Description
Aug. 4, 1936. A. M. HERSCHENSOHN 2,049,773
HAIR WAVING DEVICE Filed July 16, 1955 I INVENTOR: 19/777106 M. lif/rsa/i/vso/l/v ATTORNEY.
Patented" Aug. 1, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR WAVING DEVICE V Arthur M. Hersche'nsohn, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application July 16, 1935, Serial No. 31,553 4 Claims. (Cl. 132-31) My invention relates to improvements in hair waving devices and it consists in the novel features, which are hereinafter more fully described.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide the jaws ofa spring pressed hair waving device with teeth which are disposed to have a biting action when closing on a layer or lock of hair, thereby holding the enclosed layer of hair more firmly. Another object of my invention is to have said teeth acting on more than one layer of hair at a time, thereby insuring a firmer grip on the hair.
A further object of my invention is to have the hair wa'ving device adapted for use on different volumes of hair.
A still other object is to have my improved hair waving device simple, durable and relatively inexpensive. i
I attain these objects by the hair waving de- 0 vice, three forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one form of my hair waving device which is 25 shown with the teeth thereof extending upwardly and the thumb-plates thereof extending downwardly; Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows but show- 30 ing only one pair of teeth of the device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of another form of my hair waving device, positioned as in Fig. 1;
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views:
In the form of my hair waving device, whichis shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 11 and 12 designate two jaws, which are hingedly connected to each other by means of a pin I3 and two pair of sockets l4 and I5, one pair on each of the jaws II and H2.
The pin 13 is shown as encompassed by a 5 torsional spring i6 which is initially stressed and has its ends disposed to press against the inner sides of a pair of thumb-plates l1 and I8, which are provided on the concave or outer edges of 'the jaws II and I2 and are integral with the latter;
, 50 the pressure of the ends of said spring l6 tends to turn said plates l1 and I8 and said jaws I I and I2 on said pin l5 as a pivot in a direction to close the jaws II and i2.
, To open the said jaws II and i2 the thumb- 55 plates I1 and I8 are pressed towards each-other by the hand of the operator in opposition to the resistance or torsion of said spring I6.
The jaws H and I2 are provided with sets of teeth i9 and respectively, which are positioned opposite each other adjacent to the con- 5 cave edges of said jaws and are integral with the latter; the teeth I!) and 20 are of substantially the same length and may be formed by punching or striking from the metal of said jaws, leaving J9 and .20, which are preferably curved as shown,
the closing motion or rotation of the jaws and I2 towards each other is limited by means of one or more stops 2| which are shown as provided on the jaw I I to abut against the jaw IL in the closed position of the device.
The stops 2| are shown as punched from the metal of the jaw ll leaving therein openings2ia. and located near the convex edge of the jaw H.
In the modification of my hair waving device, which is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the sets of teeth i on the jaws 3| 'and '32 have each thereon alternately long teeth 29 and short teeth 30; the teeth 29 on one set are positioned opposite the teeth 30 on the other set and vice versa. By this arrangement the teeth and 30 act on more than one layer of hair at a time, thereby insuring a firmer grip on the hair. I
The-jaws 3| and 32 also have their opposite teeth disposed to overlap each other at their 40 outer ends; the ends of the teeth 30 in each set are shown as disposed to overlap the ends of the teeth 29 of the opposite set.
Stops 2| are shown as provided on the jaw 3| to abut against the jaw 32 when the jaws areclosed for limiting the rotation of the plates 3| and 32 on the pin l3 as a pivot under the influence of the spring l6, thereby also limiting the extent of the overlap of said teeth 29 and 30 at the outer ends thereof.
The teeth 29 and 30 are punched from the jaws 3| and 32 leaving in the latter the openings 29a and 30a. as shown in Fig. 4.
The stops 2| are also punched from the plate 3i leaving therein corresponding openings Ma. 55
standard parts, such as thumb-plates 'n and I8, springs l6 and pivot pins l3 of hair waving devices are designated by the same numerals in the views of all the three modifications of my improved hair waving device.
The stops 2| and openings 2 la which are hereinbeiore described are also designated by the same numerals in the views of the three modifications of my hair waving device.
Variations are possible, and parts of my invention may be used without other parts.
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a hair waving devicea pair of jaws pivotally connected to each other, teeth extending from each of said jaws towards the other jaw, said teeth to grip a layer of hairtherebetween,
a means for keeping said jaws in closedposition and a means for opening said jaws, the teeth 1, combined with t a means for limiting the rotation oisaid jaws on their pivot when the device is being closed- ,and thereby limiting the overlapping of said ends to a desired extent.
3. The elements of claim 1, the teeth on each jaw being alternately 1onger-and shorter, the
longer teeth on each jaw being positioned opposite the shorter teeth'on the other jaw, and vice versa said teeth thereby acting on more than one layer or hair at a time and thereby insuring a 10 firmer grip on the hair.
4. In a hair waving device apair oi jaws, pivotally connected to each other, teeth extending from each or said jaws towards the other jaw,
said teeth to a grip of layer of hair there be- 15 tween, a means for keeping said jaws in closed position and a means for opening said jaws, the
teeth on the opposite jaws being disposed to overlap each other at their outer ends when the jaws are in closed position, thereby producing a 20 biting action and insuring a firmer grip on the said hair, combined with one or more stops on one of said jaws to abut against the other jaw, whereby to limit the rotation of said jaws on their pivot, when the device is being closed and thereby limiting the overlapping of the said ends to a desired extent.
