The invention pertains to spools for containing adhesive plaster or the like, and has especial reference to spools or reels of that class known as knock-down spools, consisting of a tubular body or core constituting a hub upon which a roll of adhesive plaster may be wound, and heads applied to the ends of the hub after the adhesive plaster has been applied thereto.
In practice, the tubular bodies and heads are supplied separately to the manufacturer of adhesive plaster. In packaging the tape, the manufacturer places a plurality of the tubular bodies on a winding mandrel in end-to-end relation and winds the tape directly on such tubular bodies or hubs from a large roll containing a sheet or web which is cut into strips of the required width during the winding operation. To avoid spacing the individual strips from each other as they are being wound, the tubular hubs are made of a length exactly corresponding to the width of the strips to be wound thereon, so that when the individual rolls are removed from the mandrel the end faces thereof are flush with the ends of the hubs. Subsequently, the heads are applied to the ends of. the hubs to complete the spools.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a spool or reel especially adapted for the method of operation above set forth and embodying a novel and improved mode of fastening the heads permanently and rigidly upon the ends of the spool hub with the inner faces of the heads in abutting relation with the end edges of the hub and with the fastening means disposed wholly within the ends of. the hub.
A further object is to provide a spool or reel of the character indicated, in which the tubular body or hub as well as the heads are made of sheet metal, and the heads permanently and rigidly secured within the ends of the hub by means of a very simple character permitting easy application of the heads after the adhesive plaster has been wound thereon.
To the above ends the invention consists in the novel spool or reel hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing showing a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a casing showing the spool or reel detachably held in position therein.

Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing it indicates a strip of sheet metal the ends of. which are secured together as at H to form a ring or drum the peripheral edges of which are rolled into beads I? for the purposes of strength, ornamentation and to obviate sharp edges. The ring or drum is constructed to receive the reel of the invention and it is provided with a plurality of inwardly pressed lugs l3 adjacent each rolled edge thereof.
The tubular body constituting the hub of the metal reel is indicated at M. It is provided with straight free ends l5 and with inwardly pressed beads l6 extending therearound adjacent each free end l5. The heads of the reel are indicated at ll, the peripheral edges being beaded as at it for the purposes of strength, ornamentation and to obviate sharp edges. The heads are provided with annular depressed portions as extending into a further shouldered depressed portion 20 and terminating in a flange 2i. To secure the heads to the hub the parts are placed in the rela tion shown in Fig. 6 with the depressed portions 20 seated against the free straight ends l5 and the beads 16 of the hub, the flanges 2i then being securely and rigidly expanded around and locked to the beads It as shown in Fig. 5. This construction produces an exceedingly strong and rigid reel. As is obvious, the beads l6 perform the double function of being strengthening and stiffening members for the hub and of also being anchoring and locking means for the heads ll. Also the engagement of the free ends E5 of the hub with the shouldered depressed portions acts to prevent rocking of the heads on the hub. It may be here remarked that the depressed portions 19 have been provided to prevent the heads H from interfering with the pro-per winding of the tape on the hub or the unwinding therefrom.
The ring or drum hereinbefore described provides a suitable dust-proof holder for the reel which may be axially inserted in the ring or drum from either side thereof by sufiicient pressure applied against a head of the reel which will act to overcome the resistance offered by the inwardly pressed lugs l3 because of the inherent resiliency of the metal of the ring. When fully inserted in the ring the heads I! bridge the lugs l3 as clearly shown in Fig. 2, said lugs then acting as retaining members to prevent accidental displacement of the reel from within the ring. The reel, however, may be removed with ease and facility by pressure applied against either of its heads to again overcome the resistance of the lugs [3. When the reel is in the position shown in Fig. 2 its heads cooperate with the ring to form a closed container thus preventing dust from contacting with the adhesive tape or other material which is wound on the reel hub and of preventing injury thereto. Both the ring and reel may be easily and cheaply manufactured.
The invention claimed is:
1. A reel comprising a hollow hub and heads, said hub being provided with inwardly pressed beads adjacent its free ends and acting as strengthening and locking members, said heads having shouldered depressed portions with an opening extending therethrough, said depressed portions entering said hub and seating against said beads and terminating in flanges expanded over and around and locked to said beads with the free ends of said hub engaging against the shoulders of said depressed portions to prevent rocking of said heads on said hub.
2. An adhesive plaster spool, comprising a tubular body formed from sheet metal and adapted to carry a roll of adhesive tape of a width equal to the length of said body, said body having formed therein a short distance from one end thereof an inwardly projecting anchoring rib, and a head abutting the extreme end edge of the body and having a fastening member projecting axially therefrom and bent around said rib to fasten the head permanently in position on the body.
3. An adhesive plaster spool, comprising a tubular body formed from sheet metal and adapted to carry thereon a roll of adhesive tape of a width equal to the length of said body, said body having spaced a short distance inwardly from one end thereof an anchoring rib, and a head abutting the extreme end edge of the body and having a fastening member projecting axially therefrom and having its free end bent into interengaging relation with said rib to fasten the head firmly in position on the body, said anchoring rib being in the form of an inwardly project ing bead, and said fastening member being in the form of an open-ended annulus formed integral with the head.

An adhesive plaster spool, comprising a tubular body formed from sheet metal and adapted to carry thereon a roll of adhesive tape of a Width equal to the length of said body, said body having formed at one end thereof an inwardly projecting annular bead spaced a short distance from said end, and a head abutting the extreme end edge of the body adjacent said bead and having an annulus projecting axially into the body and providing an outwardly facing substantially V-shaped groove engaging with the side of the bead opposite said end of the body and acting to hold the head firmly against said end of the body.
5. An adhesive plaster spool, comprising a tubular body formed from fiat sheet metal with its opposite edges secured together from end to end of the body so as to form a straight cylindrical core for a roll of adhesive plaster tape of a width corresponding to the length of the core, said body having an inwardly projecting circumferential rib at one end providing a shoulder spaced from the end of the body, and a head having a part arranged to abut squarely with the side of said bead opposite said shoulder in spaced relation thereto, said head further having an axially projecting annulus disposed inwardly of said rib when the head is positioned centrally of the body and being of the length adapted when bent outwardly into engagement with said shoulder to secure the head positively in position on the body.
