UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN MEMORANDUM-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,146, dated July 17, 1877; application filed May 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. 000m, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Memorandum-Book, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved books. Fig. 2 represents the same opened at the center. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the loop-plates. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the fastening-wire.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved memorandum-books, which shall'be so constructed that the inside book or the stubs 20f said inside book may be removed and replaced with a new book, which may be made of any desired size and thickness, and will open fiat and close flat.
The invention consists in the metal plate, provided with the loops and the fasteningwire, in combination with the cover and the inside book, and in the inside book, formed of an odd number of sections, to furnish a positive center to receive the fastening, as hereinafter fully described.
In the drawing, A B represent the side plates, and G theback of the cover. D is the inside book, which is made of three, five, seven, or any other desired uneven number of sections, and each section may have any desired number of leaves, so as to make a book of any desired thickness.
The sections are sewed together, and may be still-further secured by a paper pasted upon their rear edges. The object of always having a section in the center is to have a firm hold for the fastening that connects the A on the inner side of the back 0 of the cover A B G, and is covered by a strip of cloth placed over it, and pasted to the said back, holes being formed through the said strip of cloth for the passage of the 'loops 0'. The loops e are then passed through holes in the fold of the central section of the inside book D, and a wire, F, is. passed through them along the inner side of said fold, fastening the inside book D securely and detachably to the cover A B 0. With this construction the book will open flat and close flat, and when used up can be readily detached from the cover A B O and replaced with a new one.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The metal plate E, provided with the loops 6, and the fastening-wire F, in combination with the cover A B (J and the inside book 1), substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The inside book, formed of an odd number of connected sections, in combination with the looped plate E, fastening-wire F, and cover A B G, as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM ALLEN COOKE.
