Description
July 7, 1936. R LU DAY 2,046,641
SHARPENER Original Filed Dec. 13, 1954 Inventor By Mm Attorney Patented July 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application December 13, 1934, Serial No. 757,392 Renewed January 16, 1936 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a sharpener for knives and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide a handle member with means whereby the strip of abrasive material can be 5 readily attached thereto and detached therefrom with the spring member for holding the abrasive strip in position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination l and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference 15 will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
20 Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view of the angle spring clip.
In these views, the numeral I indicates an elongated member of rectangular shape in cross section and having a handle-forming part 2 25 formed at one end thereof. The member I is formed on opposite sides thereof with inwardly and forwardly extending slots 3, one slot being in advance of the other and the end opposite the handle part is also formed with a diagonal slot 4.
30 The numeral 5 indicates a strip of abrasive material which has its ends bent and placed in the slots 3, the looped end of the strip projecting beyond the end of the member I and an angle plate or clip 6 'of spring metal has one limb 5 placed in the slot 4 with its other limb pressing against the loop part of the strip 5, as shown in Fig. 2 so that the strip is firmly held in place and when it is desired to remove the strip and replace it by a new one, it is simply necessary to press upon the loop end and press the spring member inwardly which will slack the strip and thus permit its ends to be removed from the slots 3. Then a new strip can readily be placed in position.
As will be seen that limb of the plate which enters the slot is corrugated while the extremity 10 of the opposite limb is bent so that the corrugated part firmly holds the plate in the slot and the bent extremity of the other limb prevents the plate from cutting or wearing the abrasive strip.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A sharpener of the class described comprising an elongated member having a handle part at one end, the rest of the member being of substantially rectangular shape in cross section and having a pair of diagonally arranged slots in opposite sides thereof and a diagonal slot in its free end, a strip of abrasive material having its ends located in the pair of slots, and a spring member of angle shape having one limb seated in the end slot and the other limb bearing against the looped part of the strip.
