Description

Dec. 5, 1933. w. J. GROUND 1,938,524
HOLDER FOR CIGARS OR CIGARETTES Original Filed Dec. 30, 1930 [12 ventol';
Patented Dec. 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application December 30, 1930, Serial No. 505,613, and in Canada January 10, 1930. Renewed April 29, 1933 1 Claim.
The invention relates to improvements in holders for cigars or cigarettes as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawing that form a part of the 5 same.
I One object of the invention is to provide a simple holder capable of accommodating either a cigar or a cigarette and having means for firmly gripping the end of same to prevent dislodgement.
A further object is to provide a holder having means whereby the stub may be exposed to facilitate the removal of same.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangements and combinations described in the present specification and more particularly pointed out in the claim for novelty following.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view of my improved holder, a portion only of the stem being shown and same being in longitudinal section.
Figure 2 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure l, a portion thereof being in section.
Figure 3 is an end view with the jaw in its open position.
Figure 4 is a view of the side opposite to that shown in Figure 1, the stem being omitted.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Figure 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.
Referring to the drawing the bowl 1 adapted to receive the end of a cigar, or cigarette, comprises a tubular member having a reduced inner end 2 adapted to be inserted in the end of a stem 3 and cemented, or otherwise secured thereto. The interior 4 of the bowl is preferably conical in form to conform to the shape of a cigar and communicates with the bore 5 which extends through the reduced end 2 and the stem 3.
A portion of the wall of the bowl from the outer end thereof is covered from the remaining portion and such section is hinged along one edge, as at 6, and provides a laterally swinging jaw, '7, adapted to be opened to permit of the insertion of the cigar, or cigarette, and when closed thereover serves to hold such cigar, or 5 cigarette, in position, said jaw being provided with interiorly disposed pins 8 adapted on the closing of the jaw to pierce the cigar.
The free edge of the jaw '7, opposite to the hinge 6, is provided with a clamp 9 pivoted thereto and having an outwardly projecting curled spring finger 10 adapted in the closed position of the jaw to enter a recess 11in the adjacent wall so as to lock said jaw over the cigar, or cigarette.
In the, use of this invention the clamp 9 is released and the jaw 7 opened and the end of the cigar, or cigarette, inserted in the bowl, after which the jaw is closed and clamped down, the pins 8 piercing the cigar, or cigarette, and holding same against dislodgment. When it is desired to remove the stub it is simply necessary to open the jaw and shake the holder to release the stub from the pins 8.
What I claim is:
In a holder for cigars, or cigarettes, in combination with a bowl having a pivoted jaw interposed in the wall thereof, a spring locking element pivoted to said jaw and extending outwardly therefrom and terminating in a curved finger adapted to be forced into a recess in the wall of said bowl.
