Inasmuch as the free release to a point that will relieve pressure is desirable the immediate removal of pressure from the spring is effective.
It is desirable, however, to prevent the complete discharge of the top from the wringer which, under the impulse of the spring, might To accomplish this the present mechanism is provided. Side straps, or bars 28 are connected by a cross piece 28a at the bottom, these being formed preferably of a single stamping and thus in the final shape are bail-shaped. These bails are slidingly mounted in and guided by the walls of the side stiles and loop aroundthe ends of the upper shaft of the roll and form sliding guides for the upper bearing blocks 8, the sides of the bails being provided with inturned lips 29 to complete the guides for the bearing blocks. The upper ends of the bails have inwardly extending projections 30" which are provided with elongated slots 3| through which the rods l5 extend. The pivotal connection between the bails and the cross bar is desirable particularly where the bails extend into the side stiles in that if one side only of the cross bar is released of the top from a horizontal position. The upper ends of the stiles have inturned arresting lips 32 which are in the paths of the cross pieces 28a of the bails as the bails are moved upwardly in the side stiles. tends below the upper bearing blocks, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so that there is a free movement upwardly of the top bar for some distance before the upper roll shaft is engaged.
The operation of these arresting bars, or bails, is as follows:When the top is released to effect a release of the pressure on the rolls the top in its upward movement carries with it the suspended bails 28. These bails pick up the upper roll in the upward movement, thus not only immediately relieving all pressure from the operator who may be caught, but also retarding to some extent the violent up-throw of the top.
With the further upward movement of the top the cross pieces of the bails engage the lips 32 and the top is thus definitely arrested. All that is necessary to re-set the wringer is to release the pressure on the spring, trip the top back into position so that the latches catch and then set the tension on the spring.
It is desirable to have the top readily removable and this is accomplished in the present structure by forming the lips 32 adjacent the top of the stile so that by tilting the bails with a side-swinging movement, as shown in Fig. 3, the inner edge of the bail will clear the opposite top edge of the stile so that the bail can be swung clear of the lip 32. By swinging the top in one direction one of the bails may be released and by reversing the movement in the opposite direction the opposite bail can be readily released.
What I claim as new is:-
1. In..a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; rolls having shafts mounted in the stiles; pressure means for the rolls; a top for the frame receiving the counter-pressure from the pressure means; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame; and bails pivotally secured to the top and looping the upper roll shafts, said bails and stiles having interlocking arresting parts limiting the upward movement of the top as it is released.
2. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; rolls having shafts mounted in the stiles; pressure means for the rolls; a top for the frame receiving the counter-pressure from the pressure means; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame; and balls pivotally secured to the top and loop ing the upper roll shafts, said bails and stiles having interlocking arresting parts limiting the upward movement of the top as it is released, said parts being detachable.
3. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having hollow side stiles; rolls having shafts mounted in the stiles; a detachable top arranged on the stiles: bails pivotally secured to the G D The lower end of the bail exand extending into the stiles and looping the ends of the upper roll shafts; bearing blocks for the upper shaft slidingly mounted in said bails; roll pressure means exerting counter-pressure on the top; a safety release acting by releasing the top; and interlocking parts between the bails and stiles limiting the upward movement of the top when released.
4. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; wringer rolls; bearings for said rolls mounted in the stiles; a top for the frame; a spring between the top and the upper bearings exerting pressure on the bearings and counterpressure on the top; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame at least at one end of the top; and top arresting means slidingly mounted in and having guiding engagement with a wall of a stile, said means directly looking with the stile limiting the upward movement of the top upon release.
5. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; wringer rolls; bearings for said rolls mounted in the stiles; a top for the frame; a spring between the top and the upper bearings exerting pressure on the bearings and counterpressure on the top; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame at both ends of the top, and top arresting means slidingly mounted in and having guiding engagee ment with the walls of each stile, said means looking directly with the stiles limiting the upward movement of the top upon release.
6. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; wringer rolls; bearings for said rolls mounted in the stiles; a top for the frame; a spring between the top and the upper bearings exerting pressure on the bearings and counterpressure on the top; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame at least at one end of the top; and top arresting means slidingly mounted in a stile, said means looking directly with the stile limiting the upward movement of the top upon release, said arresting means being movable relatively to the top bearing.
7. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; rolls mounted in the stiles;
pressure means for the rolls; a top for the frame receiving the counterpressure from the pressure means; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame at least at one end of the top; and top arresting means slidingly mounted in and having guiding egagemet with the walls of a stile, said means looking with the stile limiting the upward movement of the top upon release, said means having a pivotal connection with the top.
8. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; rolls mounted in the stiles; pressure means for the rolls; a top for the frame receiving the counterpressure from the pressure means; a safety release device detachably securing the top on the frame at least at one end of the top and top arresting means slidingly mounted in and having guiding engagement with the walls of a stile, said means locking with the stile limiting the upward movement of the top upon release, said means having a pivotal connection with the top, said connection having lateral freedom.
9. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having a base and side stiles forming a U shaped structure open at the top; rolls mounted in the stiles; pressure means for the rolls; a top bar mounted on the stiles receiving the counterpressure from the pressure means; a safety release device detachably securing the top bar; and an arresting device pivotally secured to the top bar and extending into a stile, said device and stile having directly engaging, interlocking parts limiting the upward movement of the top as it is released.
10. In a wringer, the combination of a frame having hollow side stiles, rolls having shafts mounted in the stiles, a detachable top arranged on the stiles, a bail pivotally secured to the top and extending into the stile and guided thereby and looping the end of the upper roll shaft, a bearing block for the upper shaft slidingly mounted in said bail, and means on the bail forming a guideway on the bail for holding the bearing block in sliding relation.
