  • Power wringers are usually supplied with what is known as safety releasing devices and these involve a means which may be readily and form the rigid operated by the operator to release the pressure on the wringer rolls in case of emergency. Power wringers are usually supplied with what is known as safety releasing devices and these involve a means which may be readily and form the rigid operated by the operator to release the pressure on the wringer rolls in case of emergency. If the release is accomplished with the mechanism entirely included within a permanent rigid frame sufficient clearance must be pro vided to permit of the releasing movement of the rolls. Where a part of the wringer frame itself, as the top rail,'is released through the action of the safety device the force of the spring following the release moves the part of the rail with such violence as to be usually objectionable. The present invention is designed to obviate these objections and to improve the wringer structurally; Features and details of the invention will appear from the specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment'of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a front elevation, partly in section, showing the rolls under tension.

1 marks the side stiles, and 2 a bottom cross piece. These are rigidly secured together portion of the frame.
3 and 4 mark the lower and upper rolls respectively. blocks 5 and 6, the upper block being slidingly mounted in the side stile. The "rods 7 and 8 of the rolls extend through a slot 9 formed in the front of the stiles, the stiles being boxshaped except for this slot and formed of sheet metal.
A spring 10 rests on the upper block 6. It has a socket 10 at its center into which a ball 11 extends, the ball being arrangedat the end of an adjusting screw which is screwed into and forms a part of. a release pin 12. The release pin extends through an opening 13 in a fitting 14. The fitting 14 is mounted in a cross rail 15. The release pin 12 has a shoulder 16 which when brought into register with slots 13 permits the upward movement of These are carried in bearing the pin. A cam 13 is arranged at the bottom of the fitting, and the shoulders 160perating on the cams as the pin 12 is turned into locking position, as shown in Fig. 1, depress and add to the tension of the spring. A handle 17 is secured to the pin 12 which may be readily grasped by the operator to swing the release pin and thus effect, the release, or to swing the pin 12 to locking position.
The top rail is of channel form having side walls 18 and an end wall 19 in continuation of side walls. This is adapted to slide down over and house and cover the upper ends of the stiles.
Locking notches 20 are arranged in the upper inner corners of the side stiles. Latches 21 are journaled on pins 22 extending from side to side of the top rail. The latch 21 has a locking shoulder 23 which is adapted to swing into the notches 20 and engage the upper wall of such notches so as to lock the top rail with the side stiles. The front edges of the shoulders 23 are beveled so that as the top rail isplaced over the top of the stiles the latch is swung outwardly through the camming action of these beveled edges until the notches are reached and then the catches swing into locking position. The latch is formed with the two side plates and a connecting bar 25. A rear projection 24 extends from the bar and engages the top of the top rail forming a stop so locating the latch that the beveled edge of the shoulder 23 will con- Y tact the top of the stile as the top rail is moved to place. The latch preferably operates as shown by gravity, the pivot 22 being off-set from the shoulder 23 sufliciently to accomplish this purpose.
In the operation of the release device with the parts set as in Fig. 1, if an emergency occurs the handle is swung releasing the pin 12. The spring moves upwardly. This releases the tension' on the rolls and with the upward movement incident to the release theends of the springs are carried up into contact with the cross bar. The pressure on the cross 'bar having been relieved these latches are readily released and the top bar as a whole is released. At the moment of the release of the cross bar, however, the spring has been relieved through the primary release so there is no violence accompanying the release of the top bar. Thus an unlimited clearance is given to the'movement of the top bar with a frame of comparatively slight height.

It is desirable to have the mechanism so arranged that with the removal of the top bar, the top roll is also removed. To this end the straps 26 are provided. These straps have a central notch 27 through which the rods extend. The straps have extensions 28 and these extensions are provided with hooks 29 at their upper ends which are hooked over the pins 22 forming the pivots of the latches.
When the top rail is released and lifted the upper roll is carried with it.
Aside from its operation as a secondary release the latch construction for securing the top rail to the side stiles forms a convenient form of assembly for servicing the wringers. The top rail may be readily removed and the rolls thus be rendered removable for renewal, or repair, and the parts may be readily assembled without the use of tools.
What I claim as new is 1. In a wringer, the combination of a frame; rolls mounted in the frame; tension means exerting pressure on the rolls; a safety release device releasing tension on the rolls; and a secondary release operated through the release of the tension device extending the release clearance of the rolls.
2. In a wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the stiles; a top rail extending from stile to stile;
a tension means exerting tension on the rolls; a safety release device releasing tension on the rolls; and. locking means securing the top rail to the stiles, said locking means being released through the release of the tension on the rolls.
3. In a'wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the stiles; a top rail extending from stile to stile; a tension means exerting tension on the rolls; a safety release device releasing tension on the rolls; and locking means securing the top rail to the stiles, said locking means compris ing a latch operated 'as the tension is released through the safety release.
4:. In a wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the frame; a top rail mounted on the stiles; a safety release device mounted on the top rail; a tension device comprisinga connection between the safety release device and the rolls; and locking means securing the top rail on the side stiles comprising a latch in the path of and released bythe connection when the connection is released by the safety release device.
5. In a wringer, the combination of a wringer frame; rolls mounted in the wringer frame; a safety release device; a tension means exerting pressure on the rolls, said tension means comprising a connection between the safety release device and the rolls; a top rail; and locking means securing the top rail to the frame comprising a latch in the path of and released by the connection when the connection is released.
6. In a wringer, the combination of a wringer frame; rolls mounted in the wringer frame; a safety release device; a tension means exerting pressure on the rolls, said tension means comprising a connection between the-safety release device and the rolls; a top rail; and locking means securing the top rail to the frame comprising a latch in the path of and released by the connection when the connection is released, said latch comprising side members having latch shoulders, a connecting cross bar, and a stop extending from the cross bar and engaging the top roll.
7 In a wringer, the combination of a frame having side stiles; rolls mounted in the side stiles; a top rail of channel construction extending from and housing the tops of the stiles; a safety release device mounted on the top rail; tension means comprising a connection between the safety release device and the rolls; and a locking device between the top rail and the stiles; said locking device being released through the release of the connection.
8. In a wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the stiles; a top rail extending from stile to stile; a tension means exerting tension on the rolls; a safety release device releasing tension on the rolls; locking means securing the top rail to the stiles, said locking means being released'through the release of the tension on the rolls; and straps connecting the top rail with the upper roll.
9. In a wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the side stiles; a top railof flange construction extending over the top of the side stiles and housing the same; and latches housed within the top rail forming locking means between the top"rail and the-side stiles.
10. In a wringer, the combination of a frame comprising side stiles; rolls mounted in the side stiles; a top rail of flange construction having down-turned ends extending over and housing the tops of the stiles; and latches mounted within the top rail forming locking means between the top rail and the side stiles.
