LATCH BOLT.
Application filed March 20, 1926.
This invention relates to latch bolts and the object of the invention to provide a foot operated latch bolt whlch may be depressed to latched position by the foot and which may be released to-upwar'd movement by a spring. Another ob]ect ofthe invention is to provide a latch bolt which is held.
against the tension of the spring, a catch being provided which may be operated by the foot to release the bolt to retraction by the spring. Another object of the invention is to provide a latch bolt of the character described which is formed practically entirely of sheet metal parts resulting in a very low manufacturing cost and at the same time provide a device which is simple and efficient in operation. These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a view of the latch bolt as attached to a door.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 5 a semi-cylindrical casing 1 is provided having flanges 2 provided with apertures 3 for securing the device to the door. The casing 1 is formed to provide a longitudinal opening 4 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and the two sides of the casing are secured together in spaced relation by a rivet 5. A tubular latch bolt 6 is formed of sheet metal and is slidable lo11gitudinally in the casing 1 and this tube 6 is provided with diametrically opposite slots 7 and 8 in which an actuating member 9 is mounted, the member 9 extending diametrically through the tube 6. The casing 1 is provided with a slot 10 shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 through which one end of the member 9 extends, the opposite end of the memher 9 being provided with a notch 11 engaging over rivet 5.

wardly into engagement with the cam face 16 of the member 9, the plunger tending to force the member 9 to the right of Figs. 2 and 3. A rivet 17. as shown in Fig. 4 is secured in the member 9 and extends from opposite sides thereof the rivet 17 engaging the edges of the tube 6 when in the position shown in Fig. 2 and preventing movement of the member 9 to the left. The slot 7 is provided near the upper end with a pair of notches 18 opening thereinto and into which the rivet head 17 may pass as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the member 9 is provided with an upwardly extending end 19 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 which is adapted to engage the plunger 15 and limit movement of the member 9 thereby to the right so that the rivet heads 17 in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 are positioned centrally of the notches 18. By means of the flanges 2 the casing is secured to a swinging door and the tubular bolt 6 is adapted to be extended into an aperture provided therefor in the floor or is adapted to be extended through an apertured plate provided for this purpose. The bolt is in the uppermost position as shown in Fig. 2 when moved to position over the aperture in the floor and by pressing down on the cap 12 with the foot the spring 14 is compressed increasing the pressure of the plunger 15 and as the bolt is moved downwardly the notches 18 are brought to position in alignment with the rivet heads or legs 17. At this time the pressure of the plunger 15 engaging the cam face 16 moves the member 9 to the right until the upper end 19 thereof strikes the plunger 15, at which times the rivet heads 17 are positioned centrally of the notches 1S and thus prevent upward movement of the bolt. By this construction the lugs 17 engaging in the notches 18 act as catches for holding the bolt in its lowermost position. To release the bolt it is only necessary to push inwardly on the extending end 20 of the member 9 either with the hand or foot which will move the member 9 until the lugs 17 pass out of the notches 18 at which time the spring 14 will move the bolt to the uppermost position to disengage the lower end. thereof at which time the door may be opened.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and eflicient in operation, will not easily get out with slot-s through which the catch member extends, one ofthe slots opening into a pair of'notchesprovided in the'bolt, a pair of lugs on'the catch-member for engaging in the said notches, a spring pressed plunger within the bolt engaging'the catch member, the-arrangement being such that as the bolt is moved to locking position the spring pressed plungermoves the catch member to engagement inthe notches of the bolt, the catch member being manually movable to the unlocked position.
2. A latch bolt comprising a casing having a pair of outwardly extending flanges, a catch membermovable-diametrically of the casing,-a hollow bolt slidable vertically in the casing, the said bolt being provided with slots-through which the catch member extends, the bolt being provided with a pair of notches into which one ofthe slots open, a pair of lugs on the catch member for engaging in the said notches when the bolt is moved to the locked position, and yieldable means within the bolt tending to move the catch member to the locking position, the catch member being manually movable to the unlocked position.
3. A latch bolt comprising a casing having a pair of outwardly extending flanges, a catch member movable diametrically of the casing, a. hollow bolt slidable vertically in the casing, the said bolt being provided with A slots through which the catch member extends, the bolt being provided with a pair of notches into which one of the slots opens, a pair of lugs on the catch member for engaging in the said notches, a plunger in the bolt engaging the said catch member, a spring within the bolt engaging the plunger, the arrangement being such that as the bolt is moved to the locking position the spring is compressed to move the catch member to locking position.
4:. In a latch bolt, a hollow casing, a hollow bolt slidably fitting therein, a catch member slidably mounted in the casing, the said mounting consisting of a. pin attached to the casing and a slot formed in one end of the catch member engaging over the pin permitting limited movement of the catch member transversely of the direction of movement of the bolt, the said bolt having slots through which the catch member 0:;- tends and the casing having a slot through which the end of the catch member opposite the pivoted end projects, a coiled spring within the bolt, said catch member and the said bolt being further provided with means adapted to hold the bolt in retracted position against the pressure exerted thereon by the spring, and transverse movement of the catch member toward the pivot releasing the bolt to projection by the spring.
