The-,invention Vhas fortan object the construction of Aa book cover which is characterized by sheet material of rectangular shape having longitudinal edge portions bent inwards and of a width-between the bends substantially equal to the .width of a book to -be covered, and of a length adapted-to have end-portions thereof-bent -inwards-and engaged-over end portions of the covers of the 4book with the end portions ofthe covers disposed between the bends ofthe longitudinal edge portions. Still further, .the invention contemplates the provision of resilient means arranged transversely between the ends of. the longitudinal edge portions for holding thebook cover'upon the covers of fthe book.

The resilient means between the ends of the longitudinal bent portions lact so as to slightly-reducethe .size of the ends of thel book cover so that it maintains its po-sition upon the covers of thezbook. The invention also proposes-the provisi-on` Yofan ar-rangement wherein normally the operative effect-ofthe resilient means may be negatived until such time that the book cover is eng-aged -upon a book. Thus, the interference of the resilient means when engaging the book cover on thebook will be eliminated.

Still further, the invention Valso contemplates the provision of longitudinal cuts along the edges ofthe end portions of the material forming the book-cover and arranged in such a manner so as to be adapted to overlap, and said overlapping portions being equipped with fastening means for holding the overlapped portions in operative positions to cause the operating of the resilient means as previously explained, and so arranged that when the overlapping portions are disconnected, the resilient means will be inoperative.

As another object, the invention proposes the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The book cover, according to this invention, comprises sheet material I (of cloth or sheet rubber) of .rectangular shape having longitudinal edge portions bent inwards. Therwidth of the book cover betw-een the bend is substantially equal to the width of a book I2 to be covered. The sheet material is of such length that end portions I3 may be bent inwards and engage over the ends ofthe covers l2 of the booky with the ends .of the covers I2 engaged between the said longitudinal bends. Resilient means I4 is transversely arranged between the ends of the edge portions for properly holding the cover upon the cover of the book.

The dot and dash lines AB in Fig. 2 divide off the end portions I3 of the book cover which are bent to engage over the ends of the covers I2 of the book. The ends of the covers I2 are engaged The right hand end of the book cover is shown properly engaged upon one of the cover sections of the book. 'Ihe left hand end of the book cover must be bent and the book cover engaged in between the edge portions. The dot and dash lines CD in Fig. 2 illustrate wherein the material of the book cover is bent to form the portion which extends over the book, or binding of the book.

In Figs. and 6 a modification of the invention is disclosed wherein provision is made for releasably engaging the resilient means I8 between the inturned edges of the book cover so that the cover of a book may be easily engaged between the inturned edges. There is also a provision to urge the edges together to hold the book cover in place on the cover of a book when the resilient means I8 is in operative position. The resilient means I8 is of a convenient length to allow the resilient means to be engaged between the internal edges of the covel` and to allow the cover to lie flat when in the open position. It will be noted, by considering Fig. l, that because the resilient means I4 contracts the ends of the book cover, it requires some tension to properly engage the cover upon the book. The means for renderingthe resilientmeans inoperative comprises longitudinal cuts I6 formed in the end portions of the book cover and arranged in such a manner that the adjacent portions I6a and IBb thereof are adapted to overlap. VA means is provided for holding the overlapped portions deltachably together and comprises asnap fastener element I'I on one part engagable with a complementary snap fastener element Ha on the otherV part. In Fig. 5 the cut I I is shown open, wherein the resilientmeans I8 is inoperative and the cover may be easily engaged upon Vthe covers of a book. In Fig. 6 the book I2 is shown with the cover engaged thereon and with the portions Ia and |617 overlapping and held together with the fastening means. In this latter condition, the resilientmeans is operatingand serves to properly and tightly hold the book coverupon the book. Overlapping of the portions I 6d and I6b producesa conical shaped pucker which is pressed flat when the book is closed. v

It is to be understood that any other form of fastening means may be used instead of those illustrated in Figs. 4 and 7*, also that both ends of the elastic straps Illa. may be detachably mounted on bent edges II. v

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed'and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the'scope of the invention as dei-ined in the appended claims. Having thus describedgmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-

1. A book cover, comprising sheet material of rectangular shape having longitudinal edge portions bent inwards and of a width between the bends which constitutes the body portion of said sheet material and which is substantially equal to the width of a book to be covered. and of a length adapted to have end portions bent inwards and engageable over the ends of the covers of a book with the ends of the covers disposed between the edge portions and said main body portion of said sheet material, transverse resilient meansY between the ends of the edge portions, and the ends of said sheet material being formed with longitudinal cuts with the edges of thematerial adjacent the cuts adapted to overlap, and releasable fastening means upon said overlapping edges. A book cover, comprising sheet material of rectangular shape having longitudinal edge portions bent inwards and of a width between the bends which constitutes the body portion of said sheet material and which is substantially equal to the Width of a book to be covered, and of a length adapted to have end portions bentY inwards and engageable over the ends of the covers of a book with the ends of the covers disposed between the edge Vportions and said main body portion of saidsheet material, transverse resilient means between the ends of the edge portions, and the ends of said sheet material being formed with longitudinal cuts with the edges of the material adjacent the cuts adapted to overlap, and releasably :fastening means "upon said overlapping edges, comprising snap fastener elements.

3. A book cover, comprising sheet material of rectangular shape having longitudinal edge portions bent inwards and of a width between Vthe bends which constitutes the body portion of said sheet material and which is substantially equal to the width of a book to be covered,Y and of a length adapted to have end portions bent inwards and engageable over the ends of the covers of a9book with the ends of the covers disposed between the edge portions, transverse resilient means between thev ends of the edge portions and said main body portion of said sheet material, and the ends of said sheet material being formed with longitudinal cuts with the edges of the material adjacent'the cuts adapted to overlap, and releasable fastening means uponv said overlapping edges, Vcomprising snap fastener elements, having co-'actable sections mounted upon the overlapping portions and releasably engageable with each other to allow the cover to beeasily applied and removed from a book.v Y
